Wish rewrite ✨ pt.2
This is the second part of my rewrite of "Wish." The first part can be found here.
Admittedly, this was the trickiest section to write because the middle parts of stories aren't my strong suit. Still, I persevered and managed to get everything together. Enjoy :)
Introduction to Star: One of the stars shines big and bright, momentarily covering all of Rosas in a warm glow. The people are in awe and so are Magnifico and Amaya… but for different reasons. Like in the movie, the star suddenly shoots down past Asha and into the forest and she runs after it. She catches up with it and sees it transform into a young man. This is Star. He’s energetic, inquisitive, peppy, and (at first) doesn’t have much sense of personal space. He’s mute, too, only communicating through body language and images created with his star dust. He can also levitate. After realizing she’s not dreaming (“Oh, I see! I tripped and hit my head as I was leaving the house. I’m dreaming! Okay, okay. I’ll just pinch myself awake.” *pinches her arm* “Ow!” *sees that Star is still there* “Oh no…”) and introducing herself to him, she learns two things: 1) he’s here to help her grant her wish, and 2) he’s a young star and by helping her, he will advance into a proper wishing star. A moment like what's shown in this piece of concept art also happens as part of Star's way of explaining his purpose. Throughout the scene, he showcases what his magic is capable of by making objects - mainly plants - grow, changing the colours of flowers and other things he sees, and of course, shape-shifting.
Tumblr media
Magnifico and Amaya in distress: The royal couple are still reeling from the bright light, Magnifico more than Amaya. He rambles about how such a phenomenon may be a bad omen for them. Amaya asks what he means and he refers to a great danger that the royals before him left warnings about; how such a danger could lead to their downfall. Amaya, while concerned, calms her husband and reminds him of his power. If anything happens, his magic can easily stop it. "Besides, my love, all of Rosas adores you. Who would dare try to defy you?"
Asha and Star in town: Asha and Star are about to enter the town. He’s ready to stroll in, but Asha (humorously) pulls him back and tells him they need to keep a low profile. So he alters his appearance to make himself look more human. While Asha is preoccupied with figuring out what to do about saving Rosas, Star is preoccupied with everything around him. The people, the food, everyday objects, everything. Asha repeatedly tries in vain to get him to focus. They eventually run into Dahlia and when she asks who Star is, Asha names him Orion and says that he was part of the group of recent newcomers. ("He was at the wishing ceremony." "I don't remember seeing him-." "Hewassittingintheback.") (from this point onward, whenever Star is in his human disguise, I'll refer to him as Orion/Star) Shortly after, she sees her mom and grandfather selling fruit and asks Dahlia to keep an eye on Orion/Star ("What is he, a puppy?" "Well, he doesn't stay still, so kind of."). Asha reconciles with them and even though they still don't believe her claims from the previous night, at least all is forgiven. (Sabino: "It's all water under the bridge." Sakina: "As long as there won't be any more cross words about the king and queen." Asha: "...right.") Orion/Star suddenly sees Dario (one of the townsfolk Asha interacted with earlier) trip and rushes over to catch him before he falls. He learns about the man's wish and through body language (and a covert use of star dust), Orion/Star suggests how he could go about making it come true himself. Dario is taken aback by this. Making a wish come true without Magnifico's magic? Is that possible? Nonetheless, he is delighted at the potential. Orion/Star notices the positive change in Dario's mood and he gets an idea: they can show the townsfolk that they don't need Magnifico to make their wishes come true. After Asha returns and Dahlia leaves for the bakery, he explains this concept to her. She is skeptical at first ("We can't make everyone's wishes come true. What if someone wants to fly? What if someone wants to be 8 feet tall?"), but recognizes that it would indeed rob the king and queen of their control. She agrees to the plan.
“Montage” song: Asha and Orion/Star work together to help the townspeople (not everyone, like Asha said, but still many) take steps towards fulfilling their wishes with the right tools and inspiration. He even does a bit of shapeshifting when no one is looking, much to the amusement - and slight panic - of Asha. Dahlia and Dario help the duo out sometimes. Simon watches all of this unfold with apprehension. During this, we not only see that Orion/Star is living with Asha's family for the time being but also that Asha's cynical disposition is melting away. Star's influence is beginning to rub off on her, even if only a little, and Rosas' atmosphere is starting to change. Similarly, he's influenced by Asha's even-tempered nature and he starts dialing back his impulsivity. The two of them are growing closer as well (a sweet moment like this definitely happens), even sneaking glances at each other. The best way to imagine this sequence is a combo of "Strangers Like Me," "We Don't Talk About Bruno," and "Make a Man Out of You." It consists of an assortment of characters singing and talking, plus it takes place over the course of a few days.
Wish disappearances: Magnifico and Amaya notice the change in Rosas, too. They can't put their finger on why until they notice something else: there are less wish bubbles than there were before! And as they speak, another one suddenly evaporates! How could this be? Magnifico reiterates that the bright light really was a bad omen. The great danger is truly upon them. Amaya acknowledges the severity of the situation, but is still there to bring him back down to Earth. Clearly, there is a traitor in the kingdom and all they have to do is find them. Magnifico concurs, but can't shake the feeling that there's more to it than that.
Asha opens up: Asha sits by the fountain observing the impact her and Orion/Star have had on everyone. It warms her heart. She sees Orion/Star helping an old lady (who resembles one of the three fairies from "Sleeping Beauty") with her wish and smiles. But the sight of the castle pulls her out of this happiness. He eventually sits beside her and relishes in what they've accomplished. Asha reminds him they're nowhere near done, not as long as Magnifico and Amaya are still in power. Her demeanour perplexes him and he notices her fiddling with her silver bracelet. It's here she reveals that the bracelet was the last birthday gift from her dad before he passed away. Moreover, we learn that her lack of hope stems from being let down again and again throughout her life. Her family's wishes were never granted, her dad died, Rosas loses more of its luster with each passing year because of how tired everyone is... it became too much for her. "[Papa] always said that hope gives you strength, but for me it brought so much pain. So by expecting and accepting the worst, it hurts less when the inevitable happens." This makes Orion/Star visibly distraught; she's in more pain than he could've ever imagined. Asha quickly shakes it off and tells him that if they're going to actually save Rosas, they need evidence of the royals' wrongdoings and there's only one way to do that.

Wish rewrite ✨ pt.1
Everyone and their grandma has done a rewrite of "Wish," but I couldn't help myself. I've seen the concept art and have watched an array of video essays dissecting what went wrong with the final product and my imagination went wild (as it often does with movies that had so much potential yet failed to deliver).
Full disclosure: I'm not a songwriter nor am I an expert on music theory, so when it comes to the songs in this rewrite, I'm just gonna give a general idea of what they're about and what happens.
With that out of the way, let's get into part 1 of my own "Wish" rewrite! And I'm in no way proclaiming this to be the superior version; I'm just sharing what I came up with like a lot of you have. I've also included a visual of my Asha redesign, which I hope you like. <3
(Also tagging @annymation :) )
-
First and foremost, I'm torn between this version either being completely 2D-animated or just Star (specifically in his normal magical form) and his magic being the only things 2D-animated. You can envision it however you like.
Book prologue: Like the movie, this opens with a storybook. However, it's in live-action. A narrator (perhaps a Disney Legend, like Mary Costa, Kathryn Beaumont, etc.) tells the backstory of how Rosas became a literal magical place:
“Once upon a time, there was a small island kingdom called Rosas. Surrounded by crystal waters and nestled beneath an endless sky. One day, the king gathered his subjects to make an important announcement: through magic, he had found a way to grant wishes! And since then, the people looked to their magnificent king to make their deepest desires come true.
This magic was passed down to the royals that followed, and in this time, the people continued their undying devotion to their extraordinary leaders.
Over the years, boats came from far and wide, carrying those who wanted to see this magic up close, as well as those who sought to live in Rosas. And our story begins with the docking of one of these boats…”
Introduction to Asha/Rosas; “Welcome to Rosas”: A group of newcomers excitedly wait to enter Rosas and this is where we meet Asha. "One... two... three," she mumbles - as if preparing for a performance - before stepping out in front of the group. Bubbly and all smiles, she introduces herself as their tour guide and ushers them into the kingdom. This version of “Welcome to Rosas” not only explains the rules of the kingdom regarding wishes (giving wishes at age 18 [it's mandatory], how the wishing ceremony plays out, only one wish is granted each month due to the large amount of magic needed, etc.) but it also highlights how hardworking and dutiful the citizens are. Additionally, it mentions that Rosas was once a land in disarray, but the magic of wish-granting led them to prosperity. While there’s an upbeat tone to the song, there is an almost sinister undertone that’s lost on the newcomers (and to us, the audience, if we don’t pay too much attention). I should quickly point out that people don't forget their wishes after giving them to Magnifico like they do in the movie. They just no longer have the motivation to pursue their wishes themselves.

Design note: Asha is the only person in Rosas wearing orange, thereby making her stand out from the largely blue, purple, and grey colour palette (much like how Belle is the only person in her village wearing blue). click the image to see more outfit details
Meeting Dahlia and other townspeople: After Asha leaves the group to let them enjoy the sights, her bubbly persona immediately disappears and her true nature is revealed. Levelheaded, composed, a touch cynical. A realist. This personality is shown as she interacts with some of the townsfolk (moreover, this scene alludes to what some of them have wished for). She takes a bag of fruit to Dahlia, her best friend and a talented baker. She’s cheerful, idealistic, and tends to stumble over her words when excited or stressed (a nod to Doc from “Snow White” along with her character design). Like the rest of Rosas, she thinks highly of the king and queen. In exchange for the fruit, Dahlia presents Asha with a birthday cake for her grandfather. This scene showcases Dahlia’s desire to become the castle baker someday and that she thinks her work needs to be perfect to get that position (even though her work is already amazing). We are also introduced to Simon, who comes by to pick up an order for delivery. He’s a few years older than Asha and Dahlia and is already showing the same level of exhaustion as most of the other adults. He wants his wish granted so badly that he’s willing to work hard and impress the king and queen no matter what. He's secretive about what his wish is.
"Welcome to Rosas (reprise)": As Asha walks home with the cake in a box, she looks at the citizens around her. This time, we’re seeing life in Rosas through her eyes rather than those of the awestruck newcomers. “Welcome to Rosas (reprise)” brings to the forefront how exhausting, unfair, and almost cult-like (i.e. the people’s intense adoration of the king and queen) everything is, while also insinuating the crux of Asha’s personal journey: she doesn’t have hope.
Meeting Sakina and Sabino: Asha arrives home to find Sabino asleep in a chair by the window. She smiles at him; a big, loving smile. Up until now, her smiles have either been small, fake (for her job), or just smirks. She gently wakes him up and he tells her he was dreaming about one of his artworks coming to life. “In a few hours, it may actually happen,” he says with a hopeful grin. She bites her tongue so as not to bring his cheerful mood down with a "Let's be realistic" comment. Soon after, Sakina enters the house carrying a basket of fresh fruit and looking tired. Asha takes the basket from her, fussing over how exhausted she looks. ("Mama, you shouldn't be doing all this work by yourself!") Sakina says that she’s fine, but Asha’s worries aren’t placated. Eventually, the trio sit down to enjoy the cake. Sakina laments the absence of Asha’s father, which prompts Asha to fiddle with her silver bracelet.
Wishing ceremony: We finally see King Magnifico and Queen Amaya in all their glory. They are regal, stunning, and tower over the people of Rosas in more ways than one. Still, when 18-year-olds and new residents approach the king on stage to give their wishes to him, he presents himself as an affable man. The cultish vibes that have so far been subtle are made much more apparent in this scene, complete with chanting, cheering, and bowing in a way that demonstrates complete submission. Sabino and Sakina wait with bated breath to see whose wish will be granted, while Asha remains less optimistic. She holds her grandfather’s hand reassuringly when the announcement is made. It’s not him. While not nearly as surprised or devastated as Sabino is, his disappointed reaction still breaks Asha’s heart. So much so that it encourages her to do something drastic.
Asha learns the truth: Sakina and Sabino head home while Asha makes her way to the castle entrance. She overhears the guards tell other people that the king and queen aren’t seeing anyone right now and reinforcing a specific rule: “commoners aren’t allowed in the palace.” Not to be deterred, Asha finds another way in. She’s distracted from her objective of ambushing the king and queen by the sight of the castle’s interior. It’s beautiful; unlike anything she’s ever seen. It's as if it were made of crystals, like the waters surrounding their island. Reflective surfaces are adorned on almost every section of the walls. Curiousity gets the better of her and she ascends the staircase to the highest room in the building. After brief hesitation, she enters and finds that it’s the room that houses the wishes (the general look of this room is about the same as how it is in the movie). Her wonderment is interrupted by the sound of Magnifico and Amaya outside. Thinking quickly, she hides in the balcony running along the upper part of the room. It’s here that she witnesses something horrifying: Magnifico taking a couple of the wishes in his hands and crushing them. This is how he gets his powers. He and Amaya laugh at how these people will be waiting forever for their wishes to be granted. ("They will work themselves to death, never knowing that their wishes, their dreams, will never come true.") Furthermore, Asha learns that Magnifico is already very powerful and doesn't need a whole month to garner enough energy to grant a single wish. After the couple leave, Asha sneaks back out.
Warning Sakina and Sabino: Asha rushes home and tells Sakina and Sabino about what she saw. Obviously they don’t believe her and an argument ensues. They can’t understand why she’d speak ill of the king and queen, and she’s trying so hard to plead her case. At one point, she accidentally hurts Sabino’s feelings by saying that realistically speaking, the odds of his wish being granted are slim to none. She feels awful about what she said and she tries one last time to convince them. Sakina gently but firmly tells her to stop and “When you’re older, you’ll understand.” Asha is left stunned and alone as Sakina tends to a tired and upset Sabino. Overwhelmed, she leaves the house and runs into the woods. She's trying so hard not to break down.
“This Wish”: This version of the song, much like in the movie, sees Asha wish for a way to help Rosas. However, it also conveys her internal struggle of letting herself feel some semblance of hope for the first time in a long time. She initially pulls back and scoffs at the idea of wishing on a star or even believing that things in Rosas will change, but as the song goes on, she caves into what her heart is telling her as opposed to what her head is telling her. It’s worth noting that each time she considers wishing on a star, it’s instigated by her looking at her bracelet. Akin to “Part of Your World,” after so much build-up, the song ends on a soft but powerful note where Asha finally wishes on a star (she still has serious doubts, but there's a sliver of cautious optimism shining through).

Wish Movie Identifying the Music Instrumentals
🌟 :)
I rewatched the deleted scenes and wanted to identify which music they used for them. They were used for the official film, too. These instrumentals can be found under the official Wish playlist on Spotify or Apple Music.
Btw have a little clip of the storyboard to “This Wish”.
• To Rosas Deleted Scene - “Guide Away!” | “The Plan In Action” | “Wish End Credits Score Suite” | “A Wish Returns” | “Everything The Light Touches” | “Wish End Credits Score Suite” (it continues)
• Magnifico’s Secret Deleted Scene - “The Corruption of a King” | “The Plan In Action” | “Consulting The Spellbook”
• Valentino Is A Star - “Sir Simon” | “Wish End Credits Score Suite” | “Magnifico’s Rise”
• The Wishing Tree Deleted Scene - “Wish End Credits Score Suite” | “We Did It!” | “Dinner Table” | “A Wish Returns”
• Finding Flazino Deleted Scene - “Everything The Light Touches” | “The Teens’ Question” | “Wish Granting Ceremony” | “A Wish Returns” | “A Disappointing Truth” | “The Journey Calls” | “A Promise And A Decision” | “Wish End Credits Score Suite”
That last one was a little tricky. Also, something that I noticed in “We Did It!”, when you go to timestamp 0:46 to 1:10(ish) it sounds like the song “A Wish Worth Making”! 💖

I listened to this in the car the other day and couldn’t help but think of Star proclaiming his love to Asha in this way, calling her “his universe” is so corny yet so sweet, which is Star’s personality.
“God Only Knows” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” both fit into the “Star in love” section of this.
“As long as there are stars above you, you never need to doubt it. I’ll make you so sure about it. God only knows what I’d be without you.” As long as Asha can see the stars above her, Star will always be with her. And if not for Asha’s wish who knows where Star would have ended up.
Wouldn’t it be nice fits more if Star does have to leave and them preparing for the eventuality of their departure from Asha and wishing that they could have more time together.
Hello fellow Wish rewriters! I have a question for yall
What song reminds you the most of your Star Boys?
This song always gets me thinking about Aster:
More specifically, I think of the stars above singing to him, but I’m curious if you guys have songs that make you think of your star boys, please share!

There’s this concept for a story I’ve been replaying in my mind and I just want to put it out there.
In the distant future, a new rule is implicated for married couples. Once married, the couple now has 5 years to help a single person get married or risk nullification of their marriage. If no close friend or family member is available, a couple can apply to a single assistance program and get assigned a random single.
The main story revolves around three people, the main couple and their adopted single.
The single is NOT your usual single loser nor are they this model looking person, they are an average person with a steady job, good prospects and nice family life, they just haven’t had any success in the dating world. The single has NEVER been in a relationship before. The single is in their mid to late twenties with the couple being mid to early thirties so the age gap is not to steep.
The conflict involves the single looking for their match as they are a hopeless romantic and the couple trying to help the single navigate the dating scene, adjusting the singles expectations of a relationship while also taking a deep look at issues within their own relationship all the while the clock ticks closer and closer to nullifying their marriage.
In the end, each character is in a better place than where they started.
I want this story to be about learning to be happy and enjoy what you have instead of pining for this perfect scenario that just is not reasonably possible. And to show how relationships aren’t this magical be all end all thing, they take time and work to make.
It’s probably not a new message but it’s one that should be told

The Missed Potential of WISH
It’s funny.
Last year, I really wanted to watch the new Wish animated film from Disney.
Tumblr media
While everyone else were hating on the art and animation style, I actually kind of liked it and was genuinely looking forward to possibly viewing it on the big screen.
Tumblr media
Then the reviews came in. Needless to say, I didn’t watch Wish.
Tumblr media
I remember a time when people used to complain about Disney making “too many love stories”. Then Disney stopped making love stories leading to films like Moana, Coco, Encanto and even Turning Red, which weren't bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following the failure of Wish, the biggest complaint I’ve heard for that film is that “it probably would’ve been more successful if it were a love story”.
The last romance Disney had we’re the protagonist was a “black girl” was Tiana from The Princess and the Frog which was technically their last 2D animated feature film.
Tumblr media
And don’t get me wrong, til this day, The Princess and the Frog still tracks. Second to Tangled, I still very much love TPATF and it's one of Disney's classics that definitely have the rewatchability.
Tumblr media
That being said, Wish is the first Disney film I've seen where the missed potential of what its story was originally supposed to be (herego a love story between a human girl and shape-shifting star boy) versus what we actually got is more popular.
Tumblr media
Aww Disney, what were you thinking?! How could you think a film where the main character, who is a PoC, the first "black girl" (well technically I think Asha is meant to be mixed) female lead/love interest that you've had since Tiana in The Princess and the Frog in 14 YEARS where she is actually human for all of the movie and gets to share a love story with a handsome "star boy" who can literally make all of her dreams come and think that that's NOT gonna make you money!
I haven't even watched Wish yet I've seen more artwork and fan-made animatics of Asha and Star Boy than anything from the actual film.
At this point, Disney should just take all of the original ideas they left on the chopping block for Wish and revise them into a future title which is an actual love story they could market from.
Or…as an audience, we can just wait for one of their competitors, like Dreamworks to smell the blood in the water like the sharks they are and capitalize on Disney’s latest flop by taking the ideas they didn’t use and coming up with something that could potentially usurp the popularity of Wish’s failure.
In the case of Dreamworks, they don’t even need to make a new star boy since, technically, they already have potential “star boy” they can use.
Remember Rise of the Guardians?
Tumblr media
Hahaaaaa OF COURSE you do, since it gave us the original immortal boy internet heart throb (also ironically voiced by Chris Pine who played King Magnifico in Wish) ---Jack Frost.
Tumblr media
I find it hilarious that another reason why folks are hating on Wish so much is because Disney could've given us another potential immortal boy heart throb "Star Boy" to finally usurp the chokehold that Jack Frost has had on our generation of weebs and artists for the past 12 years since RoTG first dropped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We could've had it all.
But as I mentioned Rise of the Guardians, did you know that there is character in the original series it was based off of called Nightlight?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While technically not a “star boy”, Nightlight is the closest thing to one in an already established universe from a Dreamworks property and since this squiggle meister never misses a beat to push for continuation of Rise of Guardians, hear me out:
Imagine a Rise of the Guardian prequel-sequel about the character Nightlight and make it a love story.
Tumblr media
(Because apparently there's a girl that Nightlight grows close to in his story called Katherine. It's just a friendship but needless to say, there is potential there).
I know it’s been 12 years since Rise of Guardians first dropped and I know I've be hollering for a sequel since 2012.
But c'mon, if there was ever a time for Dreamworks to capitalize on an RoTG sequel, it's now.
As Wish has proven, the internet is hungry for another handsome immortal boy with magical powers.
Dreamworks set the ball rolling with Jack Frost.
If Dreamworks were to revisit RoTG again, take Nightlight's story. Take his design and give him the "Jack Frost" treatment and make it a love story on top of that.
I'm not saying it will happen. Not even saying it could happen.
But if somehow thought becomes reality and something like this does actually happen, whoever does it will be rolling in dough.
This is just a longwinded way of me to say that somebody needs to bank on the concept of a star falling in love with a human and do it now since as the internet has shown, it's what the people want and what Wish failed to give.
