I don’t love bomb them. I write their evaluations with love because they’re great people who deserve to have their boss recognize them for their talents. Both verbally and through compensation. I don’t tell them I love them or cross any kind of professional line. It was a reference to passion. I work with engineers who are all incredibly skilled. They’re innovative. They need an environment that fosters freedom and creativity.
I care and foster the growth of people under me. If this company isn’t for them then they should leave and take a better opportunity and I support them.
I’m not doing it to keep them or not give them raises. I do it because they’re people and we’re in our careers. They’re spending years here growing and developing. They should enjoy their job because they spend 40 hours a week here so I invest time to see what their goals are. While giving them as much money as I can.
I’ve been tirelessly fighting to get the base of our workforce more recognition for how important they are. They pay for the unbillable VPs and up. They deserve proper compensation. If a level above me doesn’t want to hear it then I keep going up.
You don’t get to tell me what kind of person I am
Lmfao y’all are associating me with the corporation that I work for. No I don’t care about them or their profits. I’m not over here saying I love my employees and treating them like shit. Y’all are really wild and detached. This isn’t a sexual or romantic post. This is associating the passion that people write in love letters and using it to hype their employees up during the one time a year employees receive feedback. I’m not holding them down or abusing my position. Wtf is wrong with y’all. Stop putting your trauma that you’ve related on my post and trying to interpret it in your way.
Also people who think love is abusive or creepy, that’s not normal. Most of the love we receive is platonic. Stop making everything sexual.

You’re misinterpreting this
Employee evaluations shouldn’t be regarded as a nuisance, that tells the employee that you don’t care about them.
I write my evaluations like a desperate love letter. Like this is the last chance I have to keep you. I want you to cry and feel appreciated. I want you to know what you mean to the team and how your contributions have caused the company success. I want you to know that you’re worth it. I want you to know that without you, I couldn’t be me, as your boss. Essentially, thank you and I love you.
That’s how you do an evaluation.

You think I wrote this and you’re giving me the profound idea of giving them more money??
As if I didn’t not experience the same thing but now have the power to make it better
People who don’t like praise are often neglected. They believe that going above and beyond is expected and that it’s not worth praise. It’s embarrassing and doesn’t mean shit at the end of the day because we don’t need others approval.
But it’s good to get both sides. I’m going to give you as high of a raise as I can and tell you that you’re doing a good job.
Employee evaluations shouldn’t be regarded as a nuisance, that tells the employee that you don’t care about them.

Documentation. Unfortunately my philosophy is there’s no bad employees. I take who people consider a lost cause and develop them into the employees they want to be and are capable of being. If I see an employee that isn’t doing well, my first thought is that they haven’t had the right training or maybe need more help than you may realize.
If you’re really having an employee that’s fucking up then you have to document it, they have to know that they aren’t meeting expectations. Most companies have HR departments that give guidelines on how to document, and enforce an improvement plan. You also have to document your expectations as a manager. If everything is hearsay then that employee will always get the benefit of the doubt.
Employee evaluations shouldn’t be regarded as a nuisance, that tells the employee that you don’t care about them.

Engineers are obsessed with they “why” and sometimes it’s not given and they go crazy. I asked why in my calculus class in high school and after my math teacher spent an hour on what “e” is, I decided that I’m not doing that again. I learned that I don’t need to know why every time and that small change has lead me through a lot of success at my job. I learn the what and then the why as time passes and now I don’t hold myself back because I don’t know why something is being done.

I am in control of how others make me feel
I am in control of my own emotions
It is not my responsibility to make those I’m around better people
If I am unhappy in my environment then I can either change it or move on
I refuse to suffer because I am only punishing myself
If I refuse to make another better then I must move on

I work in the power industry and often have to enter private property to survey poles and equipment. When I train new engineers something I teach them is people are often on their guard when we enter a property.
Rich people think we’re there to rob them and poor people think we’re there to turn their power off.
My engineers taught me that being a black man who walks into private property without permission is target practice. As a white woman, I don’t come off as a threat so approaching someone’s house is not frightening to me.
I’ve taught them that it’s dangerous to field alone because I’m subject to harm at all times from men. I often share my stories of harassment and it shocks them.
They taught me that a customer calling the police doesn’t put minority employees at an advantage even though they’re in compliance with their job. Police are a danger to them.
I cried for them. I told my employees that there’s no job, project, person that is above their own life. If they feel unsafe, they leave. They call me. I’ll defend them. I’ll show up. I’ll be mean because I can safely. I have the power to do so.
This shit doesn’t just apply to the internet. Protect your people. There’s nothing more important than the people who work under you. Fight for them. Protect them.
Most of all, leave people alone that are working. Every time we walk up to a door we fear for our safety. Be kind but be vigilant. People who are legit will explain things, give contact information. Don’t assume calling a 1-800 number will validate all the work going on at a major company. Most utilities contract out engineering, construction, and project management. I will wait for the police to show up because I’m within my right to access my easement. If someone is willing to go to that extent, they’re legit. Don’t harass them. We’re just trying to do our job. We don’t give a fuck what you’re doing or have going on because we’re not the law.
