ACNH: Sugar Sugar Rune`
This week’s ACNH theme is all about the unusual underdog series that is the witches from Sugar Sugar Rune! This time, we get to see how different artists can each create unique versions inspired by the same outfits from the series.
Full credit goes to the creators,  whom we have tagged where possible. We encourage you to include their info in any screenshots you post that include their creations.

So I received my final big package of proxy stuff I’d bought before I changed jobs and it’s full of great stuff (and weird stuff – now I know why there’s no internal pics of Asamiya’s Lebia doujin around, her nips are out the whole time lol). However, there’s one thing I am just absolutely over the moon about.
Like… just… I was stunned.
I managed to win an auction a few months back of the first Shougaku Ninensei issue featuring Fujii Midori’s Wedding Peach manga (one of the manga serials that was never published in collected volumes). That in itself is pretty exciting, the only other chapters I own are towards the end of the series’ run and I’ve never had the opportunity to see how it all started. BUT IT GOT BETTER.
*deep breath*
The first chapter of Fujii Midori’s Wedding Peach manga is IN FULL COLOUR.
A FULL COLOUR WEDDING PEACH MANGA CHAPTER.
Tumblr media
Now admittedly this chapter is like all of Fujii Midori’s Wedding Peach manga chapters and only 8 pages in length. But it also has a bonus page in colour so that’s 9 full colour pages in one issue. OF FUJII’S GORGEOUS, FUNNY, AND WHIMSICAL SHOUJO ART. ;o; I’ve been following Wedding Peach for 25+ years and it amazes me that I can still be floored by finds from this series after decades of digging into it.
Tumblr media
Story-wise we have Momoko, Yuri and Hinagiku seeing a wedding in passing which causes Momoko to think back to her mother and the ring she left her. Enter Pluie who is after the Saint Something Four. He attacks the girls, they smack him back a bit, Limone appears with a compact (Saint Miroir) through which Aphrodite appears. Momoko shouts “Wedding Beautiful Flower!” and ALL THREE transform into angels before powering up (per above) into their fighter forms as Angel Peach, Angel Lily, and Angel Daisy.
Pluie is dispatched with Peach’s “Saint Miroir Bridal Flash” attack and the girls return to their civillian forms, each wanting to know more about their new circumstances and the angel Limone. End chapter.
So a super condensed intro chapter that has all the girls awaken and transform at once (which makes sense given the number of pages Fujii was working with here). It’s fascinating seeing what things were kept and what was ditched for length here.
Unfortunately my scanner problems are not over so it might be a while before I can share this chapter (which BTW has the kana title of Super Angel Story Wedding Peach or Chou Tenshi Densetsu Wedding Peach, potentially a variation on the initial Ai no Chou Tenshi Densetsu subtitle Yazawa’s Ciao manga had). I just wanted to let you all know that this has consumed my mind today despite all the other crap going on in my life and the world.
Oh and I got some other sweet stuff too, stay tuned for more.

Why Not Buy Bootlegs?
Today, we’re telling you exactly why people could - and should not - buy bootleg items.
We’re primarily looking at magical girl wands from series like Pretty Cure and Sailor Moon, but the below also applies to a variety of figures and props from across all kinds of fandoms and collectibles.
#1: The Cost
One of the biggest arguments people put forward about buying bootlegs is the price - but that isn’t as strong an argument as people seem to think.
Pretty Cure’s Flower Echo Wand retailed for just 1,300 JPY - that’s roughly 13 USD. Meanwhile, the most common bootleg of this wand retails for also 20 USD, and is primarily sold on Chinese exclusive websites. Yes, you read those prices correctly, it was originally more expensive to get the fake!
Now, this has been out of production for years, which does push up the market value a bit. But it is still significantly easier and cheaper to purchase secondhand versions of the real thing, going for as little as 15 USD new in box on secondhand sites like Mandarake, which ships globally, or Mecari JP.
Tumblr media
And this isn’t exclusive to less well known franchises.
Bootleg versions of Sailor Moon Live’s clear Moon Rod go up to 30 USD. On the other hand, the real thing goes for as little as, you guessed it, 30 USD when in used but working condition, with new in box ones going for 50 USD. You can’t even buy two bootlegs for that!
Tumblr media
That doesn’t mean all of the “real” items are always cheaper or easily obtained - perhaps ironically, series like China’s Balala are difficult to obtain official merchandising for when outside of China, but bootlegs of it are remarkably rampant.
Plus, any high-quality replicas such as Proplica items will typically cost anywhere from 10 to 100 times as much as their fake counterparts, and have the higher quality structure, screen accuracy, and gimmicks, that the fakes will lack.
#2: Accessibility
We’ve already covered above that these can easily be bough used on Mandarake - check out THIS POST listing tons of globally shipping anime merch stores  - so this argument already feels flat for us.
But, there is some merit to it. Simple chibi style bootlegs can often be bought in local dollars stores for very little, while larger versions are easily found on underregulated conglomerate giants like Amazon and Aliexpress. On the other hand, the real thing takes a lot more patience for preorders and secondhand shop scouring, knowledge of stores - which again can be found in the link above - or even the use of proxies to purchase off sites like Taobao and Mecari. And, as mentioned above, some official items may be exclusive to their respective countries, which can require extra skills and resources.
While none of these things are truly difficult to learn, they can seem daunting and confusing to new collectors, and will put off people who prefer instant gratification.
#3: Cosplay & Kids
This, to us, is the most sensible and excusable reason to buy bootlegs. When it can be difficult, expensive, and time consuming to get your hands on the real thing, especially those that are vintage or limited edition, the last thing you want is for a child or cosplay pose to destroy it!
The same thing goes for wanting to paint it to make an OC weapon, especially given many bootlegs are already incorrect colour schemes that may work perfectly for your design without the need to deface and devalue the real item.
Sometimes, the real thing just isn’t realistic, at the end of the day.
#4: Sometimes They’re Just Cool(er)
We’d love to own that ridiculous spider-man crossover wand, and this blog’s owner couldn’t resist this telescoping Cardcaptor Clow wand made of metal. So many bootlegs, especially the crossovers, feature strange and cool new combinations of characters, art styles, colours, and even product materials.
Tumblr media
The vast majority of official items also have very standardized gimmicks, especially when buying from within a franchise. This can feel boring very quickly! Many bootlegs have additional or unique tricks, such as all these different bubble blowers, or the ones that work as remotes to control a spinning doll, that make them feel more interactive and fresh.
That doesn’t mean the real thing can’t be fun or innovative, but they are often limited to what is depicted on screen on order to make sales.
#5 - Market Value
You may be surprised to learn that bootlegs, in and of themselves, have a surprisingly active market and fanbase that’s separate from the real wands.
As we mention on the post about this Korean Sailor Moon bootleg, all the good factors above, along with the virality, age and location of the item - which adds to scarcity - can lead to a bootleg being just as, or even more valuable that, the real thing. Banned items like the Evil Stick, which find notoriety outside of magical girl spheres, can often be worth far more than their original dollar store tag.
However, all value is relative, and as trends come and go, the price of bootlegs tend to fluctuate far more than the real thing.
Would you buy a bootleg item? Let us know below, and share this with your friends for their thoughts!

Canine Themed Magical Girls & Boys
Inspired by the release of Tokyo Mew Mew New’s anime, we’re bringing you a series all about magical girls - and a magical boy - with canine traits!
This week’s list is inspired by Mew Zakuro, the idol magical girl whose DNA is merged with the Gray Wolf.
You can find other posts from our Animal Themed Magical Girls HERE!
PLEASE BE ADVISED, THE FOLLOWING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.
Tumblr media
Sapphie - Jewelpet
There are several dogs in Jewelpet, but Sapphie stands out as the most regulars and powerful. Being a Jewelpet, Sapphie assists human partners to transform into magical girls. Sapphie’s magic focuses on friendship, as she is able to open others to relationships, and is known for her cool and intelligent nature. This often results in her magical girls being negotiator and protection types, as opposed to action-focused. Many of her partners, like Zakura, start out as loner-types.
Tumblr media
Hughie - Waccha Primagi
A wolf-type mascot and musical magician, Hughie often acts as a magical mentor to the cast’s core team. He uses his singing skills to partner with human Toma, though unlike most in the series, they perform and generate magic as a human duo, rather than a mascot transforming a human.
While his human form doesn’t resemble a wolf, he often poses like one and displays dog-like behavior and superhuman strength in addition to his magic skills.
Tumblr media
Pafu - Go Princess Precure
Fairy dog Pafu -though technically not a Pretty Cure - nonetheless is able to transform into a magical maid, which presents either as a doggy outfit or in the form of a small human.
In both maid forms, she is shown to be capable of either flying or physics-defying high jumping, and is highly intelligent, while her dog origins always give her a strong sense of smell and high endurance. Her normal clumsiness is also diminished as a maid.
Tumblr media
Cure Chocolate - Kira Kira Precure A La Mode
Justice-filled and chocolate-themed, Kira Kira Precure A La Mode’s dog magical girl is known for their passionate protection of their friends. Her mature attitude may lead to being mistaken for a loner, but she’s never far from her friends and enjoys participation in the younger Precure’s events.
Chocolate is often mistaken for a boy, which she strongly dislikes, but we love her unique short hair and pants!
Tumblr media
Cure Pekorin - Kira Kira Precure A La Mode
Like Pafu, Pekorin is initially a mascot - though more humanoid, she’s described as Puppy or Dog-plush like. They also share a superior sense of smell - though this appears inferior Chocolat’s - jumping abilities. Unlike Pafu, though, Pekorin is officially a magical girl member of the team - yet remains clumsy and easily distracted in either form.
Pekorin also possesses her very own magical girl wand! Although her physical dog features largely disappear, her magical girl form does have cute donut dog ears and a large bow “tail”.
Tumblr media
It’s fascinating to us that most of the dog themed magical characters are largely mascots, at least at first! Do you have a favourite dog themed magical girl?

Bunny Magic - Rabbit Themed Magical Girls
Inspired by the release of Tokyo Mew Mew New’s anime, we’re bringing you a series all about magical girls with anime traits!
This week’s list is inspired by Mew Berry, an additional character who has so far only been featured in the sequel Manga series! We hope she’ll get her anime debut one day.
You can find other posts from our Animal Themed Magical Girls HERE!
Tumblr media
While this is not intended to be a comprehensive list, it may include mild spoilers.
ChuChu - Show By Rock
Show by Rock, a blend of magical girls and idols, has quite a few animal eared members and rabbit themed singer-guitarist ChuChu is no exception. Unusually, for a protagonist, she’s usually seen wearing dark gothic lolita or sexy type clothing, making her one of the aesthetically darkest animal characters.
Tumblr media
Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R
While we normally refrain from featuring parody series, Komugi’s bunny ears and mascot were too cute to leave off on this occaision.
Tumblr media
Cure Whip
With big leaps and superhuman hearing, Cure Whip’s bunny features are more than just decoration!
Tumblr media
Balala The Fairies: Magic Star Fate Castle
As before, little has been translated about the latest Balala series to date - but we couldn’t help but included this absolutely adorable rabbit eared girl and her partner!
Tumblr media
Honorary Mentions: Princess Heart, Cure Grace, Milky Rose, Ruby
Princess Heart from Catch Teenieping, & Cure Grace from Healin’ Good Precure both have animal mascots that help them transform, while Ruby is a rabbit fairy mascot with various partners throughout the Jewelpet franchise. Milky Rose also has a rabbit form, which has no impact at all on her magical girl or human personas.
While none of the magical girls in the section show rabbit features in their transformation outfits, they do impact their relationships, wands, and transformation sequence.

Magical Meows - Magical Girls With Cat Motifs
With the release of the new Tokyo Mew Mew New series, we wanted to take a look back at some of the other animal themed magical girls over the years!
We’re starting with Mew Ichigo’s theme animal - the cat!
Tumblr media
Please note that the following may contain mild spoilers.
Sailor Luna - Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Live Action Series)
We’ve previously discussed the history of Live Action Moon remakes - and why PGSM is totally worth watching - and one good reason is that this underrated gem features one of the earliest examples of an official Sailor Luna on screen. She’s young, fun, and full of opinions, just as you’d expect of everyone’s favorite cat mascot!
Tumblr media
Myamu - Waccha PriMagi
While it’s arguable that PriMagi is an idol, not a magical girl, Myamu is still a magical girl character. As a witch, her magic is powered by the music made by her human partner which is why we’re counting her on this occasion. Like Luna, Myamu is normally a cat-shaped magical fairy, but in her human form she tends to loose most of her cat-like features. Her attitude, fangs, and body language are very cat-like though and she sometimes wears cat-themed clothing.
Tumblr media
Cyan - Show By Rock
Like Myamu, Cyan is part magical girl, part idol, as well as a cat mascot.  Unlike Myamu, her cat form has a much more obvious impact on her human outfit, with full ears and a tail.
Tumblr media
You - Calico Game
Our first - and only - Western entry, Calico is a game where you, the newest member in a town of magcial girls, look after a cat cafe.
Tumblr media
Cure Beat - Suite Precure
Pretty Cure’s first cat girl is a former cat-shaped fairy mascot that overcomes her history to become part of the team, turning into a magical girl. Her cat form doesn’t impact her magical girl form, and doesn’t appear very often, but nonetheless is worth mentioning.
Tumblr media
Cure Macaron - KiraKira Precure
We’ve previously covered why KiraPre Isn’t A Mew Knockoff, but does share some themes.
Macaron is this series’ purple coloured cat, and one of the oldest members of the group. She’s intelligent, talented, and beautiful, yet struggles with finding herself. She uses her cat reflexes to fight evil and learn about her own strengths and desires.
Tumblr media
Cure Cosmo - Star Twinkle Precure
Cure Cosmo may be comos themed, but she’s also an alien with cat-like gestures, tail, and ears! She’s even fascinated by fish and fishy foods. Unlike the others in this list, her cat traits primarily affect her regular life, rather than being caused or aiding in her magical one.
Tumblr media
Balala - Unknown
Unfortunately, there’s yet to be any English information available or any translation of Balala’s latest installment. Nonetheless, their cat themed magical girl is worth a mention, as the only known cat-themed magical girl in China.
Honorary Mention: Cardcaptor Sakura
Although the character herself is not cat themed, nor does she have catlike abilities, she does have a couple of cat themed outfits that are quite iconic as well as a lion-like fairy companion.

Magical Girls of Unusual Colours
We’ve previously covered timelines of different magical girls by colour - you can find all those particles HERE - but today we’ll be discussing some that never made the cut!
Tumblr media
Anime & Manga
Cardcaptor Sakura
Officially, Sakura has no official colour, though could easily fit under the Red or Pink umbrellas aesthetically, though not always thematically. This leaves her without any true colour fit at all!
Tumblr media
Magical Emi
With an interesting mix of predominant black gloves and detailing on a white suit, paired with a yellow skirt and pink undegarments, topped off with green-blue hair, Magical Emi not only fits into no category thematically but also aethstically.
Although she isn’t the first nor last of the Studio Pierrot magical girls to have an out there colour scheme, she definitely possesses the most unique colour palette.
Tumblr media
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Although arguably red, black, or pink, Utena and Anthy are far from traditional magical girls in terms of their story arcs and aesthetic. So it’s unsurprising that they are neither clearly colour coded, nor fulfill any of their potential colours.
Tumblr media
Nurse Angel Ririka SOS
Much like the Precure that came after her, Ririka is most easily cataloged as white or pink, yet her wands are purple and red, as are most of her merchandise items. Her tropes also don’t fit particularly well in any one category.
Tumblr media
Almost Everyone - Sailor Moon
Although some Sailor Moon characters like Mercury and Mars fall clearly under one type, others like Sailor Moon herself, Venus, and Uranus sport a multitude of colours and don’t fit the stereotypes around any of them. While others like Saturn have been coloured inconsistently, sometimes depicted as navy and other times purple. And we’re not going to talk about Dark Mars or Sailor Luna or any of the many musical variations!
With all that said, Sailor Moon was perhaps one of the anime that latter series took some of their coded inspiration from - though it wasn’t until the 2000s when  Tokyo Mew Mew and Ojamajo Doremi that truly codified and popularized the concept within the magical girl genre.
Tumblr media
Everyone - Wish Upon the Pleiades
While each girl does posses a colour details, their overall uniforms lend the group a much more colourless aesthetic, which is emphasized by their casual colours being different to their magical ones.
While their hair colours remain, their casual outfits and the items accessorizing their uniforms are different, such as Nanako’s black cape and hat, or  Itsuki’s red accessories.  One character even gains and entirely different coloured magical form later on.
However, they do fit relatively well within their initial magical colour’s tropes, with the exception Itsuki, whose form appears either navy, grey, or black accented depending on the media.
Tumblr media
Cure Echo - Pretty Cure All Stars
A movie-only cure, Echo is officially a white Cure. Depending on where she is depicted, her background has been pink, green, and blue, but her magical girl items and official colour are so far always white coded.
Tumblr media
Others in the franchise have fluctuated, such as Cure White technically being, in name, white, later being officially coded as blue, before having her colour redacted entirely in an anniversary art book. Others like Shiny Luminous, Cure Egret, and Cure Rythm have always had other, non-white official colours despite being considered such by parts of the fandom. This leaves Echo as the only consistently officially white cure to date.
Cure Black - Futari Wa Precure
Like Cure White, Cure Black has often been re-classed  - including officially - as pink, before having that redacted entirely. Nonetheless, as the only officially black-coded magical girl that isn’t somewhat evil or dark (at the time of this post anyway, we’d love to see that change) she definitely deserves a mention for her unique colour coding.
Tumblr media
Cure Cosmo, Cure Parfait, and Cure Summer
Once again, Precure has been notoriously inconsistent, with Parfait being the only one of these three officially being considered as “rainbow” by the official website. Yet, both Cosmo and Summer have been officially depicted with rainbow merchandise and items, and Parfait has been officially classed as Green in other texts and merchandise. Summer’s colour, though officially pink, is further complicated by having relatively little pink in her design.
Tumblr media
Western Cartoons & Comics
W.I.T.C.H.
The team of W.I.T.C.H. has outfits that are most notable for their complete lack of colour coding, going totally against the established tropes of the genre. In spite of this, their powers are actually colour coded, as are their transformation sequences, yet even so, none of them fit thematically well into their colour groupings.
Tumblr media
Winx Club - Everyone
Like Sailor Moon, some characters like Flora fit relatively well under one colour code throughout the series. But all members of this group have changed aesthetics over the years, and not always for good reasons.
We’ve previously covered Winx Club’s long history of whitewashing and racism, and unfortunately much of their colour palette changes have gone hand-in-hand with the removal of ethnic features, personality traits, and even backstories.
Tumblr media
What other magical girls of unusual colours do you know?
