I would have liked to chat with everyone on January 1st In my usual cheerful state, but I’m honestly so shocked that something like this happened.

The fact that it happened in my hometown honestly still doesn’t feel real yet The alarm was ringing last night and this morning even though we are in Kaga City, which is far from the Noto Peninsula.

It’s still shaking a little, and we can’t really relax. I’m praying for everyone’s safety. And, everyone, thank you for your kind comments.

Many of you have expressed concern, so today I will talk about the situation as I see it.

I was already at my parents' house on 1 January. I went straight back home after the year-end concert on 31 January, so I spent the beginning of the year at my parents' house.

On 1 January, my family dressed me in a kimono I took a video in a Japanese-style room wth my dear family member Kabu-chan and greeted “Happy New Year!”.

I uploaded the video as soon as I took it, so I had no idea that such a huge earthquake would come right at that timing.

Also, it was the first time seeing my family in a long while So we did some early new year’s shopping.

The place I went was around the prefectural border between Ishikawa and Toyama. It wasn't that close to the epicenter. We’d continued to shop nearby, but we were able to safely return home the same day.

The moment we left the store when we were finished shopping was when the big earthquake hit. We were in the parking lot at the time and it’s New Year’s so of course there were a lot of cars around

The cars shook unbelieveably. Even the snowplow was making a lot of noise and shaking. The ground was shaking and moving like waves it felt like such a long time.

It was difficult to keep standing, and of course I felt dizzy.

Fortunately, it didn’t shake terribly in the shops around us so there was no major damage, but at the shopping mall that I had just been in only a few minutes ago Apparently the ceiling collapsed and water had leaked inside…

I really came to realise how different the situation can be by the difference of a few minutes.

I was so scared We immediately returned home to Kaga city Somehow, there were no road closures or blocks so we were able to return home safely

Later when I was watching the news I saw road closures due to cracks, unlevelled ground and so on… Once again, I realized that the damage had been severe.

There was no major damage in my family home. There was a glass ornament on top of the piano I was relieved it was the only thing broken

But talking to my acquaintances it seems there are also a lot of people who’s homes got really messed up.

Even after we’d gotten home, the alarm was ringing Kaga City was also still shaking quite a bit We were really in a state of unrest.

I kept waking in the night because of the shaking, on repeat.

I’m sure you’ve all seen on the news there was also a huge fire in Noto.

I’ve mentioned before in blogs and magazines, but my father works in the lacquerware trade.

Wajima, where the fire occurred, is famous for its Wajima lacquerware. He seemed to have a lot of acquaintances there.

There was a fire at the morning market, and there are many lacquerware companies and workshops in that area. Apparently those people were affected by the fire. It looks like some people had their workplaces and homes burnt down.

To see people we know become victims like this it’s so painful to see the situtation, how can I put it… it’s like my heart is hurting.

At the end of last year, these people who had gathered around a TV to watch the Japan Record Awards to support me to have something like this happen to them it’s really painful.

I’ve been to some of those stores myself, too I ate a seafood bowl there, and strolled around the market. I heard that the place where I ate that seafood bowl was also burnt down

I can’t find the words other than my heart is seriously hurting.

If I could, I would love to rush to Noto right away and bring relief supplies, but the road is currently closed, and I can’t get there. As for what I can do right now I would like to stand on the stage and look forward after all so I decided that tomorrow I will take the stage for live performances.

Of course, separating from my family is very worrying.

On SNS there have been comments and so on saying not to force myself to perform or push myself too hard. Thank you so much for your kindness.

We made the decision based on that so I would appreciate it if you could understand my feelings.

I caused a lot of people to worry about me so I feel that showing myself with a smile and with energy would be the best way forward.

In this era, you can use SNS to say anything you want but after all, it’s hard to convey what you want to say with just words.

In any case, for now I wanted to tell you my feelings and the situation so I wrote this blog post.

I pray that the damage will not get any worse.

Yonemura Kirara (OCHA NORMA) - VoCE Interview

Beauty magazine VoCE interviews Yonemura Kirara of OCHA NORMA on makeup, her days in the Hello! Project Kenshuusei, and working towards debut.

── Which member do you want to exchange makeup bags with?

K: Kitahara Momo-chan. She has a lot of pink cosmetics, and many things that are cute and girly! If we exchanged, I think you'd see a me you haven't seen before with a lot of pink. But actually, the truth is I already borrow a lot of her stuff without much thought now anyway (laughs). Next time I want to properly trade with her.

── What kind of makeup do you usually do for yourself?

K: For work, my eyeshadow is always brown. It makes the area around my eyes look deeper, and I feel like that makes me look cuter and overall better aesthetically. When it's my free time, I don't particularly need to look cute (laughs), so I do my makeup how I like, like winged eyeliner or pink eyeshadow. Sometimes I feel like just doing the makeup that I like for work too, like using the pink eyeshadow, but when I look at the videos and photos afterwards I think "this doesn't look good" and regret it... so basically I always end up back to brown!

── What kind of makeup is essential for live performances?

K: I love using glitter. When I go to a cosmetics department I always check out all the glitters, and I buy them right away. The area around my eyelids is so small, so honestly there's probably a lot more makeup I need to buy (laughs). I love big glitter that looks holographic! When the light shines on me, it reflects the glitter and sparkles and I think that looks really cute. I do sometimes worry how it looks from a male perspective, but I don't think much about that and apply it anyway!

── What do you think your personality is like, according to you?

K: I'm really unrefined. If I'm somewhere that I'm familiar with then I'll sit with my legs wide open, or I'll open and close a door really loudly. But when it's my first time somewhere I tend to freeze up out of nervousness, like today at the beginning I was actually really nervous. So I also think I'm a bit of a chicken.

── Yonemura-san, before OCHA NORMA made their debut, you spent 6 years as a Hello! Project trainee ("kenshuusei"). What kind of existence to you are the other 3 members who walked that road with you in the H!P KSS Unit?

K: When we were working as part of the Hello! Project Kenshuusei Unit, we had the effects of the Coronavirus happening around us, and we were always anxious about whether we would really be able to debut at all, or if we were to debut, what kind of debut that would look like. We had no idea what to aim for, so the four of us continued worrying and searching for some kind of answer, and there were days where we couldn't help our mood being down. There was actually a time that we got scolded by a teacher who told us, "The Kenshuusei Unit brings down the mood of the stage when you perform, so you don't have to perform anymore". There were a lot of painful times, and Hello! Project also has an image of people getting their debuts in elementary or middle school, so there was also an impatience with my age that made me think, "I can't keep going like this". The reason that I carried on without giving up despite all of that is definitely because I was always with the three of them! Of course if we were going to continue we would be together, but we also decided that if we were going to quit, we would quit together as well, so I felt like those three members were always my allies, and we had a special connection as a community of fate who had been struggling and fighting together.

── When you were in the KSS Unit, and you couldn't see your debut coming, was there anything the four of you did to keep up your motivation?

K: When we performed at events, we performed with the determination to turn the guests who were there into our own fans. For example, one thing we tried to be conscious of was making a lot of eye contact with audience members. Of course, we were also polishing our performances, but we also studied up on makeup and did our makeup together, and did strength training in the dressing rooms... We also put in a lot of effort to up our visual appeal.

── You don't always show a lot of what you're feeling on your face, but when you debut was announced, it left an impression on everyone that even you cried. What were your feelings at that time?

K: I had been aiming all this time to debut, so of course it was "happiness", but there was also a huge sense of relief, because my family, friends, and the members I had spent such a long time with had all been supporting me the whole time, and now I was finally going to debut properly. I think my situation had uneasy for a long time, and I caused a lot of worry for the people around me, so I was filled with a lot of gratitude.

Tashiro Sumire (OCHA NORMA) - VOCE Interview

Beauty magazine VoCE interviews Tashiro Sumire of OCHA NORMA on becoming a Hello! Project idol, her audition, and her feelings since joining. Original article found here.

── Which members would you like to exchange makeup bags with?

S: Hiromoto Ruri-chan. Ruri-chan is knowledgeable about cosmetics, and she often carries makeup from brands I've been interested in, as well as cute products from brands I haven't heard of. She's also great with her hands and is good at doing makeup and hair arrangement, so she sometimes does my braids or half twintails for me!

── What is your personality like, if you analyse yourself?

S: My weak points are shyness and negativity. With all the experiences I have every day, I tend to reflect on things with regret about "I should have done it like this". However, I'm also someone who is more passionate than most about things they love, so I'm not afraid to put a lot of effort into what I want to do. I think that's my strength.

── What made you want to become a Hello! Project idol?

S: I had admired idols ever since I was little, but I fell in love when I saw a performance of "Yume Miru 15sai" from S/mileage on a music TV show! I recorded that performance and watched it over and over, imitating their singing and dancing. I wanted to be a Hello! Project idol so much, so I took the audition.

── When you passed your audition, it's said that your reaction seemed to be "nothing" (laughs), how did you feel about it?

S: People do say I'm the type of person whose emotions don't show on their face, but really, I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't hide it, and maybe that's why I couldn't actually react. (laughs) Since Miyamoto Karin was on the jury too, I already thought "is this a dream?!", and I had no idea it was the final screening, or that I would be told I was joining the new group. I was so happy that I had passed and would become a member of Hello! Project myself, but I was also in a state of "have I seriously passed?", and I was anxious whether or not someone like me with no experience could perform well into the future, so I was full of a lot of considerations.

── Since you didn't have any prior (singing or dancing) experience, did you feel a gap or pressure from other members?

S: Tsutui Roko, who auditioned alongside me, has been dancing since she was a child, and is a great singer. I had never studied dance or singing seriously, so when we tried to learn choreography together, I was anxious of the difference between our speed in picking it up.

── It's been around a year since you debuted as an idol. Have you gotten used to performing?

S: To be honest, I'm not completely used to it yet. After each performance, I always go over the video to review, and I find that facial expressions are different to what I thought I was doing, or that I'm not really moving enough, so I'm still struggling to come closer to my "ideal self". However, from July we did a series of release events across different regions for three months for our major debut single, and I was able to work hard and improve from previous performances during that time. So I think I've matured since then.

── So what kind of person is your "ideal self" as an idol?

S: Someone who can be admired by many people. I want to be confident in my singing, dancing, and facial expressions, but when I look back at my performance videos, I notice a lot of things - like I'm really out of tune, or that I'm not moving enough, or that I'm not really expressing myself well enough, and it's easy for me to feel negative about that. I'm always thinking "if only I could do this a little better". I'd like to be able to perform with more confidence, and show more of my true self.

── With regards to expressiveness, is there a member your particularly admire?

S: Kitahara Momo-chan. She's not only good at smiling, but she's good at cool expressions, or girly and cute expressions too. She's great at expressing her own individuality. She adds her own arrangement into dances too, and it's so cool, so I really admire her!

── In reality, when you became an idol, is there anything that's different to what you imagined?

S: From the outside, it looks like it's all having fun, but there are a lot of obstacles. I've come to realise once again how amazing it is that the 8 members who were trainees have so much more experience than I do, but perform happily with smiles on their faces, without showing any of the efforts and hardship they've had to overcome.

── Who did you get along well with in OCHA NORMA at first?

S: Yonemura Kirara-chan. All the members of OCHA NORMA are the same generation*, so I was told from the beginning that it was fine not to use honourifics, but I found it difficult at first and ended up still using them. I ended up adding "-san" to both first and last names. Then at some point during it all, when we had all gotten together, Kirara-chan made a rule to once again express "no honourifics needed", and I think from there I was able to become a bit closer to all the members. She created a good atmosphere that made it easy for me to start or join in on conversation, and she has been really supportive of me ever since I joined!

*Note - even though OCHA NORMA is made of 8 trainees of varying tenures and 2 auditionees, since they all debuted in the group at the same time, they're on the same footing now.
