I'm back with another of my playlists <3
Okay so yk, VnC is like one of my core memories from high school. Oh all the time me and my bestie would spend talking about this manga all day, every day. Another core memory was emo music, especially MCR. I have loved MCR more than anything else in my entire life you don't even know.
So of course I ended up strongly associating my two biggest obsession at the time! Cue this playlist, that has me in a constant fight between wanting to add more songs to it and wanting to preserve the absolutely immaculate vibe that is a Vanitas playlist entirely made up of my 2019-2021 music taste, among which 50% upbeat pop-punk and 50% intenseley emo music.
This playlist caters to ME specifically but I hope someone in the VnC fandom gets it!
Enjoy <3

Me being absolutely amazed by the Puns Per Minute in the likes of Enjoy Your Slay or Rocking the Boat:
Seriously they wrote some absolutely killer lines
ice nine kills is one of my favorite bands because they understand the importance of these two things:
1. extremely specific movie references & wordplay
2. awesome knife and blood sound effects in almost every song

Okay I haven't read either Heaven's Feel or Hollow Ataraxia so didn't know much about any of them, but damn, that's actually really interesting.
Actually kind of tragic that these two still have to suffer and be seen as villains even when they are summoned back to a society that changed a lot since their times, and would treat people like them a lot more kindly, and does give someone like them a better fate. But as always, the Holy Grail War Wasn't Meant For Servants, even though they're summoned with the same promise of a miracle that draws the Masters in, and it keeps showing.
Honestly FSN Rider and FSN Caster don't even come off as villains through their backstories at least as they're provided across Fate Stay Night and mainly Fate Hollow Ataraxia. The fact that they are portrayed as villanous and play themself up as such and see themselves as such feels more like a product of greek misogyny and their popular perception influencing them as Servants. Like, was Rider defending her sisters from dubious male persuers and Caster lashing out at everyone around her after what happened to her really evil, or are those things just seen as evil by the greek society their common interpretation of their stories came from that don't sympathize with the plights of women? Rider and Caster can act and pretend like they're evil all they want because of what they did, but I'm not convinced, and you can honestly argue that the plot of Heaven's Feel thematically and narratively runs counter to their beliefs given the sympathy and love given towards Matou Sakura and her suffering and lashing out from said suffering.

I saw a post talking about how Terry Pratchett only wrote 400 words a day, how that goal helped him write literally dozens of books before he died. So I reduced my own daily word goal. I went down from 1,000 to 200. With that 800-word wall taken down, I’ve been writing more. “I won’t get on tumblr/watch TV/draw/read until I hit my word goal” used to be something I said as self-restraint. And when I inevitably couldn’t cough up four pages in one sitting, I felt like garbage, and the pleasurable hobbies I had planned on felt like I was cheating myself when I just gave up. Now it’s something I say because I just have to finish this scene, just have to round out this conversation, can’t stop now, because I’m enjoying myself, I’m having an amazing time writing. Something that hasn’t been true of my original works since middle school.
And sometimes I think, “Well, two hundred is technically less than four hundred.” And I have to stop myself, because - I am writing half as much as Terry Pratchett. Terry fucking Pratchett, who not only published regularly up until his death, but published books that were consistently good.
And this has also been an immense help as a writer with ADHD, because I don’t feel bad when I take a break from writing - two hundred words works up quick, after all. If I take a break at 150, I have a whole day to write 50 more words, and I’ve rarely written less than 200 words and not felt the need to keep writing because I need to tie up a loose end anyways.
Yes, sometimes, I do not produce a single thing worth keeping in those two hundred words. But it’s much easier to edit two hundred words of bad writing than it is to edit no writing at all.

making visual novels is great if you enjoy the idea of writing a book while also having to put on a puppet show to keep the reader from killing you with their teeth

Oh! While we are on the topic of Furina!
I tried out Spotify in the time I was gone and found I kinda like making character playlists sometimes! I have some more made already so I'll be posting them here from time to time.
How anyone ever manages to make character playlists that are like 6 hours long with over a hundred song beats me, like I'm happy when I know 20 songs that actually fit a character, and effing proud of myself if I can think of 30 lmao, so my playlists will typically be anywhere between 1 and 2 hours long uwu
Anyway I love her and I like the song selection I got for her! Good mix of himedere, sadness and sad himedere lmao.
Hope this interests some of you!

Astolfo and revenge
(Something I posted on twitter, that I'll add a bit to)
I don't think the message of Astolfo's story is "vengeance only does more harm than good". It's pointed out multiple times in the manga that vengeance/hatred is what keeps him going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, Astolfo is morally opposed to murder, he KNOWS. I genuinely believe he still doesn't want to kill, and only kills because he is stuck in a cycle, realizes this, and is trying to keep others out of it.
"Revenge/murder is bad" it not the lesson he has to learn. I have the theory that his story is about how people keep up discrimination so they can benefit from it.
(1) His family was "an active player in the war against vampires", and I get the feeling that's why the Granatum house is so wealthy. I mean, they had strong ties to the Church, while regularly holding the seat of Garnet. Of course Astolfo's father told him to kill vampires, he needs to be the Garnet Paladin so the family keeps its wealth and status! There's the implication in the manga that the Granatum family (and the Obsidian house) have their status thanks to their participation in the war. Once an institution benefits from something, it won't easily let go of that, no matter how morally apprehensive it is.
(2) Charles wants to make Astolfo the Garnet Paladin so he can become a symbol for the Chasseurs (or at least the vampire eradication faction, and like I said, killing vampires is what gave these people power, so it is very possible the vampire eradication faction is a reflection of that). Charles is building a narrative: "Astolfo Granatum's family was injustly killed by vampires, now he kills to avenge them, therefore he is justified to kill vampires". The weapon of the Garnet Paladin is named "Pillar of Justice". That Astolfo fights for justice is part of the whole act!
(3) I really think Astolfo kept resisting against his fate of "killing vampires". His father gives him the knife and he gets scared, Charles tells him to pick up Louisette and he gets scared...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, he gives up. His self-hatred, carefully upheld by Charles, is too strong. He has no other options left, especially when Roland leaves him! This proves to me that he only "takes revenge" because he felt like there was nothing else for him left. I really want to emphasize the "he gave up his struggle" here.
So, I came to a conclusion that surprised me at first! "Hatred isn't automatically bad, preying on that hatred to push an agenda is bad". Astolfo is a victim of the institution he works for. That is the message, I believe.
I think that theme will be addressed in the current dham arc as well. So far it seems it's building towards it, with the whole scene of Vanitas explaining to Noé how discrimination works.
