When I was younger, I wish someone had told me straight-up that not all adults experience “a calling”. That many of them never find particular purpose in a career. That sometimes, their job is just what pays the bills and they have to seek satisfaction and fulfillment elsewhere. 

Because as an adult, this pervasive notion that there exists a perfect path for everyone, that people should love what they do, and that work is meant to function as a vehicle for fulfilling a person’s grand life destiny is not only inaccurate for many of us, it can be toxic.

The ideal is so ingrained that I have to remind myself constantly I’m not a failure because I don’t adore my job, and because I’m not rocking the world with my work. That is okay. 

Sometimes, work is just work. There isn’t always a perfect career path, magically waiting to be discovered. There might not be this THING you were born to do. Sometimes, you discover that what you really want to be when you grow up is “paid”.

#i say it all the time and i'll keep saying it #my dream job is making enough money to be comfortable #my passion is not needing to be stressed when i get a new bill #for everything else i have my hobbies that do not need to be monetized #i briefly considered a career as a musician since i was in band in high school and very good at it #and i enjoy music! #but i looked up the salaries and realized that my mix of talent and motivation would never get me to a salary i needed for my real passion #which is being financially comfortable #i went into computer science because i always liked computers and tech #i wouldn't call it a passion #but it's something i enjoy enough to not mind making a living from #and honestly it's enough #i have an electroc keyboard in my house for music and i write fanfic for creative outlets #i travel and run and make fun cocktails in my free time #i don't need my life purpose to come from my job #i'm in it for the money thanks #oh no it's me #lynne at work

#i don't particularly mind it #it's common misspelling so if people do it i'm like whatever #i do however get annoyed when they misspell my name in an email when they are sending it to my work email address #because my work email is literally firstname.lastname #my name is Right There #and yes i get that mistakes and misreadings sometimes happen #and also that thing where you see what you expect to see #but also #when i email someone new i look at their name like five times to make sure i'm spelling it correctly #(and yes i have still messed it. when i do that i will send a follow-up up email to apologize for the misspelling) #oh no it's me #lynne at work

one of the hardest lessons I had to learn as a grownup (that I am still re-learning all the time) is that whenever I'm trying to get something done and it stalls out, the only way to get it moving again is to randomly start calling and emailing people like hey I'm waiting for x thing but haven't heard back, what are the next steps.

and I hate hate hate that it almost always works. and that usually I have wasted weeks waiting for a response that will never come if I had not intervened.

still thinking about post-retirement yuhuang where huang shaotian goes on to become glory chairman while yu wenzhou stays at blue rain to run the training camp. it's the opposite of what anyone would have expected of their respective career paths.

but huang shaotian finds he loves the negotiation aspect of running the pro alliance. there are so many deals to be made and people to convince, and his sharp eye is so good at finding littke hidden things his skeptics want and manufacturing the opportunity to give it to them. for a price, of course, that aligns with what huang shaotian needs from them to push his agendas forward.

at blue rain, yu wenzhou is far less flashy. he's training the next generation of pros, reinforcing the culture of teamwork he's made blue rain famous for. in name, he's the team's head trainer yet over the years a parade of blue rain captains beat a path to his office. it's a delicate balance between quietly supporting them but giving them enough space to flourish. the main roster changes over the years but blue rain remains a team that's kind to its players.

there are occasional rumors that the gpa head office is unfairly biased towards blue rain, considering how often their head trainer is seen alongside the chairman. mostly people brush off the rumors as petty jealously. even decades after their retirement, everyone remembers blue rain's sword and curse.

a whole different slew of rumors surface when someone digs up the old marriage certificate.

hello! I'm the anon who's stopping by, I hope you're having a nice weekend! things over here are a little better. well the situation hasn't changed much but I'm slowly coming to terms with it, which is all I can ask for. and a few weeks ago we had some lovely, almost summer-like weather, which was super nice!! unfortunately this week it has been snowing (absolutely insane to me that it's snowing in mid April, as someone who has always lived in warm places until now) 😭 I was looking forward to finally wearing spring/summer clothes, but back to scarves and gloves it is. I hope the weather is nicer where you are!!

I've started watching leverage for the first time, which I wanted to let you know since I'm pretty sure I first heard of it years ago on your blog. I'm loving it so far!! I finished season 2 yesterday, and I'm excited to see where season 3 picks up considering how s2 ended! and I've really grown attached to all the characters! I love them all but Parker and Eliot are my favourites <3 Parker is just so delightful and relatable, and Eliot.... well let's just say I'm not immune to a character whose purpose is basically to defend and protect his family, to the point of self-sacrifice if needed. that always gets me. how about you, who's your favourite(s)?

hi anon, nice to see you again! i had a nice, relaxing weekend where i took some classes at the gym, read a lot of fic, and didn't do much else! we keep getting teased with nice weather and then it immediately gets chilly again. but no snow over here thankfully! snow in springtime should be illegal lol. i got a really cute denim jacket for spring and i still can't wear it, but hopefully that will change soon!

i can totally relate to "it's not getting better but i'm learning to live with it." sometimes, that's really all you can do. i think it counts as a win for both of us.

oooh leverage, how exciting!! i love leverage! what a great show and with great characters and such wonderful storytellng! leverage has a special place in my heart! and yesss parker i love her a lot! she's out there making family and jumping off buildings and being the best thief ever!

while i was watching the show, eliot was my favorite (and side character quinn who barely appears at all, but i love him a lot). but it's kind of funny, because looking back on the series, if i was going to watch it again for the first time ten years later (and me being ten years older) i think i would lean more towards sophie. something about a middle aged woman who gets an arc about finding herself is very appealing. also she's so hot send help.
