    “aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?” of course the words were accompanied by a cheeky grin, and a gentle bump to the shoulder. with three older brothers, she’d gotten used to banter pretty early on — it was sort of a requirement. it always felt easy with ben, for upper class as both of their families were, he felt more in tune with her than most of the kids she’d known back then. “got fed up of all your northern mates then? should i be flattered, or have you just come down here for the nightlife?”

GRIN   SPREADS   ACROSS   HIS   LIPS   AS   HE   BOUNDS   UP   TO   HER  ,     tugging   her  into   a   half   embrace    ;    arm   wrapping   around   her   shoulder  .    “  oh  you  flatter  me  ,   eloise   .  ”     he   TEASES  ,    laugh   easily   falling   from   his   lips   as   he   takes   her   in   for   a   moment   .   it   feels   like   years   since   he’s   last   seen   her  ,   even   though   it’s   only   been   a   few   months  .    he’s   always   found   it   DIFFICULT   to   be   far   from   her   for   long  ,   though  .       “  shut   up  !  ”     he   says  ,     shoving   her   slightly   as   he   laughs   again  ,   wide   eyes   shifting   to   take   in   the   area   around   them  .      “   i   doubt   you   swots   even   know   what   a   club   is  !   but   no  ,   i   have   rather   unfortunately   come   here   for   you  ,   so   if   you   start   causing   me   trouble  ,   i   will   be   on   the   next   train   home  .    so   come   on   then  ,    what’s   new  ?   have   you   gotten   in   TROUBLE   for   all   your   debates   yet  ?   found   a   partner  ,   maybe  ...  ?  ”

    that actually managed to elicit a laugh, albeit one of surprise. it wasn’t like she knew much about ben, but she’d not expected him to say such a thing. most men were either interested in finding a docile, submissive wife, who would meet his needs, come with a decent dowry, and continue the family name…or they were trying to please their family, appease their pushy mamas. he seemed different, though she hadn’t expected him to be. although he was closer than she expected, and sticking to her side, he seemed genuine enough.  to say she seemed real, that he was interested in speaking to those who spoke their mind? well, he certainly wouldn’t meet many women like that around the ton. a few others, perhaps, and lady whistledown herself, but that was about it. “why ever would i take offense? forgive me for my candour, lord solo, but i dare say most ladies of the ton are not nearly direct enough. they are afraid of speaking their minds, or perhaps too afraid of actually using them. you truly like to see a woman speaking their mind? most people find me far too direct. i have been told, on more than one occasion, that is not very becoming of a lady.”

HER   LAUGH   HAS   HIM   GRINNING   ,       relieved   that   they’ve   managed   to   make   it   past   the   initial   awkwardness  .    it’s   been   so   LONG   since   he’s   been   able   to   find   someone   like   her   to   be   around  .    someone   who   was   true   to   themselves  ,   over   the   ACT   the   world   wanted   them   to   put   on  .     and   its   already   setting   him   at   ease  .   laughing   in   turn  ,   his   head   SHAKES  ,   nothing   but   clear   delight   on   his   features  .    “  you   needn’t   ask   for   forgiveness  .  ”    he   says  .     “  you’re   quite   right  .    i   will   admit  ,   i   do   feel   awful   for   them  ,   since   i   know   they’re   all   stuck   in   such   a   difficult   place  .    but   i   simply   cannot   STAND   how   fake   it   all   is  .  i   mean  ,   how   am   i   supposed   to   know   if   i   want   to   marry   anyone   if   if   i   can’t   ever   learn   about   who   they   truly   are  ?    or   how   they   actually   feel   about   things  ...  ?  ”     it’s   never   made   any   sense   to   him  .     “  quite   honestly  ,   miss   bridgerton  ,   if   they   say   that   its   not   becoming   of   a   lady  ,    then   i   say   that   it   isn’t   WORTH   trying   to   become   one   in   the   first   place  .    i   know   most   have   no   choice   at   present  ...   but   there   must   be   something   that   can   be   done   to   make   it   so   they   have   one  .    we   can’t   go   on   like   this   forever  .  ”
