This is so real 💀 I've had a oneshot in the works for about two weeks now on how I think Kwazii joined the octonauts and I literally don't have the energy to finish it because it's my first year in college and this campus is DRAINING me 😭😭😭 I did work on it last night tho and it's just over 2,000 words and not quite near the end
If I posted it on AO3 would y'all read it or would y'all prefer I kept my works on Tumblr?
Sorry I haven't posted a lot; school just started.

I come bearing an Octonauts oneshot
This one was requested by the lovely @jackal-lantern I really hope you like it and I'm so sorry it took me this long to post, I know it's on the shorter side but I didn't want to make it too long and drag it on. Thank you for the request, I really enjoyed writing this one :)
shifter au***
With a deep sigh, Barnacles trudged into his room. The chilled air that hit him was a welcomed change after the hours he’d spent working.
What a crappy day. Well that wasn’t quite fair. The results had been well worth the work they’d done. Though, no matter how many times he repeated that, he didn’t feel any less drained.
Cleaning up and putting his pajamas on was a blur as he thought back on the day’s mission.
The Octonauts had been moving creatures off of and away from an underwater volcano that was due to erupt, and making sure that they didn’t miss anybody proved to be significantly more difficult than any of them anticipated. It was an ‘all hands on deck’ sort of situation, and even then, it still took them hours.
But because of their hard work, there had been no casualties after the eruption, and they helped all of the creatures find new homes, which was amazing. They would go back tomorrow to ensure everybody was adjusting nicely, but besides that, they were completely done.
And it was all worth it, he reminded himself, even if it did leave him almost overheated and entirely exhausted.
Barnacles dragged himself to his bed and dramatically collapsed onto it, not bothering to cover himself with his blanket. He just wanted to be cold for a few minutes.
Just as he got comfortable, his eyes drooping shut, sleep just outside of his grasp, he heard a cruel ringing from the tablet on his wall.
Could there be a worse time to call someone?
He debated just letting it ring. He could go to sleep, dream peacefully, let his body rest…
But what if it was an emergency?
Damn him and his overthinking. He pulled himself back out of bed and over to the tablet, answering the call. He could have been asleep by now.
To his surprise, it was his twin sister, Bianca.
Despite his mood, he spoke with joy and delight, “Bianca! It’s good to see you, how’ve you been?”
Bianca smiled at her brother, so grateful for the tablet the Octonauts had given her that allowed her to regularly contact him. She’d be hesitant to admit it, but she missed being able to see him all the time. “I’ve been good!” She said, looking behind him and seeing the dark waters outside of his pod, “ooh, where are you?”
Barnacles smiled at her curiosity and glanced at the ocean just on the other side of his window, “at the moment, we’re off the coast of South America,” he hummed, noting that she was just in her den.
“What’s the occasion, Feather Paws?” She joked, laughing when he rolled his eyes.
“A volcano erupted,” Barnacles answered, choosing to not respond to the teasing childhood nickname.
“Oh,” Bianca said, hesitating for a second before following it up with, “everything went alright?”
Barnacles nodded, “we got everyone off the volcano just in time with no casualties and minimal injuries, and after everything cooled down, we found everyone new homes.”
She could see that her brother was a bit more than tired, but she didn’t point it out, instead saying, “that sounds like a lot of hard work.”
“It was, but it was worth it,” he said, looking from his tablet to his wall, where he knew Kwazii was on the other side and saying “I got to see my whole team work together for the sake of those creatures. They really rose to the challenge today Bianca, I’m really proud of all of them.”
Bianca could see that he meant every word of praise as he spoke of his team’s accomplishments. “I’m sure you are,” she commented, smiling again when Barnacles looked back at her.
“Enough about me and my day, what have you been up to?” He asked curiously, returning her smile.
“Oh, nothing much,” Bianca said, though that wasn’t really true. She couldn’t say what she had really been up to just yet. She was waiting for the right time to give him the news… And it didn’t look like tonight was going to be that night. “Where else have you been recently?” She asked him, wanting to hear about all of his cool adventures.
And he indulged her, telling her about all of the amazing things he’d gotten to do and see over the past few weeks, of the growth and love he’s seen in his team. And Bianca loved to hear about it. She thought that the way he talked about his fellow Octonauts was so sweet, and she found how much it made him sound like a dad to be so funny.
She let him ramble on for a while before interjecting, “oh, that one reminds me of when we were cubs!” She laughed, “when you met Boris, and Mum told you that you had to leave him and go back to the den. I still remember the look on your face.”
Barnacles had been talking about a baby turtle that they encountered recently and how, much to Kwazii’s dismay, they could not keep her and take her back to the Octopod. He chuckled softly at Bianca’s comparison, “yes, it was something like that.”
Thinking about Boris made something else come to Bianca’s mind, “oh, do you remember the time you snuck out to see him and Mum found out?”
“I was scared for my life, how could I forget?” Barnacles replied jokingly, and both of them laughed. “I’m not the only one who ever snuck out, though,” he added pointedly.
“You are the only one who ever got caught,” she quipped. They continued to talk for what felt like hours, but in reality was maybe forty-five minutes. It felt nice to forget about their responsibilities for once and get carried away reminiscing on their childhood. Even if it did mean listening to Bianca bring up some of the more…embarrassing stories.
Like the time goofed around while swimming in the Arctic waters and almost drowned (“that was one time!”), or when he fell while hunting on the solid sea ice and almost broke his nose (“I tripped!”).
As it felt like their conversation was starting to wind down, Barnacles realized that he was feeling a lot better. He was still tired, yes, but talking and laughing with his sister, getting his mind off of everything that happened earlier, made him feel so much lighter.
He knew that he should probably be saying his goodbyes and going to sleep, but it was so rare these days that he and Bianca talked like this. What was a few more minutes?
~~~
That ‘few more minutes’ quickly turned into over another hour, but neither of the twins seemed to mind at all.
It was only when Barnacles started frequently yawning that Bianca asked him, “what time is it where you are?”
He checked the time and a shocked expression washed over his face, “it’s almost midnight,” he said. When he could help it, he was usually in bed much earlier than that.
Oh, he hoped Kwazii couldn’t hear their conversation. The poor cat was a light sleeper, and he hated being disturbed.
“You should get some sleep,” Bianca told him, surprised he didn’t hang up earlier. “What time do you have to get up?”
“About seven,” he rubbed his face and yawned again.
She gave him a disapproving look and shook her head, “get some sleep, Barnacles. We can talk again later.”
Knowing that she wasn’t budging on this, Barnacles gave in. The two said their goodbyes, and Barnacles hung up, dragging himself back over to his bed and, once again, dramatically collapsing onto it.
This time though, he pulled the cover over himself and quickly got comfortable. Without any more interruptions, it didn't take long at all for him to fall asleep.
In the Arctic, Bianca frowned slightly at the black screen of her tablet. She was uncomfortable with the silence that washed over her den now that her brother had hung up. She sighed quietly, looking down to her stomach and biting at her lip.
She hadn’t started to show yet, but she was positive, no pun intended, that once she did, it wouldn’t be long before everybody found out.
And Bianca wanted her brother to be the first one to know, so she had to tell him soon. She just couldn’t do it tonight, no matter how badly she wanted to. She could find enough patience to wait until he wasn’t utterly exhausted.
“Another time,” she told herself softly.
some notes:
final word count is 1,422
I hint at Bianca being pregnant with Orson and Ursa twice throughout this, and this is because the twins are still very young the first time we're introduced to them and it's Barnacles' first time meeting them, so I think he had to find out she was pregnant while he was on the Octopod
shifter au is inspired by its_in_the_water on AO3, I'm not sure if they are on Tumblr or not, but their works on AO3 are incredible and their shifter au is really cool, and you should definitely check them out if you haven't already
I'm also thinking about doing some drabbles, probably Kwazii-centered because that's what I have ideas about, but just shorter in general. I start my first year of college next week, and I know that school really drains my motivation to write, so I don't want to sign myself up for more really long fics and then not be able to follow through. But hey, I scheduled a lot of free time this semester so who knows what's gonna happen
I'm back with yet another Octonauts oneshot
This one was requested by the lovely @dolphingirl1234 , I hope you like it and thank you for the suggestion! I had a great time writing this, and I'm quite pleased with the results :)
shifter au***
“I think that was the last of it, Captain,” Dashi said, and Captain Barnacles lowered the manual steering pod back to the floor of HQ, letting the automatic steering system take over again.
It was horribly early in the morning, and the two of them had spent all night navigating the Octopod through heavy storms and rough waters. But it seemed like the worst of it was finally behind them.
Barnacles stretched his paws out in front of him and let out a sigh, “and it looks like everything is ship-shape.”
Dashi nodded and suppressed a yawn, trying to let go of the stress she’d been under tonight. She checked the time and shook her head, “it’s almost four.” They’d been monitoring the storms and driving for hours, and she was exhausted.
“You should get some rest,” Barnacles told her, walking up and setting his warm paw gently on her shoulder, “you woke up early yesterday and stayed up late tonight.”
She rubbed her eyes and finally yawned, “what about you?” She asked him.
“Don’t worry about me,” he smiled at her concern, patting her head lightly and stepping back to glance at their monitors, “off to bed now.”
Dashi didn’t need to be told twice. She pulled herself up from her chair and took the ladder down to the middle floor of the ship, indecision making her pause in the hall. She could take the Octo-Chute up to her and Peso’s pod and call it a night, or she could take the ladder down to the launch bay and pay Tweak a visit, assuming that the mechanic was awake. Tweak always knew how to make her feel better, and after the day she’d had, it sounded like a fantastic idea.
Banking on the fact that Tweak was probably up and working, Dashi chose to head down to the launch bay. Just in case Tweak was trying to sleep, she moved quietly and carefully, until she saw the bunny wide awake, sitting on the floor of her room and playing one of her video games, her tongue poking out in concentration.
When Tweak didn’t react to her walking in, Dashi prompted, “Tweak?”
The bunny paused her game and looked over to Dashi, frowning slightly, “hey Dash, a little early to be up, huh?”
“Says you,” Dashi said playfully, “I haven’t been to sleep yet anyway.”
“Workin’?” Tweak asked sympathetically, scooting over on the floor and inviting Dashi to join her.
Dashi plopped down next to her and nodded, sighing, “the Captain sent me to bed and took over in HQ, but I wanted to see you first,” she said, leaning her head down and resting on Tweak’s shoulder.
Tweak wrapped an arm loosely around her, frowning again, “how long’ve you been up?” She questioned, and Dashi sighed again.
“Too long to keep track.”
Using her free arm, Tweak reached up onto her bed and pulled down her carrot duvet, wrapping it around both of them and pulling Dashi a little closer, the dachshund quick to snuggle up to her. “Somethin’ else is botherin’ you,” Tweak guessed.
“You know me too well,” Dashi nodded, staring down at the floor and covering herself more with the duvet.
Tweak waited a moment before asking “do you wanna talk about it?”
“Not really,” Dashi answered after a moment of debating.
Tweak didn’t push her on it, letting the quiet take over again as she picked her controller back up and resumed her game, Dashi watching intently.
They sat in comfortable silence for a long time, Dashi enjoying watching Tweak play her game with the warmth from the bunny and her carrot-themed blanket. Eventually, she broke the silence by asking, “how was your day?”
Tweak didn’t expect the question, taking a second to formulate her answer, “pretty good, no GUP crashes or emergency repairs, I played some games with the Vegimals for a while and… not much else,” she hummed, glancing down to her, “you?”
Dashi found herself sighing once again, “I didn’t sleep well at all last night, so I was up really early, and then the Captain, Peso, Shellington and Kwazii went out on a mission and medical sweep at that reef, which meant I was up in HQ keeping an eye on everything. I got a quick lunch break, but they were still out, so it wasn’t really much of a break. I got some time off when they came home, but I wasn’t tired enough to sleep, and then I had to be back in HQ to activate the launch when we left, and then we got caught up in that huge storm,” she huddled closer to Tweak, feeling stressed all over again, “the Captain and I spent hours trying to get around it safely, I thought it’d never be over… And then he sent me to bed, and I came down here.”
Now that she had stopped talking, she realized that Tweak had paused her game again and was looking down at Dashi with mild concern, and Dashi sheepishly apologized for rambling.
“‘S alright Dash,” Tweak responded softly, “I’ve had my fair share of days like that. They’re not fun.”
Dashi went silent for a moment, trying to calm herself down, then she spoke again, “I’m homesick,” she whispered it like it was some horrible confession, her voice cracking, “I miss Australia… I miss Koshi, and I miss my parents. I feel like I haven’t seen them in ages. I mean, I talk on the phone with Koshi when I can, but it’s not the same, I really miss being home so bad, I’ve been meaning to visit but we never have time…”
Tweak set her controller down on the floor and pulled her into a tight hug. She understood being homesick all too well (she was sure just about everybody on the ship did, too). “Oh, it’s okay Dash…” she told her, rubbing her back soothingly. She hated seeing her upset like this.
Dashi couldn’t find the words to say anything else, but Tweak’s hug did make her feel a little better. “I’m sorry,” she said quietly after a few minutes, “this has been bothering me for a while now…”
“I understand, believe me, I do,” Tweak looked down at her, trying to think of something she could do to make Dashi feel better.
The bunny gave her a few minutes to calm down before asking, “hey, do you have any of those mystery books? Those um… oh, cabbage.” She could never remember the name.
“Donna Doxi?” Dashi filled in, finding herself smiling at the way Tweak cursed.
Tweak nodded, smiling too, “that’s the one.”
Dashi thought about it for a moment, “I have a few in my room, why?”
“I was thinkin’ maybe we could read some,” she proposed, loving the way Dashi’s face lit up.
“Really?” She asked excitedly, her tail wagging slightly under the blanket.
Tweak nodded. She had a feeling that the suggestion would cheer her up. She laughed when Dashi unwrapped herself from Tweak and the blanket and sprung up, heading for the ladder.
“I’ll be right back!” Dashi grinned.
Tweak, still smiling, turned off her game and put away the controller, picking up her carrot duvet and bringing it with her as she got onto her bed, sitting up and leaning against the wall while she waited for Dashi to come back.
It didn’t take the dachshund long at all to return, struggling to balance three or four of the mystery books in her arms as she climbed back down the ladder, her tail still wagging happily as she made her way back into Tweak’s room. “Okay, I brought a few different ones because I didn’t know which ones you were interested in,” she said, setting the books down and sitting on Tweak’s bed.
Tweak looked over the books. She didn’t really care which one they read or what it was about, to be fully honest. She just knew that they made Dashi happy, and that reading some of them together might be just the pick-me-up she needed. She selected one of the books at random and said “this one looks interestin’.”
Dashi beamed at her choice, “one of my favorites,” she commented, pushing the others aside and picking up the selected book, moving to lay in between Tweak’s legs, her head resting on the bunny’s chest, holding the book out in front of her so that they could both see it.
Tweak didn’t mind the proximity at all, covering them with the blanket once again and playing with Dashi’s hair as she read the book aloud. Truthfully, Tweak was only partially paying attention to the book. She had an idea brewing, one that would help with Dashi’s homesickness.
Sure, having Dashi read her favorite children’s mystery novels while they cuddled was a nice, sweet idea, but Tweak knew that she would still be homesick and sad when they were done. To be able to solve the problem rather than finding ways to ignore it, Tweak would need something more than a night of cuddles.
But there was nothing that could be done right now, so Tweak fleshed out the details of her plan, then she resumed listening to Dashi read.
The two of them stayed there like that for at least an hour, Tweak taking over and holding the book up for Dashi, and eventually reading too when she noticed Dashi was getting tired. After a total of three Donna Doxi books, Dashi was lulled to sleep, Tweak’s smooth voice and sweet Southern accent replacing her need for music. Tweak gently set the book down once Dashi finally fell asleep, allowing herself to get some shut-eye, too.
~~~
Tweak only ended up getting a few hours of sleep, but that was fine with her. At around eight in the morning, she slowly got out of bed, careful not to wake Dashi, and made her way up to HQ.
The Captain was still in there, keeping an eye on things, and he looked over to Tweak when the mechanic called “mornin’ Cap.”
“Good morning,” he replied with a small smile, exhausted from being up for so long (he kept saying that he would sleep later, but he never got around to it).
“I have a question,” she walked up to him, and when he prompted her to ask it, she said “do ya think we could take a trip somewhere?”
He tilted his head slightly and said, “I don’t see why not. Where did you have in mind?”
Tweak smiled brightly, “how about Australia?”

Another Octonauts oneshot, let's go
shifter au***
Peso sighed as he pulled off his latex gloves and threw them away, walking over to the sink and washing his hands.
It had been a horribly busy day for him, patients consistently coming in for treatment, and he had barely gotten a break. But now, it felt like things were finally slowing down. He dried his hands and then sat down, allowing himself to relax.
Medbay was finally quiet…
His relaxation was short-lived, though. Captain Barnacles appeared on the screen across the room, Dashi in the frame behind him.
“Peso? Come in Peso,” he called, and Peso pulled himself up with another sigh.
“Here, Captain.”
Barnacles could tell that he was tired, but there was nothing he could do about it at the moment. “We’re bringing in another patient, a great white shark pup. We’ll be at the Octopod in a few minutes.”
“Alright,” Peso said softly, waiting to hear more about the patient, but Barnacles hung up unexpectedly. He frowned, making his way down to the launch bay to meet them there.
Tweak greeted him as he hopped down from the ladder, noticing that he looked unusually tired. “What’re ya doin’?” She asked, her southern accent strong.
“Waiting on the Captain and Dashi,” he responded, clutching his medical bag and walking over to her. “He said they were bringing in another patient.”
Tweak nodded slightly, and a couple minutes of waiting later, Captain Barnacles was radioing her and telling her to open the Octo-hatch.
Peso straightened up as the GUP A surfaced, Barnacles opening the windscreen and hopping out, Dashi right behind him.
“Oh good, you’re here,” He said to Peso, “this is Max.”
Frowning, Peso looked around at the water around the GUP A, his eyes widening when he found the shark. “Oh, hello there,” he said.
“Max here,” Barnacles gestured to the small shark, “is sick with something, and we’re not sure what. We need you to find out what it is and help him get better.”
Peso nodded, smiling warmly at the nervous-looking shark, “alright then, just give me a moment to fill up the medbay tank, and I’ll see you up there,” he said, turning to make his way back up the ladder before he could see the look of confusion Max gave him.
Captain Barnacles smiled down at Max to calm him down and further explained what Peso had said. For a great white pup, he seemed really skittish, so Barnacles went the extra mile to try and keep him calm so they could help him.
Up in medbay again, Peso got the tank filled back up for Max and put a fresh pair of gloves on. A moment later, the small pup was swimming up, sort of hugging the wall and staying away from Peso. Max didn’t seem to like the change in location.
He lowered his voice a little and smiled sweetly, trying to reassure the small shark that he wasn’t going to hurt him. “What seems to be the problem, Max?”
“I don’t feel too good,” Max said with a sad expression, watching Peso as he took his stethoscope out of his medical bag and put part of it over his ears. He backed up further when Peso held the other part of the stethoscope out towards him. “What is that thing?” He questioned anxiously.
Peso glanced between Max and the stethoscope, smiling again, “this is my stethoscope. It lets me hear things like your heartbeat and breathing. It helps me figure out what’s wrong,” he explained, and when Max’s expression didn’t lighten up, he said “would you like to listen to my heartbeat?”
Curious, Max nodded and swam a little closer to the edge of the tank where Peso was. Peso gently slid the top part of the stethoscope over Max’s ear holes and explained further.
“These are called the earpieces, and this,” Peso lifted up the bottom part of it, “is called the chest piece.” He put the chest piece over his own chest and held back a small chuckle when Max reacted to his heartbeat.
“That’s cool!” He said when Peso took the instrument off of him. “Sorry I’m scared, I’ve never seen a medic before,” he told the penguin in front of him.
Peso put the stethoscope around his neck and picked up a clipboard with a chart so he could take notes, “that’s quite alright Max. I’d like to listen to your heart now, if that’s alright.”
~~~
Outside of medbay and down the hall, a small orange cat strutted away from the Octo-Chute he’d come out of.
Kwazii was in his natural form, planning on surprising Peso with his company. He hadn’t seen the medic all day, which meant that Peso had been really busy, and Kwazii wanted to spend some time with him. He’d already checked Peso’s pod, but he wasn’t there, so the little cat made his way to medbay.
Medbay’s doors opened when he walked up to them, and Kwazii snuck inside, his right eye squinting from the bright lights. Without his eyepatch, his sensitive eye was left exposed, so he tried to keep it shut to avoid the discomfort.
From his spot by the tank, Peso looked over to the doors and frowned, calling out “hello?” Receiving no response, he guessed that somebody had just walked by and accidentally triggered the doors, and he brought his focus back to Max.
Unnoticed, Kwazii hopped up onto the counter across the room from where Peso was and sat down on some papers, his orange and cream striped tail wrapping around his paws. From his spot on the counter, he watched Peso and-
Shiver me whiskers, is that a shark?
Kwazii tilted his head slightly as he watched Peso work with his patient, shifting on his paws for a while before he realized that Peso wasn’t going to notice him anytime soon.
Back over by the tank, Peso gave the timid shark a comforting smile as he held up an x-ray tablet. He explained what it was, then turned it around and held it in front of his own arm so that Max could see what it did.
“-and that right there is my bone,” he was saying, looking from the tablet to Max, “using this can help me figure out what’s making you feel bad by eliminating some options.”
Max had looked worried at first, but relaxed as Peso talked and demonstrated. “Okay,” he eventually said, letting Peso work.
Kwazii studied Peso as he treated the shark pup, making a mental note of how gentle and patient he was. That made him smile, but it wasn’t surprising. Peso was always like that with his patients.
After a while of doing more tests and examinations, Kwazii laid down on the counter, tucking his paws in and wrapping his tail along his side, forming the perfect loaf. He observed Peso for a little longer before it became hard to keep his eye open and his head up, and before he knew it, he was moving to lay down on his side, telling himself that Peso would only be a little longer and that he wouldn’t fall asleep…
Just when Peso was about to call Shellington in for help, he discovered what was making Max feel unwell.
There was a parasite on his gills, and Peso carefully removed it, explaining that there are certain fish in shallower waters that could remove parasites for him if he ever found himself with another one.
With Max feeling good as new, it was time for him to go back home. Peso gave him a sticker for being such a brave patient, then he drained the medbay tank, which took Max down to the launch bay. He radioed Tweak and told her that Max was ready to leave, and she said that she would let him out of the Octopod.
When Max was gone, Peso let out a sigh and took off his gloves, beginning to put away everything he’d gotten out. The Captain and Dashi hadn’t gone back out after they brought Max in, so he should be, finally, done for today.
And he was exhausted. He really didn’t even want to clean up medbay, but he did it anyway so it didn’t become a problem.
It was during the cleanup process that he discovered the small orange cat on the counter, curled up on his side, fast asleep. Peso did a quick visual check to make sure that nothing was wrong, and, upon seeing everything looked normal, smiled tiredly as he walked up to Kwazii. He reached out and petted him softly, following the curve of his back.
Kwazii stirred slowly and trilled, the sound a sweet mix between a purr and a meow, one eye opening to look up at Peso as he realized where he was and what he’d been doing. He couldn’t help but stay relaxed under Peso’s pets, and he started purring quietly.
Peso chuckled softly, “hey kitty,” he said, gently scratching behind one of his ears and watching as Kwazii leaned into his touch, “how long have you been in here?”
“Not long,” Kwazii replied, stretching out and purring louder when Peso’s other hand came up and petted his belly. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep,” he mumbled, closing his eye again.
Peso nodded slightly, making a slight face at all of the fur Kwazii shed when he petted him, “why’d you come in though? Usually you don’t like it here.”
“To see you, me hearty, you’ve been in here all day,” Kwazii leaned further into his touch.
“I had a lot of patients today,” Peso responded.
Kwazii opened his eye once more and looked over to the tank, “speaking of patients, where’d that shark go?”
“Max? He went back home,” Peso hummed, rubbing his thumb lightly over the “M” pattern on Kwazii’s forehead.
“Oh,” Kwazii said, turning his attention back to Peso, “you know matey, you did really good with him.”
Peso’s face lit up at the compliment, “thank you.”
The two of them stayed quiet for a while, Peso eventually pulling up a stool and sitting in front of the counter, and Kwazii standing up and headbutting his chin lightly, rubbing against his jaw and making Peso laugh softly.
After a while, Peso started yawning and having to make an effort to stay awake.
Seeing this, Kwazii spoke up, “why don’t we get you to bed, matey? You’ve had a long day.”
Peso frowned and looked around medbay, “but I haven’t finished cleaning up yet,” he tried, to which Kwazii shook his head.
“You can finish in the morning,” he said, “right now, you look a bit like you’re about to fall over. Come on, then.”
Reluctantly, Peso got up, letting himself be nudged out of medbay and led to his room by the little orange cat.
When they reached the Octo-Chute to his room, Peso looked down to Kwazii, “you can spend the night, if you’d like,” he offered, wanting his company after the day he'd had.
And who was Kwazii to turn him down? They rode the Octo-Chute up to his room together, and when they got inside, all Peso could do was kick off his boots and take off his hat before flopping down on his bed, his lamp still on from when he left that morning.
He patted the bed beside him, “come on up, kitty,” he called to Kwazii, smiling as the little cat jumped up on the bed and laid down at his side. Peso petted him softly once again, letting his body finally relax.
“Thank you Kwazii,” he spoke up after a few minutes, his eyes fluttering shut.
Kwazii only purred in response, kneading Peso’s blanket until the two of them drifted off.
some notes:
shifter au is inspired by its_in_the_water on AO3, I'm not sure if they are on Tumblr or not, but their works on AO3 are incredible and their shifter au is really cool, and you should definitely check them out if you haven't already
I used two episodes to determine the layout of medbay: the sea sponge, and the porcupine pufferfish. So if you need a reference, I recommend going check out the beginnings of both of those episodes
Kwazii's behavior towards Peso at the end is loosely inspired by the beginning of the episode the Jungle Ghost from Above and Beyond, in which Kwazii makes sure that Tweak gets some rest after a long day of hard work
