Court of the Sunflower King

The Court of the Sunflower King was a flash fiction story written by Keith Mclahlan. This piece of literature talks about romance, fantasy and at some point horror. It narrated the story of a king who always looked forward to a specific day every year which belongs to midsummer because of love for his wife whom he can only see once a year.

The story started when the Sunflower King expressed loneliness on his throne because of an empty seat of his wife. He described his court to be in despair and looked dull all through out the year except on the appearance of his wife named Queen Cereus. She was a Sidhe princess who had been curse to be seen once, but would disappear forever if she learned about the curse and this is one thing that the king wanted to avoid.

However, the situation was in reverse. It’s not the curse that he can’t tell, but the reality that he can’t move on. The truth was the King was already dead and the only day the wife could see him was every All-Hallow’s Eve.

Then, the King realized that on the day of their wedding day on Midsummer, a wicked witch appeared on their midst where he defended his wife causing his death.

In this literary piece, the characteristics of emergent literature was presented by the author through this time of technological advancement in a way of online collaboration. It belongs to the collection stories posted in a blog by the author itself. It also includes unconventional technique specifically audio record of telling the story. This literature may have a fictionalize idea, though it deals with unexpired theme and issues about love.

The beauty of love, symbolism of sunflower and its sorrowful revelation to the readers were the appealing features of this story.

The sunflower that grows in season shows the significance of waiting to find satisfaction. The story also shows how a certain person was willing to disregard the troubles and sacrifice for the sake of true love. Additionally, it uses the symbolism of sunflower for the loyalty of the king which gives a big impact to the people for the reason that despite any circumstances one’s love must be consistent even after death. Thus, moving on and letting go was given priority in order to achieve peace and harmony that will lead to happiness.

Upon reading this piece of literature, I’ve realized that people can live in fantasy, but at some point we must accept the truth and never deny the reality in life. It is somehow a key that let us grow and be braver enough to face more trials. Truth maybe painful and a fearful idea for, it could shattered our expectations into pieces, though it gives an chance to learn over time.

"People leave for good, but love becomes our endless connection."

This story also taught me that moving forward doesn’t mean being selfish and inconsiderate, it means leading us to a greater opportunity to become stronger and a better person.

THE LITTLE PRINCE

The Little Prince is a novella written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery that revolves around the journey of a little prince across universe narrated by a grown-up pilot man whom the little prince encountered in the Earth. The story started about the narrator’s memory of a six-year old child who have been criticized because of his drawings. This leads him to conclude the qualities that a grown-up person must possess, not until he met the little prince who gave him realizations in life.

When the narrator’s plane crashed-down into a desert, it opened to a chance on meeting the small boy whom he called “little prince”. This little boy let him remembered the passion for drawing he had long forgotten when the little prince requested to draw him a sheep. The two spend time together in the desert for days wherein the little boy gradually shared his experiences in life. The narrator then, concluded that the extraordinary little person of his accompany came from one of the asteroids across universe, probably called Asteroid B-612. It was a small planet in a way that baobab trees don’t have the opportunity to grow bigger as their to protect their planet.

On the fifth day, the secret of the little prince’s life began to unfold as he expresses his admiration and confusion towards an exceptional flower, whom he loved with all his heart. However, in some instances, the flower suddenly tormented him with her vanity. The feeling of unhappiness motivates him to a decision to leave his home and the flower in order to discover the world outside wishing to find happiness.

He traveled to a series of seven asteroids inhabited with different people with various perceptions. The first of those is ruled by a king who had a magnificent air of authority, but has no subjects before him. The second planet was inhabited by a conceited man , who only demanded praises from him. The third planet was occupied by a drunkard, who drinks alcohols to forget his shameful act of drinking. The fourth planet belonged to a businessman, who acclaimed to own the stars for the reason that no one dared to own it before him. In the fifth planet and smallest of all, he met a diligent lamplighter that’s so dedicated to his terrible profession of lighting on and putting the lamp off every minute. In the sixth planet, he have known a geographer who was never been an explorer. Hence, only referred his knowledge and study based on the confessions of the travelers who came to him.

The last planet he visited was the Earth. The place that encompasses and multiplies the quantity of the people whom he met from the previous planets. The first creature he met and talked in the place is a snake who proclaim to have a power to bring him back home. Next, he discovered the rose flowers that looked exactly of his own flower at home. However, a fox appeared that taught him the significant bond that he and his flower had and the responsibility he must fulfill to a rose that he tamed and took care for a long time.

One last evening, the little prince decided to return home through letting the poisonous snake he met before bite him. It was such a shocking situation for the narrator, but the prince had clearly explained the happening. He bid his goodbye to his human friend , emphasizing his existence in one of the stars for the narrator to remember him. On the next morning, the little prince’s body had gone missing that serves as a proof for the narrator to believe that his little friend finally return to his planet and he was hopeful for the moment to meet him again if anyone ever see him.

This popular literature work does not only have the purpose to entertain the readers, but it has the characteristics that also endured in a long time since it was published in 1943. It gives a long lasting impact in the culture and imagination of people over the years. According to research, this work was recognized as one of the most selling books of all time. This has been also adapted into various media over the decades such as, audio recordings, movie musicals, stage, screen, ballet, opera, and an animated series.

Up until now, 150 million copies of The Little Prince has been sold, and it has been translated into 250 different languages.

“For those who understands life, figures are a matter of indifference.”

The appealing features of this work was its sense of morality that the author wanted to covey to the readers and it’s common terminologies that are misunderstood. This story indirectly described differences in different aspects of life. There were types of people and places we never expected but always possible. It also showed the prerequisite truth between people in different stages of human development. It was that “ Children should always show great forbearance toward grown people.” However, the child’s mind is still developing which is one thing that adults must understand. Criticisms with regard to their developing skills was inappropriate for, it affects their lives and decisions in the future. Children always bear the innocence that continuously wanders as they discovered new things. The story also features the importance of small things that unexpectedly had a large impact and this was shown by the little prince itself. He shows the room for open-mindedness and development that everyone deserves rather than an egocentric side.

The story also focuses on describing the meaning of beauty beneath the surface that often lack of appreciation due to an attitude of being a narrow-minded. People tend judge the physical appearance of anything instead of critically thinking it’s deeper meaning and the efforts it contained. It also shows the beauty and complexity of love that only few would understand fully amidst of trials and insanities.

The story were maybe unbelievable in the aspect of its fictional characteristics, though it encompasses lessons and realistic qualities among humans and the world itself. Grown-ups referred their opinions in line with the society and this pushed them to generalize things and building an irrational perspective. They’ve become blinded by the temporary happiness given by the external advantages like wealth and power instead of appreciating the most important thing, the role of love in true happiness.

As what the little prince said, “ The thing that is important is the thing that is not seen”.

"WHY MEN LOVE BITCHES? "

CHAPTER 11: "THE NEW AND IMPROVED BITCH"

The New and Improved Bitch is one of the chapters in a book titled, “Why Men Love Bitches” by Sherry Argov that serves as a relationship guide for women who are too nice. Being a new and improved bitch is not a bad thing for, it’s a refined version of an old bitch. Bitch in this chapter is defined as a woman that doesn’t live up to anyone’s standards and not of forcing herself to become someone, she’s not comfortable with. According to some, BITCH derives from the first letters in the following phrase: "Babe In Total Control of Herself." There are four characteristics being described in this portion referring to what really is a bitch.

First, a bitch stands on her ground. She is straightforward and will never be a bystander. She makes her idea clear without hesitation and pleasing anybody, but living what she has to be and these following qualities gain the respect from men.

Second, a bitch is never fully conquered. Instead of losing her mind for a failed relationship, she makes the man lose his. She shows the need of her existence to a man and not the other way around. This is because of the basic difference between men and women. Women want safety and predictability while men long for excitement, danger and unpredictability. The more a woman keeps a level head, the more men become intrigued with her for, it will keep him pursue things that excites or difficult for him. The bitch is brave enough to conquer any situation and raise the idea of unpredictability. She is realistic and practical unlike to a nice girl, who is a coward of seeing things according to her desire.

In reality, men want someone who follows him. However, this practice in fact leads men to instantaneously get tired. The moment he believes than her woman is always considerate in everything he will do, it lowers his curiosity and excitement in a relationship.

Third, a bitch is defined from within. She is an independent woman. A person that never let others dictate her life rather, she let herself grow and drive towards her desirable destination. Defining oneself in this chapter means knowing the value and being true of what a person wants to pursue by not letting others taking any control. A bitch maybe soft and feminine, but most of all she has dignity. She’s not easily manipulated and doesn’t allow others define her whole self. Being an independent thinker added to the attractions for men that draws them like a “magic spell”.

Lastly, a new and improved bitch has a strong will and faith for herself. She understands the principle in adult day-today life and this include possessing self-confidence that motivates others to do the same. She believes on herself despite any distractions and discouragements from others and she focuses more on her goal and aspirations. This is for the reason in which she knows that insecure people will only succeed on treating and making her feel less only if she allows it. Abrasiveness is not an objective because a bitch is also strong yet nice. Nevertheless, she also demands same kindness in return that she deserves.

The specific chapter of this contemporary prose writing is basing from reality raises new terminologies that gives rise to controversy. It includes defining the significant role of women, the new bitches in a relationship which will definitely lead into showing justice of changing the unfair treatment and perspective of other people towards women. It also reflects the unvocal viewpoint of men towards women, which are unseen but undeniable if to dig deeper. The content itself does not only speaks presently in a way that it’s in the queue of the current issues within the society with regards to a failed relationship, nonetheless it presents possibilities to this issue that contributes on finding its solution.

Ethel Merman said, “ Always give them the old fire. Even when you feel like a squashed cake of ice.”

In this chapter, it’s also filled with different scenarios and pieces of advice that has the purpose in making women stronger, independent and self-empowered, which are the appealing features in this section. It shows dignity towards the new role of women citing the possible effects to highlight the characteristics that a new bitch must contain in an intolerable situation of a relationship. This portion of the book focuses and encourages women to firm and practical in a world full of injustices. This gives an idea for them and a starting point to grow in a new and improved way rather than living in a automatic relationship preference and expectations of people from them.

Before reading the chapter, I've found this piece of literature ridiculous in some part for the bitch word itself in the title and the concluding attitude of men in a relationship because it may not be applicable to all. People as we are, we all have differences and perspective in life, and this book may not be applicable to all. However, upon reading its content specifically this chapter, it brings a big impact to a woman’s life just like me. I’ve always believed that pleasing the partner in a relationship is the best option to save it from falling apart. I thought being considerate and changing oneself are ways to gain the respect from them. In response, it’s the other way around because it will just worsen the situation making the relationship toxic. It just open a room for me to make myself inferior and less as a woman.

Therefore, I realized that there’s a perfect shoe for every person and just like what the author stated in the Attraction Principle 100, “The most attractive quality of all is dignity."

ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN EMERGING LITERATURE

In the emergence and advancement of technology, the introduction and integration in the field of literature also occurred bringing changes and challenges into its traditional form. These includes the movements of modernism that started n early 20th century, which desires for new creation as a reflection to the emerging industrial world. Modernist writers adhered the new ways of expressing sensibilities through Ezra Pound’s maxim “to make it new”. This new styles greatly affects the poetic creation of the time that leads the modernist to achieve freedom from the traditional monopoly of writing form and content.

However, various perspectives contradict its advantages that resulted to a series of cultural shocks due to the common idea which are experimentation and individualism. In contrast to the Romantic view, modernist cares less for nature, being or the overarching structures of history. This gives different perceptions to others whether it’s a way for progress and growth or an impersonal and antagonistic to the artistic impulse.

Another issue that arise was the use of evolving digital or cyber technologies in literature. In a positive way, it provides tons of advantages to the writers and readers, though it also became a challenging part for others. Digital literature is defined as work of creation that are exclusively on and for digital devices wherein writers relies on cyber medium like website, blogs, or social media pages. These digital medias serves as a medium of information dissemination, but it can also be a tool for cyberbully. In terms of literature, it’s an opportunity for the variety of reasons such as, easy and wide accessibility, virtual interaction between readers and authors, and less consumption to time to find information.

On the other hand, the presence of cyber media is changing the perception of readers towards reading methods and influencing their reading behavior. Thus, the emergence of cyber literature encourages the access of literature as the mode of expression. In spite of that, for some educators who teach literature in the digital world, it’s challenging as it requires educational innovation such as, conducting role- based online discussion on cyber literary works using literary blogs with reader-writer interactivity.

Other issues in the emerging literature is one of the categorized genre called Science Fiction. Similar to the previous challenges discussed, this challenge has beneficiary effects for, it does not only stimulate imagination and creativity, but also develop analytical, memory and mental skills through factual information. This genre uses theories of science in the story that gives speculation about life with the involvement of technological change. The effects of the awareness learned from the current and developing technologies also helps to address long- term problems like global warming. At the same time, it serves as a preparation for problems that people don’t anticipate.

However, science fiction places demands on readers as well as the writers. Readers needs to think and concentrate unlike reading other genre like Romance while writers must be researchers because one of it’s purposes is to make readers educated and elevated within an entertainment context. Consequently, all the challenges mentioned above has its pros and cons that people needs to deal and cope up with due to the emerging technological advancement in the world. Nevertheless, these issues improve the lives of the people in any particular way.
