Why does software suck? Will it ever get better? Was it always this bad?

I used to be enamored with Software in general. I thought that all software was crafted with love and care, obsessively, meticulously.

Come to find out that most software is written by the shear inertia of someone's wish for such software to exist, and it doesn't even come close to be crafted meticulously.
