ââI am not the first person you loved. You are not the first person I looked at with a mouthful of forevers. We have both known loss like the sharp edges of a knife. We have both lived with lips more scar tissue than skin. Our love came unannounced in the middle of the night. Our love came when weâd given up on asking love to come. I think that has to be part of its miracle. This is how we heal. I will kiss you like forgiveness. You will hold me like Iâm hope. Our arms will bandage and we will press promises between us like flowers in a book. I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat on your skin. I will write novels to the scar of your nose. I will write a dictionary of all the words I have used trying to describe the way it feels to have finally, finally found you. And I will not be afraid of your scars. I know sometimes itâs still hard to let me see you in all your cracked perfection, but please know: whether itâs the days you burn more brilliant than the sun or the nights you collapse into my lap your body broken into a thousand questions, you are the most beautiful thing Iâve ever seen. I will love you when you are a still day. I will love you when you are a hurricane.â â Clementine von Radicsâ
Harvey brought some unexpected surprises, but it opened to door to some amazing changes. These were my main projects for 2018! Swipe to see a BEFORE pic of one of the bathrooms. I remodeled my parents' showers from top to bottom, from plumbing to walls to the tile to accessories MYSELF! Had some assistance with things here & there if someone was around. Refined some skills; learned some new. Still have another floor to re-grout & build a new drain for a new vanity, but I have to say that this was fun even when I ran into small issues! Now with all that said... who wants to buy me an orbital sander for Christmas?! đđđđđ jk jk #JaneOfAllTrades #MasterOfSome #INeedAMassage #GiveMeAllThePowerTools https://www.instagram.com/p/Brv0ng7gGby2hPeKMDdgeiOruTmO4r_LmJHei80/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1km1oug46n50e
Another Texas MD-to-be agrees with this message!!! You have the right! Go early vote! Bring an additional ID just in case. If you get denied for any reason, request a provisional ballot!
Yâall
GO EARLY VOTE
Early voting in Texas starts tomorrow, October 22nd and runs through November 2nd.Â
Perks:
-Way shorter line than on election day
-You donât have to vote at your assigned polling placeÂ
-You can vote on a Saturday or Sunday! How cool is thatÂ
THIS ELECTION MATTERS. SO MUCH. DONâT SIT THIS ONE OUT
ESPECIALLY in our senate race in Texas (!!!!) and all across the country. AND ALSO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. And state and local elections too!!!! It all matters. It really truly does.Â
I donât understand why young people on this website keep using the real issue of voter suppression as an excuse to be content with or apathetic toward the idea of non-participation. If your vote didnât matter, as some suggest, they wouldnât be suppressing it in the first place, and therefore any complacency is complicit with that suppression. The idea that a faction of our elected government is afraid of the change you can effect should spur you on, not give you pause.
Using the existence of voter suppression as a reason not to vote when youâre capable of voting is a smack in the face to anyone who wants to but canât.
Black Lightning comes back for its Sophomore season starting October 9 on the CW, moving to the networkâs fall schedule. Newsarama had a chance to talk to the cast and crew of the television show at Comic-Con International: San Diego to get you the scoop on what to expect from Black Lightning season 2.
Black Lightning himself, Cress Williams, when speaking about the premiere said, âThe show picks up about a week after the finale, and the through line at the beginning of the season is consequences.â
Executive producer Salim Akil discussed the political items we will see in the upcoming season, âThe continuation of the green light effect. Green light, and Iâm sure you all know, is just a metaphor for crack and how it invaded the black community. Itâs also a metaphor for the opioid addiction in the white community.â
âWhat we intend to do is give a strong nod to the comic books,â he continued. âThe first four episodes will be under the banner of the book of consequences. The rise of the green light babies. We are going to continue to deal with the aspect of the children being in the pods and experimentation in the community.â
âBut one of the things we also want to do, I think this would be interesting, is that one of the biggest stereotypes in America is that all white people are rich and doing great,â Akil explained. âOne of the things we intend to show is thatâs not the case because that stereotype not only hurts the country - it hurts white folk and it hurts black people because it gives you the idea that there are some people that are supreme and not experiencing the same thing as you. One of the things the opioids addiction has done is that even the cultural playing field. We had crack, and in the white community thereâs opioids. What weâve said in our show this season is that the same people have put the same type of things in the same type of communities - poor communities.â
âWe want to build a bridge, someone asked me earlier what genre of television I want to do, I want to do the genre of what I would call bridge building, is that your ass is poor in the white community, our ass is poor in the black community,â he concluded. âNow you may not be getting shot like we do in our communities, but you are going through some similar things, and if we keep pretending that we donât have more shit in common than we have differences than we are going to continue to be exploited as Americans.âÂ
Akil also spoke about the Outsiders, saying âYou will see more of it. I mean itâs not a secret. Itâs just the choices of who, and what their powers will be. Grace Choi is coming back. So thatâs going to be fun, most people donât know that.â
In regard to Anissaâs love life actress Nefessa Williams said, âYou will see a little bit more of Anissaâs love life, and her trying to juggle and manage love, career, being an activist, and her family is always reminding her donât forget that you need to get out there. Sheâs so hell bent on justice and fighting for her community that sometimes she forgets that she needs to look for love. Youâll see more of that this season.â Â
Nefessa Williams also added what she wanted to see with her hero dynamic with her sister this season, explaining âShe tries to convince her (Jennifer) that this is a gift that we are supposed to be using and we are not normal, face it, we are who we are. I want to see in Season 2 us teaming up and hitting the streets together. Can you imagine how fun and bad ass that would be?â
China Anne McClain gave us a huge teaser about her characterâs step into super heroics, saying âWe are filming right now, and weâve only done a few episodes so far, but I have seen my suit. I have done a fitting for it, I hope Iâm not saying too much, but whatever, and I can say you guys are going to like it. Itâs different from Thunder and Black Lightning.â
She also says, âI think sheâs going to be a very sassy superhero. Like at the end of the season we got to see her pick up Proctor and slam him on his side with her powers. I feel like sheâs going to be doing a lot of stuff she shouldnât be doing thatâs just spur of the moment like that. So, sheâs going to have to live up to the name of superhero not just this is a teenager with some super powers.â Â Â
During the SDCC panel, it was announced that Jordan Calloway who plays Jenniferâs boyfriend Khalil AKA Painkiller has been promoted to series regular. McClain said, âJennifer acts like she doesnât have time for him. Sheâs like I hate you, you killed my Dad â even though Khalil does not know Black Lightning is her father, he doesnât know she has superpowers. All of this underlining anger she has heâs confused by it, like why are you tripping. Thatâs something we are going to dive deep into this season.â Â Â
Black Lightning returns for its second season on the CW October 9.
This is important. Intern year was, by far, the most difficult thing Iâve had to do. This includes cancer, grad school, and medical school. Itâs really fucking hard. The hours are long and, often times, inhumane. The patients can be incredibly mean and unappreciative of your time and care. The learning curve is near vertical. This is near impossible to handle alone. Rely on your support system. Try to hold on to at least one non-medicine related activity. Regardless of what the medical education system seems to be saying, remember that you are a person, having a life outside of the hospital doesnât make you a bad doctor, and you are allowed to put yourself first. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SACRIFICE YOUR HEALTH FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR PATIENTS. Seek out the support you need. Utilize Jeopardy as needed. This will be a hard year; take care of yourself and take care of your co-interns. Donât let anyone around you drown, especially if that âanyoneâ is YOU.
Rule #2: Rely on your upper level residents.
Accept help when it is offered. Ask for help when you need it. This is harder to do than it seems. After four years of pain, you finally have that MD (or DO) behind your name. Your patients and assorted hospital staff are calling your doctor. You feel like youâre supposed to know what youâre doing⌠but you donât. THIS IS OKAY. Medical school doesnât prepare you for this. You are supposed to be stupid. If you came into intern year already knowing how to care for patients then residency would be a moot point. Absorb as much knowledge as possible from your upper levels. Ask all the questions. Quite literally there is no such thing as a stupid question during intern year. If you are drowning and feeling overwhelmed to the point of being unable to accomplish your work, SPEAK UP. No one is perfect, and your upper level may not recognize that youâre drowning. Remember, half of your upper levels were interns just a few hours/days ago. We are all still learning. Make your needs known, and accept our help when itâs offered. Especially early in the year.
Rule #3: Organization is the name of the game.
Your primary objective as an intern is to get shit done. Simple. You canât do that if youâre disorganized. So, first things first, get yourself a system of organizing your patient-related tasks and stick with it. Write down everything. EVERYTHING. Afternoon urine output check on a heart failure patient? Write it down. Told a patient youâd drop back by his room to clarify some questions? Write it down. Need to remember to write your daily progress note? Write it down. Need to enter in daily labs for tomorrow? Write it down. You get the picture. I personally used the folded side of a printed patient list, but any organization system that prevents tasks from falling between the cracks is golden. Good interns arenât the ones who know everything. Good interns are the ones who let as little as possible fall through the cracks. Book knowledge, knowing the next step in management? Overrated. That comes with time and repetition. This is how you get there.
Rule #4: Use your med students.
Letâs be honest here. By the time intern year starts, the third years are starting to get into a groove. Theyâve been around for a couple of months at least, and, chances are, know way more about logistics of the hospital and the basics of the EMR than you do. The AIs are an even more seasoned source of info. Use these guys to your advantage. Given how useless you feel on any given day as a med student, I found it kind of nice to be able to help the new interns.Â
Rule #5: Donât let anyone rush you into making a non-urgent decision!
This was really hard for me to grasp. I felt like a failure every time Iâd get paged about a cross-cover situation that I couldnât immediately handle. Itâs fine, guys. Very few situations require an immediate answer. Take your time. Paged about a patient with hypotension? As long as theyâre mentating appropriately, take a few minutes to see where the trend of their blood pressure over the day. Check to see if thereâs a recent TTE to determine if they can handle a big IVF bolus. You have time. Donât let anyone try to pressure you into making an immediate non-critical decision. Itâs totally ok to admit that you need to look at the patientâs chart first and youâll call them back in a few minutes. This isnât a weakness. This is you practicing good medicine.
Rule #6: Play well with others.
Medicine is a team sport. Your part, while important, it only one piece of a larger whole. Youâre going to have a bunch of different, though usually complementary, professions surrounding you in the hospital. Getting along in a team sport is all about appreciating everyoneâs POV and contribution. Never, ever, ever dismiss someoneâs input. If your nurse is telling you that she is concerned about a patient, ask her why. Try to understand. Donât just blow her off as being paranoid. This sounds ridiculously basic but, trust me, that reaction is really tempting when youâve got notes to write and seven other patients who also need your attention. Disagree with a nurseâs request for pain meds, anxiolytics, an ekg, x-ray, etc? Think out loud. Explain your reasoning. One of two things typically happen. One, she already knows everything youâre telling her and just had to pass along the request to get the patient denied from âthe doctorâ. Two, you teach her something. Beyond nursing, youâll also be interacting with pharmacists, nutritionists, respiratory therapists, etc. Strike up a conversation with any of these guys and youâll be AMAZED what all these professions can teach you. Trust me⌠itâs a lot.
Rule #7: Donât let bad interactions taint your view of an entire profession.
Youâre going to meet asshole nurses. Youâre going to meet asshole doctors. Youâre going to meet asshole patients. It happens. Difficult as it may be, donât let one interaction taint your view of an entire population.Â

As some of you probably know, my house was hit by Hurricane Harvey. We were a lot luckier than others given that we only encountered 8-10 inches throughout the house. Since a lot of things had to be replaced, it presented the perfect opportunity to make some desired changes to the bathrooms in addition to the other repairs Iâve been doing. This is the reason why I have been on an extended hiatus from Tumblr. I know you guys have missed my episode reviews!Â
This is the before and after! And if youâre wondering... yes I am a Jane-of-all-trades, master of some! đđđ ENJOY! One bathroom down, one to go!Â
When I think about the Mulan Live Action remake, I'm like... DISHONOR! DISHONOR ON YOUR WHOLE CORPORATION DISNEY!!! This isn't even Mulan. It's a whole different movie. Change the name, keep the actors. That's better than this tripe they're trying to put together!
Turning Mulanâs main villian into a female witch is such a shitty move. Mulan defeated a powerful man in front of a nation where women werenât looked as equal and strong to men. This movie showed a woman breaking so many barriers by going up against the most feared man in China, and using her smarts and wits to take BOTH him AND HIS ARMY down. I get that live action remakes tend to have some changes and some changes are not gonna live up to everyoneâs expectations âŚ..but this one change I 100% cannot get behind because itâs such a disservice to what Mulan meanât and represented. Having this movie be directed by a white person, and written only by white people is such a bullshit move, Disney. Yeah, Disney had white writers for the original Mulan movie too, but they also had a female Chinese person write the screenplay because you canât fucking write a story centered around a Chinese legend without involving Chinese people to work on that story.Â
I am just going to think that the writers had to create a plan B because they couldn't get Joshua Leonard to come back for the second half of the season due to his film commitments and used Tina Majorino's character, Florence, as an extension of the seed planted at the beginning of the season. Doesn't eliminate the fact that this "white lie" drama regressed all the characters for the sake of drama. There were other angles that could have been taken to meet the end plot goals whether the show gets renewed or not. Oh well! đđđ
