Happy birthday to the enigmatic Kieran White! He is cunning, but kind-hearted. An egotistical flirt, but also a sweetheart. He can be extremely dangerous one moment, yet goofy the next. He’s done terrible things, but he’s no monster. He’s an imperfect human doing his best to survive the cruel system he was thrust into.
I admire Kieran so much. He’s a fighter, having persevered through more pain and suffering than anyone should ever have to endure. Others would have given up, but he kept going. He’s clung to his humanity the only way he knows how—through drawing. But when he meets Lauren, he discovers another way to hold onto his true self. Being with her, and working together to put a dent in the Phantom Scythe’s plans, might lead to his salvation. All of the lives he’s taken are a heavy burden on his soul, but he’s finally found a path toward healing—no matter how tenuous it might be.

His hand stills as his sword reaches her neck. The pressure is enough to draw blood, but not enough to cause serious injury. When he’d kicked her earlier, her APD mask must have come off, because he can see her eyes now. They’re a unique shade of gold, and…familiar for some reason? But more than that, her expression captures his gaze. She glares at him fiercely, not an ounce of fear in her eyes, despite his sword at her neck.
Kieran has taken many souls for the Phantom Scythe, and he knows all too well how people tend to react in their final moments. The pleas, the sobs, but most of all, the palpable terror they exude. They all look at him with horror splayed across their faces, before it’s replaced with streaks of blood. That look in their eyes…it never leaves him. Yet here she is, her life in the balance, and she’s staring him down. All it would take is one flick of his wrist, and she would be gone. The light behind those pensive eyes would immediately snuff out. But he doesn’t move.
Purple Hyacinth readthrough: Episode 2 - Somber Silhouette
Tumblr media
Purple Hyacinth is a webtoon about parkour
When the maid of Mrs. Grayson runs outside in a state of utter panic, Lauren and her colleagues hear a gunshot, indicating another potential victim. Lauren quickly makes the decision to pursue the assassin she can see running across the rooftops. Meanwhile, Kym, Will, and Detective March enter the mansion to begin their investigation into the murders.
If you expected a webtoon solely focused on unraveling mysteries, then you're in for a surprise. This is the story of an officer and an assassin who show off their parkour skills. But jokes aside, I am in awe of Lauren's ability to keep up with Kieran. She fearlessly follows him, despite the dangers of jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And let's talk about how extra Kieran is during this chase - jumping off the roof Assassin's Creed style and smirking at Lauren before doing so? He definitely knows how to add some flair. The move where he leaps over the table instead of simply going around it cracks me up every time. He was definitely taunting her, playing a game of "catch me if you can".
Despite facing obstacles, Lauren remains determined and persistently pursues him.
I also have to mention how much I adore Kieran's Purple Hyacinth attire. His character design is simply amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's all fun and games until you realize the culprit is Ardhalis' most fearsome assassin
As Lauren chases her future husband the assassin, Kym and Will stumble upon the lifeless body of Mr. De La Rocca. Will confirms the man's death, prompting Kym to make a joke. "Can't you see he's trying to charm you with how drop-dead gorgeous he is?" I have to admit that when I first read PH I wasn't really drawn to Kym as a character. It's not that I didn't like her, I just couldn't quite connect with her. The joke she makes in this scene is inappropriate and out of place, but I think it could be her way of coping with the situation. Later on, when Harvey dies, we see a different side of Kym - one that is serious and no longer making jokes.
Despite her initial joking, Kym becomes concerned when Will tells her to stop. He notices the purple flower next to the victim and immediately recognizes its importance. Lauren is currently chasing after the city's most notorious assassin. "He was here," Will states, not needing to say the name for Kym to understand who he's referring to. She rushes outside, determined to catch up to Lauren before she falls into a deadly trap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why did Kieran hesitate?
Lauren catches up to the Purple Hyacinth in a dead-end alley, but he is determined to escape and they both engage in a heated hand-to-hand combat. I am once again surprised at how strong and fast Lauren is. Her skills are definitely on par with his. But in the midst of their ongoing battle, Lauren's fear for her life grows when she realizes she has lost her gun. When she turns around in a fit of anger and frustration, he kicks her mask off.
On a side note, just how flexible is this man?
Tumblr media
I think Kieran's intention was to incapacitate her with a kick to the face, but he fails and only manages to knock off her mask. He then reaches for his sword, ready to strike and end her life, but upon seeing her face, he freezes in hesitation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love everything about this moment. The art and lighting are perfection. The soundtrack "From the Start" is playing in the background when Kieran hesitates, adding a sense of peace to this intense episode. His sword rests against her throat. It's as if everything around them fades away when their eyes meet. With Lauren's mask removed, she appears vulnerable, and we finally get to see Kieran's face for the first time.
Their first meeting, especially with Kieran's hesitation, has an air of mystery that adds to the overall intrigue of the plot.
Tumblr media
On that night you could have killed me. But you hesitated, and I didn't know why. If only I did, everything would have been different.
The question of why Kieran hesitated has been debated by the fandom for years, and even after 158 episodes, we still don't have an answer. We do know, however, from episode 54 that Kieran felt a sense of humanity when he met Lauren in that alleyway, and that there is a link with the framed painting in his drawing room. I will talk more about the painting when we reach episode 54 but it seems to hold some significance in his hesitation, as well as the person Kieran used to be protective over (Dylan?). Could Dylan have mentioned Lauren to Kieran while they were captured by the PS? Is Lauren depicted in the painting itself? Perhaps they had a brief encounter in the past that he subconsciously remembered upon meeting her again. These are just some of the many questions surrounding Kieran's hesitation.
The line "If only I did, everything would have been different" hints at a possible alternate outcome if Lauren had known the reason for his hesitation. This leads me to believe that his hesitation is somehow tied to Dylan as well. If only Lauren had known the reason from the start, she might have understood why he became the Purple Hyacinth. She would have had answers about Dylan from the beginning. Her search for the truth about him and her ten-year fixation would have ended there. Lauki's partnership might have been different, perhaps even leading to an earlier romantic relationship if their secrets were laid bare so soon. But then, would they have formed the same level of connection without this lingering mystery? We don't know the answer to that, but it would have been a very different story than the one we know now, that's for sure.
Hopefully we will finally get answers about Dylan and why Kieran hesitated in part 2 of season 3.

Purple Hyacinth readthrough: Episode 1 - "Lovely Lady"
The episode starts with the murder of Mrs. Greyson and Mr. De La Rocca by the Purple Hyacinth. These panels are really cool. I love the dark and ominous atmosphere. We don't see Kieran's face until he meets Lauren for the first time later that night, further shrouding his character in mystery and leaving us to speculate about his thoughts and feelings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seven hours prior to the killings, Lauren is on a date with Mr. Evans. She seems completely disinterested as she gazes out of the window, barely listening to his words. Little does she realize that in a few months, she'll be sitting in this very spot with the love of her life instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evans compliments her eyes and beauty, but she brushes it off. She tells him that she has been occupied with work, leaving little time to notice when men express interest in her. Or perhaps she's been too preoccupied searching for the truth about what happened Dylan?
Kym's introduction is absolutely comical. Her head-banging against the window, in an attempt to help Lauren, gives us an instant understanding of her personality. As soon as she and Lauren are outside the cafe, it becomes apparent that Lauren has been trying to date for some time now - a fruitless effort to move forward with her life. It's likely she's only doing it to please her uncle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't worry, Lauren. The next man you go out with won't be a weirdo.
My favorite moment in this episode is when Lauren calls out Mr. Evans for cheating on his wife and puts him in his place. Her boldness didn't go unnoticed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
See that smirk on his face? They haven't even spoken yet, but he's already down bad. Lauren is definitely his type.
It has been a decade since the Allendale tragedy, yet Lauren still cannot let go and move on. She has spent the past 10 years consumed by her search for answers about Dylan. Her efforts have left her feeling frustrated and drained. Suddenly, she is startled awake by a disturbing phone call informing her of a murder and urgently calling her to the crime scene. Unbeknownst to her, this event will alter the course of her life forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It just dawned on me that there's a parallel between the panels of Kieran in the beginning of the episode and the last panels of Lauren. Both are seen wearing their masks, concealing their true identities in some way - Kieran with his hidden face and mysterious persona as a famous assassin, and Lauren literally puts on her police uniform and mask as she transforms back into her professional identity. This adds an extra layer of significance to their first encounter in episode 2.

Purple Hyacinth readthrough: Episode 0 - "Prologue", Part 2
I love the way this panel of adult Lauren and her childhood self signifies the shift from the present to a flashback of Lauren's past. It's an excellent example of visual storytelling, transporting us back in time, providing insight into what led Lauren to seek revenge against the Phantom Scythe.
Tumblr media
The Allendale station tragedy, the rise of the Phantom Scythe, and Dylan are all introduced in a way that leaves us wanting more. We don't see everything that happened, but it's enough to pique our interest. Lauren carries a sense of responsibility for this past event and her determination to bring down the Phantom Scythe is most likely fueled by personal motivations related to Dylan's loss in the disaster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I needed to keep going." The use of the past tense in the quote catches my attention and leads me to speculate that Lauren may be narrating this story in the future. It's also worth noting how this moment parallels Kieran's inner thoughts from episode 73 ("I have to keep going"). I believe that this parallel supports the idea that their goal of taking down the Phantom Scythe revolves around the same individual (Dylan).
I did write about this Lauki parallel before, you can find the post here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will commends Lauren for her actions, and she thanks him while putting her mask back in place. Despite being one of her closest friends and knowing about her determination to seek justice for Dylan's death, Will can never truly grasp the immense burden of guilt she carries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lauren keeps her walls up around her friends, not wanting to appear weak or burden them with her emotions. So she quickly puts on a facade and reverts back to her tough police officer persona before Will can detect any hint of how she truly feels.

Oooo, the idea that the prologue could be foreshadowing the eventual fall of the monarchy is ✨DELICIOUS ✨
Purple Hyacinth readthrough: Episode 0 - "Prologue", Part 1
The story starts with a gunshot and a quote that hints at Lauren's unique ability to distinguish between truth and lies, yet also highlights her ultimate blindness. As your eyes trail down the panels, following the bullet's path, they are met with a mysterious image of hyacinths stained with blood. This intrigues the reader and sets the tone for the entire webtoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't help but wonder about the meaning behind these panels. Could they represent Kieran's supposed fake death and the end of the Purple Hyacinth? Maybe Lauren plays a role in helping him, indicated by the gun. Alternatively, it could symbolize a revolution and downfall of the monarchy, as the hyacinths are the royal crest.
The story throws us straight into a heart-pumping scenario as we meet our protagonist, Lauren Sinclair, chasing after a member of the Phantom Scythe named Krist Schaeffer who had planted a bomb in the theater. In this intense moment, we get a glimpse of Lauren's personality - she is both brave and reckless, racing headfirst into danger with her ability helping her navigate the situation. She figures out the grenade isn't a real one, catches up to the criminal and subdues him. In her desperation, she shouts at him to reveal which wire to cut.
The artwork is truly impressive. I love these panels so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks to her ability to detect lies, Lauren ensures the correct wire is cut and successfully defuses the bomb. Her unique talent undoubtedly makes her a remarkable police officer. After a brief encounter with her colleague Harvey she retreats to an alleyway and removes her mask. In this moment, she allows herself to be vulnerable and shows her true emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I stopped it this time... and yet... There were moments I wished I never knew." Is her ability a blessing or a curse?
While it proved to be beneficial in saving lives this time, it also serves as a constant reminder of the explosion she couldn't prevent in the past and the guilt she carries because of it.
