Craning his neck by just a few degrees to see past a group of men to note each of the large mahogany doors that lined the ballroom, Remus hoped desperately that the two appeared natural. Emmeline, who was much more accustomed to this sort of environment through similar family relations, appeared completely at ease, something that Remus was finding much more difficult.
The man was no stranger to lying; living outright as a werewolf wouldn’t get him very far, and so he had been forced to keep a great majority of his life a secret. He was used to putting on masks and faking pleasantries. However, no amount of practice could have prepared him for a party with the high pure-blood society. Behavior at events like these are taught and instilled in pure-blooded children often before they could even walk or talk. Glancing around the room of the elite, Remus knew that he couldn’t afford to relax or let down his guard for a minute.
“Alright.” He nodded with a careful smile in response to Emmeline’s notes, relaxing his shoulders and turning to look over her shoulder. People were still flooding in through the main door, and the crowd was only bound to grow as the evening went on. There was safety in numbers, and despite the risk in hanging around for an extended period of time, both knew that they were much more likely to go overlooked amidst a larger group of people.
Biting his lip as Emmeline spoke, Remus wanted to laugh at the reminders. However, the people around him didn’t exactly appear like people that laughed often, and so the man was quick to nod instead, wondering not for the first time that night if he was in way over his head. Attempting to pass a half-breed mutt for high pure-blood society was comical at best, though he decided it best to keep that joke to himself.
“Sure, arrogant and entitled.” He repeated, turning to face his “wife” with a coy smile, thankful to have her by his side. “I mean, all I’ve got to do is channel an overtired Sirius Black. How hard can it be?”
Dinner Party || Emmeline and Remus
Emmeline straightened out Remus’ dress robes, appearing like a fretful wife. In reality, she was giving him a chance to scope out the exits. The two had snuck in through the service entrance. She’d convinced the staff they were guests who had gotten stuck outside. She leaned in to whisper in Remus’ ear.
“Travers will most likely keeps his papers in his study. We’ll have to wait until there’s a bigger crowd to make our move.”
She pulled away, looking around at the guests. Thankfully, she didn’t spot anyone she knew. Most were elite purebloods, but her family didn’t run in the same circles as they did. At most, she’d seem a little familiar and they’d just assume she was someone they had met once.
It was hard to believe this may have been her life, had she not left home. There was a ring she’d borrowed on her finger and she was hanging on her “husband’s” arm. Admittedly, her “husband” was a lot more pleasant than Evan, even if she barely knew him.
She’d been chosen for this mission because she knew how to act the part. It was something she was trying to help Remus with. While it was all second nature to her, it apparently wasn’t for most people.
“Don’t forget, be arrogant. Look like you own the place. Also, most conversations will probably involve sharing as little as possible while still trying to win. If anyone asks, you’re a Fawley,” she said. “There are so many of those running around, they won’t even be suspicious.”
She then smiled at him, somewhat warmly.
“I think you’re prepared for your first party with high pureblood society. Nervous?”

Admittedly, Remus was surprised when the customer approached him to ask him if he was alright, versus for help looking for something. It was an odd kindness that most didn’t bother with these days, and it took him a moment to regain his composure before he quickly shook his head. “Oh, no- I’m fine. Just getting over a bit of a cold.” He lied with an easy smile directed at the kind stranger, an automatic habit now that had only grown worse over time.
“That’s very kind of you to offer, but I think I can manage just fine, thank you. It’s nothing, really.” He continued with a light nod, shifting the last of the books in his arms. They rarely ever got many customers in the store at this hour, and even then, most usually kept to themselves and the front of the shop, never bothering to venture back this far, making the stranger very curious in Remus’ mind. The company was pleasant, though, so he was far from complaining.
After a minute, however, he realized that this man was not a stranger at all. Remus had seen him before in the Wizarding World, hanging on the sidelines at the occasional Order meeting. He was married to Sirius’ cousin, Andromeda, if Remus wasn't mistaken. He had heard his best friend speak of the two from time to time, and seen his face in the couple of photographs that Sirius still had of his cousin. Of course, since Remus was young and new to the Order, quietly keeping to the back of the meetings more often than not, he didn’t expect the man to recognize him, least of all in a muggle bookshop, of all places.
“I’ve seen you before at a few Order meetings, I believe.” He began quietly, a precaution that seemed foolish, seeing as they were the only two in the small shop. “I’m a friend of Sirius’.” He continued with a reserved smile. “Remus Lupin.”

A Lack of Color || Remus & Ted
Ted had been lingering in the bookstore for quite a while now. Nymphadora had sent him away with the task to find a book about a pig and a duck. One with only a pig was easy, one with only a duck even easier, but one with the two animals united was much harder than Teddy had thought.
Mindlessly he was browsing through one of the many written stories when the cough killed the silence of the library. A cough usually was the sign of a disease and while other people probably had stayed away or even left the shop, Edward Tonks first instinct was to put the book back to its place and go searching for the noises source.
"You alright there?", Ted asked as he saw the other man. His eyes worriedly running over the male in front of him, before they checked the surrounding. "Quite dusty in here, isn’t it?", he spoke in an amused tone and pointed with a nod to one of the many shelves, "Are you allergic? To the dust? If you want to sit down for a moment I can be an exemplary customer and put away the mess others left?"

Which one of your best friends is the most attractive: James, Sirius, or Peter?
"By asking me to choose between James and Sirius in a competition of looks, I hope you realize that you're putting me in a very difficult position that's bound to get me into a great deal of trouble."
"Instead, I'll save myself the pain and give this one to Pete. He's easily the sexiest of the bunch, regardless."
