❝—But we have been cautious, I'd like to think—❞ He took in that cold stare which was unlike any expression Zachary had regarded him with in the past, and felt as if something was shifting between them, and in its place, a chasm as dark and muddled as his thoughts began to open. ❝—You know I care nothing for myself, but if I've done something to cause you any harm, I should like to know. I'm aware that I can be rather slow at catching at times.❞ He had made himself a promise to live honestly since he had loved Zachary, yet forgotten in his passion that the other was hard bound to society and its rules.

ㅤㅤThe coldness in his eyes was accompanied by an unmistakable disbelief, as if he felt betrayed by the mere utterance of the question. ❝ Perhaps you forget that society do not take too kindly to men like us. I do not think that Westminster would appreciate that one of its peers has a son arrested for buggery, ❞ Zachary exhales, his hands resting on his hips, ❝ We would be fools to be so reckless that we become the subject of the tabloids. ❞

[ Thinking about how since the first time Maurice opened the window of his bedroom at Penge and yelled 'Come!', he was calling out to Alec without even knowing it.
Thinking about how Maurice's subconscious was so entwined with Alec's, that since the third time they met and Alec accidentally touched him while running away from Borenius in the garden, Maurice was feeling him and his presence without even knowing it was him, and how he thought "he had not said something at that interview that he ought to have said, that he had missed out something vital from his confession to the doctor" after his visit with the hypnotist that was supposed to turn him straight, and that 'something' was Alec. ]

HOW DO YOU NEED TO BE TOUCHED ?
Tumblr media
fervently.
you crave a hug that cracks your ribs... the feeling of your wandering soul being crushed back into the bones that can't seem to hold it. you need a hand gripping yours so tightly you almost fear it may leave a bruise, a reminder that you are here. and that you are not alone.

It was a Saturday evening, when after a game of football which had dragged on to a little before sundown, the youths of the College Settlement, perhaps out of a developed sense of camaraderie which until then Maurice had not come to realise between himself and them, had invited him out for drinks.
As he settled into the friendly atmosphere after a round of beers, he at once felt that he didn't mind the accompaniment as much as he'd thought he would. Allowing his gaze to wander across the salon, he took in the other groups of people, tightly packed as they were around the tables. His gaze had been passing aimlessly, and was only snagged upon another's— a soldier, by the looks of his uniform, and quickly withdrew into his drink.
What he had not expected, was to be approached by the same man. At first, he anticipated some uncouth exchange, and pretended to ignore the other who was now stood beside him. Yet when the man spoke, he sensed no hostility in his tone, and turned towards him with a reserved smile. ❝—Oh, no. I'm here with some of my pupils; I teach them boxing and arithmetic, though very poorly.❞ He replied good-naturedly, gesturing towards the young men who were seated next to him.

Right by the Thames, warm and inviting light spills out of the windows and open door of Trafalgar Tavern. The patrons' merry banter and laughter filling the place with a pleasant atmosphere.
Seb and his mates sit by a window that looks out onto the river. They've been joking and messing about, drinking their pints, when his eye catches that of a handsome stranger sitting at the bar. Downing the last of his drink for courage, he walks over to the bar placing himself next to him.
He eyes him from the side for a moment, getting a closer glimpse of his striking features. He reminds him of a Greek statue he'd once seen, a chiseled face with blue eyes framed by golden locks. "I don't think I've ever seen you round here?"

Fighting or Sparring: Sentence Starters
(a mix, for either a serious fight or a friendly spar)
“Fine, I accept your challange!”
“Sorry but I won’t take it easy, not even with you.”
“There will be no mercy.“
“Power without idea isn’t justice.“
“Just give up already.”
“You know what will happen if you lose…”
“What?! B-but, how?!”
“I have awaited this day, for too long.”
“Is there no other way?“
“Go ahead and struggle!”
“Over already?“
“Do you want to die that badly?“
“Hm? I guess that was too much…“
“Don’t push yourself. Training will do no good with a broken limb.”
“Is something distracting you?”
“You’ve got some guts… for a fool.“
“Is this the best you can do?”
“You haven’t progressed at all. Focus.”
“Damn… I messed up.“
“You keep slipping up. You’re making easy mistakes.”
“It’s training now, but soon it could be a life or death situation.”
“Nothing will come of hate.“
“You can’t fight this with strength alone.”
“You’re wasting my time.”
“You still have a lot to learn.”
“That’s two out of three that I’ve gotten the upper hand.”
“You need to take this more seriously!”
“You’re still too weak.”
“Beg for mercy before me!“
“I didn’t mean to hurt you…”
“Kneel before me.”
“There won’t be anything left of you when I’m done.”
“I’ll make you regret ever crossing me.”
“Know your place.”
“You and me. Let’s go.”
“A fight with me is too dangerous.”
“You don’t know what you’re getting into.”
“Fine, you asked for it.”
“This should be easy.”
“So, you wanna fight?”
“Just to let you know, I’ve never lost a fight.”
“This is the end for you!”
“Not bad, but you can do better.”
“I’m not here to play with you.”
“I’ve got you pinned.”
“You could hardly stand, it’s over.”
“There, are you satisfied now?”
“You really thought you could win? How cute.“
“This place, will be your grave.”
“Your suffering will be over in a moment.”
“Did you really expect me, to yield to the likes of you?”
“Mark my words… I will kill you and I’ll be after your friends next.”
“Hmph. You don’t change much, do you?“
“You’re too impulsive… it’s reckless.”
“I’ll wipe that grin off your face.”
“Defeat me and ‘maybe’ I’ll tell you where your friend is.”
“It wasn’t a question, you need to take a break. We’ve been going at it for hours.”
“I’m telling you, there’s no chance of you beating me.”
“Just cause you’re cute, I’ll take it easy on you.”
“I’ll fight with one hand behind my back, see? Swing away.”
“Good, you’re holding up well.”
“Don’t get distracted, not even for a moment. Don’t avert your eyes.”
“Push yourself beyond your limits.”
“Your shoulders are tense. Don’t overthink it. Loosen up.”
“Feel like running away?”
“You’re too timid, it’s easy to see you as a target.”
“They’re not always going to be around to babysit you.”
“You’re going to die here, and easily.”

“He sat down by the fire, and, dulled though he was to impressions, Dr Barry noted the pose. It wasn’t artistic, yet it could have been called superb. He sat in his usual position, and his body as well as his face seemed gazing indomitable at the flames. He wasn’t going to knuckle under – somehow he gave that impression. He might be slow and clumsy, but if once he got what he wanted he would hold to it till Heaven and Earth blushed crimson.”

Okay so, I recently watched the deleted scenes from Maurice (will provide those to anyone who asks btw) and I realised that they cut out two of what I think are the most important scenes in the story. I’m not mad I’m just wondering why they would do that considering their significance (at least I think they’re significant)
The first scene I want to talk about is the one immediately after Maurice and Alec first sleep together. If you’ve read the book (no judgement if you haven’t, reading can be tricky) then you’ll know that in this scene Maurice asks Alec his name and Alec replies with ‘Scudder’ which is obviously his last name. This is significant because if you’re familiar with Edwardian society, the class divide between Upper and Working Class was absolutely enormous. I interpret Alec’s response to mean that he thinks he is so insignificant to Maurice that he doesn’t know his name at all. Maurice has to clarify he means Alec’s first name. Also, it wasn’t very common to use people’s first names too much back then -especially not staff like gamekeepers - so them sharing their first names is a sign that they have an emotional connection PLUS it shows that Maurice is capable of seeing them as equals. This scene adds emotional depth to their relationship rather than it just being purely sexual. If you watch this scene, the way that they seem so close is really sweet too. They were having a moment. This scene shows their transition from practically strangers to something far more and I’m a teeny bit disgruntled that they didn’t keep that in.
The other scene that was cut out is part of Maurice’s confrontation with Clive in the garden. In the book, right after he says the “i’ll tell you everything up to this point…” he keeps talking and gives Clive a really powerful speech (in my opinion)  and I don’t remember the exact words but it was something like “I was yours till death if you’d cared to keep me, once. But I belong to someone else now and he’s mine in a way that shocks you. Why don’t you stop being shocked and attend to your own happiness?” That’s not all of it but that’s the bit I want to talk about. I love this line so much because Maurice finally stands up for himself and essentially tells Clive to get fucked (in every sense of the word). At the start of the book we see a lot of Maurice tagging along after Clive and trying to be all intellectual like he is. Clive has always tried to teach him how to talk and act and now it’s come back to bite him in the ass, plus it’s even better because Maurice tells him exactly that. Clive tries to dismiss him by asking in a pretty patronising way “who taught you to talk like that?” And you know what? Like the badass mf he is, Maurice says “you, if anyone.” This is literally one of the most important moments in Maurice’s development because it’s this scene where he finally realises that he deserves happiness. He deserves to be happy with himself and to stop trying to ‘cure’ himself. He deserves someone who isn’t afraid to love him. I think that’s amazing and I have no clue why it was cut out.
Anyways, rant over, thank you for reading if you got this far. I already subjected two of my irl friends to this rant today and I could tell they were a tiny bit bored.

❛ You have conquered me, I am yours. ❜
@richardxoliverxmayhew BOOK STARTERS VOL.11     ANNA KARENINA
Tumblr media
Richard could not know that he had conquered Maurice in kind; that he had utterly and completely took possession of him—heart, mind, body and soul. For Maurice's clumsy tongue did not bear the words with which to express such a profound and joyous sentiment. Yet he held Richard in his arms, as a man would hold onto a rock amidst a hurricane, and kissed his lips again and again.
❝—And now, I shall never let you go. We will make our own life, and to hell with others. All we ever needed was the two of us.❞

❝—But what does it matter if there has been any chatter about us?❞ He had seldom thought of his own position in society with any consideration, yet the idea of losing Zachary, whose station in life was far above his own, and who must consequently care a great deal about it, alarmed him; hence the question which was posed as if challenging the other's views upon it.
