The American Dialect Society holds their Word of the Year vote at the LSA meetings each year. It's open to anyone attending the LSA meeting. You can go to LSA as a non-member (which is what I did) but it can be extremely expensive unless you have a friend who's also going who can get you a much cheaper guest pass.

For those of you in the FMAB fandom: @lantur ‘s fic “Delicate” is one of the best fics of all time! I’ve been waiting YEARS for her to come out with a book. Very exciting!!

2006: A conversation with a military recruiter prompts 18-year-old Tessa Halifax to enlist in the US Army after graduation. This pivotal decision takes her from her New Jersey suburb to the streets of Baghdad, as a military working dog handler. In Iraq, Tessa meets disillusioned soldier Ryan Chao.
