honestly and this may just be me being shallow but they would not do bi buck of buddie was not in the cards just my opinion. Especially now that we got Eddie’s catholic guilt storyline which screams he’s gonna go through his own queer awakening just seems obvious to me that buddie is absolutely in the cards never mind the insane press tour that’s been happening since the beginning of the season and everting that’s been revealed from seasons past. If Buddie was not in the cards all that stuff they revealed wouldn’t see the light of day but they want you to know this stuff to know what’s coming. And of course Buck and Eddie are not going to get together right away, Eddie’s the prize(another shallow thing to say I know) but Buck and Eddie are not going to immediately get together. It’s inevitable that they will get together in my opinion but that won’t happen till maybe the end of s8 and there’s lots of story to tell between then.

Tommy’s down that hall somewhere, and he got hurt at his job which is dangerous, and Buck is wondering how awful it would be to flee back through all the hallways and out of Pasadena to parts of the city he knows better, and go and find a nice safe girl with a nice safe job so his chest won’t ever feel like this. Or, only feel like this sometimes, with Eddie or Hen and Chimney and Bobby, or Maddie, people who he’s already seen bleed so he knows they can do it.

Honestly? This is the thing that drives me so crazy about 911/FOX/everything that's going on/gone on behind the scenes because Eddie's response to Buck being dead/hooked up to tubes is exactly what it would have been like if they were canon. Sure, we might have gotten a scene or two of Eddie at his bedside holding his hand, or kissing his forehead before he leaves. Maybe Eddie would have shown up in his dream to help him get back. But the rest of it? Eddie not being able to look at Buck because the sight of him being very Not Buck hurt too much? Eddie not even being able to speak because he was so overwhelmed by grief and fear? Christopher at Buck's bedside begging him to come back to them? These are all textbook spousal/familial responses to your husband/father dying or being dead, and it's just like...

You can't do this. You can't build a marriage between these two characters and then no-homo it at the last minute, because the homo has already well and truly been done. They haven't kissed. They haven't initiated a physical relationship on screen, but everything else is still there. The love is still there. The devotion is still there. The gentleness is still there. The adoration is still there. The family is still there. It's all still there. So, what? What have you accomplished by not having them go canon except make it difficult for a bunch of gif makers to make cheeky how we started / how it's going gifsets? You know?

All this to say, everything would have looked exactly the same. And that's on Buck and Eddie being in love in canon.
