I did not got over Manaphy either, I would cry whenever I remember those scenes. It got kinda better when my dad got me a Manaphy plushy for El Dia de los Reyes Magos, but I still cried when he gave it to me.
Aw, anon, that’s adorable.
If I had one, I’d probably hug and rock it and cry over it too.
Honestly, Haruka’s whole plotline with Manaphy was just. So unexpectedly emotional? I knew it’d imprint on her, but I didn’t expect the levels they’d go with it. She’d rock it to calm it down, okay, it’d love her like a little baby, okay, but it doesn’t use telepathy…

It’s starting to learn human speech. It sounds like a little babbling baby, then a two year old. It mistakes an oft-repeated word for her name and calls her by it “Kamo!”/”Happy!”
And then, then, when we had that scene in the hammock where she tries to teach it to say “I love you.”
And that’s it, I was gone from there on out. It was so tender and sweet and motherly and then, there was them swimming together and later, finding out he has to leave because he’s the prince of the sea and she can’t keep him forever and she’s trying not to break down and he doesn’t understand why she left, so he’s just splashing up on the suface of the water “Kamo! Kamo!”/“Happy! Happy!” with her bandana AND UGH.

Their final scene together, where she has to say goodbye, is just so beautifully rendered– the lighting, the colours, the expressions, the way the wind blows her hair, Manaphy’s mouth as it sounds out the words (”Haruka - suki”/”love you, May”) and finally calls her by name. ;3; (I really loved the dub having Manaphy call her mama too, though, that packed a punch).

… the last conversation, where her brother asks her if she’s alright and she answers honestly is one of the most genuinely emotional exchanges and one of my favourite scenes in the whole series:

Whose writing decision was it that we put Haruka through motherhood from birth (or, er, well, hatching of a sort) to leaving home all in one movie, that’s what I want to know.
the piece i drew for Illumination: a Lumine Ship Anthology, in collaboration with the amazing chell_min on AO3, who wrote a fun fic that accompanies this!
