Dehumanization As A Weapon of Mass Destruction, in “District 9”
The portrayal of Black People in film has historically been problematic, but the misrepresentation of Nigerian people in “District 9” was gross misconduct on the part of the creators. Creative outlets are often seen as harmless entertainment. Yet in reality, films like this are life threatening. Let me breakdown why…
In “District 9,” Nigerian characters were by and large considered to be dangerous weapons dealers, thugs, and prostitutes. There was even depiction of Nigerians engaging in sexual intercourse with the large alien like prawns. The depiction of these people was dehumanizing and animalistic. The Nigerian, as the disgusting beast is comparable to the worst scum of the Earth in this film. Dangers arise when films like this are seen by masses of people from varying life paths. The perception of Black People is left up to the interpretation of an audience that could already hold biases or create new ones simply based on this films portrayal. Dehumanization is a tool of violence commonly used to subjugate a minority population. The dehumanization of Nigerian people in this film further reinforces the narrative that Black People are not people at all, we are animals.
So, who actually watches these movies? Imagine a young non-Black child who has had limited contact with Black People for any ridiculous reason  sits down and watches this film without adult supervision. (Because what adult would allow a child to watch this filth). Now, this idea of what a black person is is either stained in the child’s mind or at least very subtly lingers in their subconscious. The child will most likely hold on to these biases as they grow older and share them with their families and friends. Subsequently, this narrative will permeate through the ages.
Even worse, imagine if a rookie non-Black police officer from a well-to-do neighborhood that has had limited experience working and living amongst Black People sat down and watched this film with some of his friends. This picture now has influenced their conscious and subconscious on what Black People are and how they behave. So, when this bias stained police officer has to make a traffic stop in his well-to-do neighborhood and the driver is a Black male, the way in which he treats the citizen could be fatal.
Black People made up a quarter of the murders committed by law enforcement in 2018. Of those people 23% of them were male. Black People make up 13% of the nationwide population, yet make up around 38% of the prison population. The only rhyme or reason I could come up with as an explanation for these disparities is fear. The fear that is created by media outlets and reinforced by society daily has created a fear that has been used as a weapon of mass destruction against Black People, and “District 9” has helped forward that story line.

Hey Code Switchers, “Sorry To Bother You,” but YOU ARE NOT ALONE
In the movie, “Sorry To Bother You,” code switching was used as mechanism of comic relief. But is it really funny that “sounding white” is the way in which Cassius Green attained upward social mobility? It actually kinda is, if you look at it as our own little secret weapon used to protect our culture.
In the beginning of “Sorry To Bother You,” Cassius was having an extremely difficult time reaching his revenue goals when he used his “Black voice,” but once he gained access to his best “white voice,” he made it to the top of the company. Code switching in the work place is a pretty common phenomena within the Black American experience. We go into our jobs, with our straight wigs, our proper grammar, uncomfortably dressed in our business casual attire in order to make ourselves more marketable and bookable. But is that really who we are? Because I know that under that Brazilian wavy lace-front you look just like me, Sis. I also know that the moment we leave our workplace we drive away blasting Kodak Black, answer our best friends FaceTime calls like “BITCH,” and the wig is retired to the dresser.
Code switching also plays a huge role in dating. Cassius’ relationship with his girlfriend Detroit, went through some pretty tumultuous peaks and valleys, but Detroit was always a place in which he felt comfortable turning his work voice off. Though I am a notorious interracial dater, I have realized that a problem point within my interracial relationships has been my inability to feel completely comfortable code switching in front of my mate. When I date Black men I can call him bae or boo or zadddddy. I don’t have to explain what a bae or boo or zaddddddy is, and in that I find solace. It speaks volumes that we feel most comfortable when we are able to code switch with our romantic partners.
In essence, we get to lead two different lives. The humor in the ability to lead two different lives lies within the comfort we embrace and value when we get to drop the “Hello, name is Laisce,” and get to pick up the “Sissssss”. Because we are surrounded by co-workers and bosses from 9a-5p and we should really get an academy award for this act were putting on, but the joke is really on them because the moment we leave we crank up Marvin Gaye on our drive home. They don’t get that part of us. WE GET THAT PART OF US.

"The Space Traders,” When White Folks Tell You How They Really Feel
Ok, wypipo. Tell us how you really feel. Watching the Afrofuturistic short “The Space Traders,” by Derrick Bell brings a combination of lighthearted humor and very salient questions. What would y'all do with us? If Aliens came to the United States today, with 45 as our president and the current overall nationwide political and racial climate, would power-holding United States officials actually consider holding a vote to determine if they would get rid of us? More importantly, would y'all tiki torch holding radicals vote us off of the island?  This short film speaks volumes to the idea that black people as a minority population could quite possibly be so disposable that if foreign entities offered a healthy environment in return for all of their melanated people, the anti-black and pro-environment population could quite possibly see value in making this deal. The trade of HUMAN BEINGS for goods or services is immoral… isn't it? As the history of the United States follows it is not outside of the volition of our fellow non-melanated folk to make that trade.
Another very interesting perspective offered in this short film was the story line following the Black Republican. Watching this mans struggle of teetering between being a textbook Uncle Tom House n-word and the daunting reality that Massa might be getting rid of him soon was absolutely comical. CAN’T RELATE KING, SORRY! He seemed as if he was surprised that his White Republican colleagues would sell him out. WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? To them we are a commodity, we have been a commodity since they stole us. No surprises here, lol. The Black Republican plight has many similarities and nuances to the White Plight, or the White Mans Burden. We can not sympathize. As a Black Republican in his position he has historically ostracized and undermined Black people in the struggle for freedom. So now your king is trading you off to aliens and keeping your fair complected wife… and you want us to feel bad? Life’s best lessons are its hardest lessons, and he most definitely found out the hard way. He took a very strategic and astute concept to the Black Church, and of course it fell upon deaf ears… YOU WASN’T WIT US SHOOTIN IN THE GYM!
It is more than okay to be a Black Republican, because we most definitely need allies in all forums. However, never forget who is REALLY on your team… and that is fellow Black freedom fighters. Because when them wypipo hold a poll to decide whether or not to vote you off the island… your Black ass will be the first to go! :)

My 2019 Earthseed Community, inspired by Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower
Two real-life issues that would make it necessary for me to create an Earthseed community within todays climate would be police brutality against black people, and disproportionate incarceration of minorities. In essence, we are seeking shelter from acts of violence, physical and systematic, committed against black people by the governmental power structure.
“All that you touch You Change.
All that you Change Changes you.
The only lasting truth Is Change
God Is Change.” -(Parable of the Sower 3)
I would use this verse to encourage my community that our current condition is not our permanent condition and that the power to Change our condition lies within us.
“A gift of God May sear unready fingers.” -(Parable of the Sower 7)
I would use this verse to explain to my community that in order to be blessed with the freedom that we have been struggling so long for, we need to work on strengthening and building our community from within. If we do not strengthen our community once we reach our goal, we will squander it.
In best interests of the movement, there would be no physical community, but an underground network of supporters that span the United States. This would allow the community to have access to many supporters nationwide and would strengthen the movement.
Anyone who supports the movement can join. Regardless of color, intersectionality would be a dynamic aspect in a strong resistance against the power structure.
There will not be a leadership structure. We will run our network as a collective.
Each member of the community will have a Community Alert System, that will alert all members and allies if they are in an unsafe situation with police or government officials. This alert system will allow members and allies to activate and use resources to protect the member in danger.
Our community will survive by having members and allies in places of power and within the structure. This will offer our at-risk members access to resources in the case of an emergency.
My community will also offer access to jobs to all of its members in order to reinforce the economic structure of our community. We would also have our own schools that empower our young members and teach life skills in collusion with the countries current education system.

i can’t take the word “weiner” seriously because it just reminds me of the weimar republic, germany’s failed attempt at a democratic government in 1919 whose hyperinflation and unemployment rates set the stage for hitler’s rise to power

Thanklessly Free
I love sleeping with the window open... Because the breeze is so natural and free... Free in the sense tht I will never have to pay... To lay here. To love it. To feel it. To breath it... Free from societies shackles I envy the breeze... I envy freedom... To roam the world with no calculated direction... To touch the cheeks, eyes, noses, & souls... Of someone new every second To sneak in the windows of the broken hearted... For a slight second reminding them ... That baby.. You are alive You are alive, If your pillow is soaked in tears Your nights soaked in sorrow Your days blend together Your time may seem borrowed... But baby... You are alive & remember, the breeze reminded you of it. -Laisce ©
