How to answer that question by asking another question
This is a great piece (indirectly) on the importance, appeal, and benefits of a "scholarly enclave" versus a "corporate city," along with a critique of secondary education in America today that is very accurate and insightful.  A must-read for all rising high school seniors and college freshmen.

Its customary for the incoming Student Senate President to write to the Dickinsonian with his vision for the upcoming year. My letter is below. Let me know what you think! Fellow Students: A few...
Everyone in the Dickinson community should take some time and read this Letter to the Editor from my good friend and Student Senate President Will Nelligan.  This makes me more proud than ever of the school I'm going to.  Best of luck, Will, you're going to do great things for Dickinson, like you have for the past 3 years already.

Textbooks, Packing, and Waiting
My textbooks finally came in! I have everything cluttered on the floor of my room, waiting to get packed in the car next week to move in!  After 9 months of waiting, it seems like this last week is really another month...can I just move in already, please?
In other news, we just bought my ticket to go meet my roommate at Penn Station in New York, welcome him to America, ride home on the train with him and get to know him! I'm so excited for this awesome experience to begin, and I can't believe it's so soon.

Last night, I Skyped with my roommate, Zhang Tiancheng, who's an international student from Tangshan, China! At first, I had no idea what to expect, but I could not be any more excited about my first semester at Dickinson now! The coolest part about the call was when, at the end, he said "good night" and I said "have a good day" because I was ready to go to bed and he was going to go eat lunch.  Although the call quality was sub-par because we were talking from totally opposite sides of the planet, I could definitely tell that we took the first steps in a really great relationship. I feel so lucky because I'll be able to learn so much about the world I haven't seen yet, and I'll be able to help him learn in the same way! If there was any way I could possibly have been any more excited about college before, there's definitely any way it could happen now.
Here's to a good year, chief.  It's gonna be awesome.

A Dickinson Man
                                              A Dickinson Man
                                          by Glenn Parsells, '80
A Dickinson Man...is, at the risk of cliche, quite simply a gentleman and a scholar.
A Dickinson Man...brings honor, dignity, life, and humor to all his endeavors.
A Dickinson Man...does not strive for high ideals; he simply embodies them, and has done so from the time of his birth.
A Dickinson Man...is never the life of the party; he simply knows that wherever and whenever he is, a party is sure to follow.
A Dickinson Man...when crossing the road, always looks first to his left, and then, grudgingly, to the right...politically, that is.
A Dickinson Man...when meeting a woman for the first time, appreciates that she little understands that her overwhelming, compelling interest in him is, inevitably and unavoidably, due to his being a Dickinson Man.
A Dickinson Man...is noble, kind, generous, and trustworthy, and he always pays his bills on time...well, maybe.
A Dickinson Man...never takes the time to write scholarly books; he figures, why spend so much time stating the obvious when you can think fresh new thoughts beyond those who do bother to take the time to write scholarly books?
A Dickinson Man...never thinks "outside the box," for he knows that only mere mortals assume there is a box there to begin with.
A Dickinson Man...when first visiting the Dickinson College campus, naturally falls in love with it, and he intuitively understands that he was born to be a Dickinson Man, and that filling out an application for acceptance is a mere formality.
A Dickinson Man...when offered the chance to enroll in Harvard, Yale, or Cornell, will simply smile, with a gleam in his eye and a sparkle on his teeth, and reply, "I have a more important covenant to keep, and a highly cherished destiny to fulfill, for
I am, have always been, and, God willing, will always be...A Dickinson Man.

This blog will chronicle my journey as a student at Dickinson College over the next four years.  To give a little background, I am a student in the Class of 2017 studying Sociology with a minor in Economics.  I am from Hershey, PA, and I applied Early Decision.  This is absolutely the school of my dreams, and I can't wait to get on campus on August 21st for Orientation!  Stay tuned as college shopping and more updates come!
