Function of Beauty - Kianna’s Results
Function of Beauty is an online company that lets you create personalized shampoo and conditioner based on your hair type and a combination of five “hair goals” that you want to see through usage. This site boasts about being cruelty, sulfate, toxin, and paraben free. With a very user friendly site I was able to get my first order done quickly. Pro tip: if the shampoo is sulfate free and you have curly hair, it would be best to shampoo two to three times to make sure your scalp is really clean.
A little background about myself/my hair. I am mixed, African American and White. I have extremely thick/curly hair that doesn’t seem to fall into either “racial category.” Personally, I can’t wash my hair every day because of two reasons. One, my hair needs more oil in it to not dry out. I literally have to put oil (I use biosilk, switching to coconut oil soon though) in my hair after a wash and condition; and two, with curly hair it can be really damaging to wash every day. Condition on the daily though. All that being said, I put my hair as “coily, medium, and normal” in the hair types categories when I was making my shampoo/conditioner. My goals after some consideration ended up being “anti-frizz, lengthen, oil control, curl definition, and soothe scalp.” I have a very dry scalp so I am a head and shoulders girl. I also want my curls to be more tamed/less frizzy, but at the same time I want my hair to get longer. I have had short hair for the longest time now. Finally, I chose the scent sandalwood violet. Just a little heads up: I personally liked the scent, but Cody got the same and thought it smelled like “old ladies.” Pick wisely, just a little heads up. I mentioned that I condition my hair every day while in the shower, but for the sake of this trial period I am only going to condition when washing.
My shampoo arrived 18 days after order, packaging oh so pretty. (Mind you, it was forty-six dollars for a 16 oz shampoo and conditioner; no shipping). I tend to shower at random times so I don’t really keep a schedule. Although I do want to start doing a deep treatment day with my hair like on my day off or something, but back to the shower. First lather up is eh. I’m pretty used to this though, my hair does this with pretty much any shampoo so I don’t think anything of it and go to two. Also just a side note, I chose the strongest level of scent so my shower smelled fantastic, on the other hand this can be overpowering to other people. Lather #2 is amazing. Smells greats, feels great, and best of all is I noticed I was using much less product than I usually would. I shampoo once more and move on to conditioner. I typically use more conditioner than shampoo and let it sit in my hair while I finish washing up, singing, etc. Everything rinsed out very smoothly and I finished with my normal routine: towel dry, oil tips to roots, and up in a bun until I have to go out. Pro tip: rinse out your conditioner with cold water (I know it’s not going to feel good) but it really helps to lock in that moisture.
RESULTS:
Day 1: Immediate results. My curls look fuller, healthier, bouncier, and aren’t just a tangled mess. They actually have some shape once they poof out a bit from drying. Also, my hair smells fantastic.
Day 2: Easy detangling with some water and a wide tooth comb. Still can smell the shampoo/conditioner. My curls are looking softer and softer and still aren’t frizzing.
Day 3: Wash and condition. Again towel dry, oil, and up in a bun until I have to go out. I tend to shower either early morning or after I get off work in the evening, but it is not scheduled. Hair is less frizzy and doesn’t “poof out” as much as it normally would.
Day 4/5: Curls are shaping nicely to my face without expanding as much as normal, soft to the touch, still smelling fantastic. I don’t usually see a lot of growth in my hair over any period of time so I didn’t expect anything (especially not in the first week). I will definitely buy again. My hair doesn’t feel oily and I have noticed my scalp is much less dry/itchy.
Day 6/7: Shampoo and Condition. This stuff is amazing, keeps getting better and better. Review time.
CONS:
Now I will say there are some cons for this product. First, shipping takes forever. I wouldn’t put this as a total con since the company is literally making your shampoo to order, but still. Second, there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to scent, there are three options and of course it’s online so you just kinda have to guess and go with it. Other than that, I don’t have much more against the company.
PROS:
If you pick your hair goals, it is going to work. I am so impressed with this shampoo/conditioner, especially the way it has treated my scalp and curls. I will definitely be buying again.
