Music commission I've created for an anonymous client.
They wanted a theme for a character from a story they're writing. Considering that said story is mecha-themed, I was instructed to create a song that sounds mechanical while reflecting the same energetic and heroic vibes from openings found in various retro anime, particularly Shin Getter Robo and Virtua Fighter.
With that said, this is what I've managed to conjure up. I've used plenty of Roland plug-ins to give it that crunchy 90s aesthetic, and I think I've done quite well, hahaha.
They were writing a personal horror story about a group of people visiting an unknown southern town that causes them to immediately forget who they are, and they have to prepare for survival during the day before any supernatural threats appear at night.
With that said, despite myself not being well-versed with things that are scary, I've composed a theme that's somewhat eerie but also has a bit of adrenaline inserted onto it, to reflect the survival duties the characters have to endure.
It's been about a month since I've shown this, so I figured it'd be appropriate to provide here a monthly devlog to show how much this engine of mine is progressing. With that said, here's what I managed to do since:
(NOTE: These are ALL genuine, by the way. April Fools has no relation on this, honest!)
Main menu has been added with partial functionality. I'm putting that word in italic because, while you can highlight different options, selecting some of them does things while others don't really do anything. However, considering how it's already implemented, I already have the blueprint to create the other menus, such as the one you use while pausing the game.
Speaking of pausing, that has been added as well! I still have to do some tweaking to its visual aesthetic, but overall, it works just as one would expect.
Gamepad support has been added; it was done thanks to the inclusion of Juju Adams' "Input" library! While this not only means the game can be played with a controller, players will also be able to bind buttons to whatever they're comfortable with… well, as long as I implement an options menu for that, lol.
I punched myself in the teeth to force myself into learning how to use primitives and data structures. With that, curvy lasers have been implemented, so now everyone can suffer by having war flashbacks of Shou's non-spells.
Enemies can now move in more than just a single direction.
Gameplay gimmick has been implemented. Not gonna say what it is until I announce my Touhou fangame sometime in the future, but to give you a hint, it works kind of like the Season Gauge from Touhou 16.
And that's pretty much it! I still have plenty of work to do, but looking at this list, I'm very pleased by how things are shaping up so far. Right now I'm currently attempting to include Marisa as a playable character, which should be a piece of cake, given I can use the already-programmed Reimu as the blueprint. The latter is coded as "obj_player", after all, lmao.
So yeah, see you in May for the next devlog!
Hello guys! So, here's something way different than usual.
For the past three months, ever since GameMaker became widely available to the public, I've taken the opportunity to see if it's possible to make a Touhou-like engine with it.
It's not perfect, but it still very closely resembles the gameplay and visual aesthetics of the original Touhou games. Words aren't enough to describe how pleased I am with the work I've done with this.
So yeah, if you wanna see this engine in clearer action along with other details, please watch this video I've put on my YouTube channel.
I'd like to know what do you guys think of this project of mine, thank you in advance!

Here's music commission number 7 for Touhoufan1996 @ Twitter.
This is a theme for her OC Paimon, an inferno demon who has grown a cult in the underworld to become worthy of another character's love. With that in mind, I had to compose a theme that's both fierce, romantic, and with a slight sprinkle of longing.
Anyway, ignore the jump-y notes in the video. Apparently MIDItrail didn't like the pitch bending I applied to some parts of this song, lmao.
So, now that I'm done showing old music commission stuff, here's a more recent one which I had done this month. It's for @tshirtdragon.
This is a theme for an aardwolf character which he initially submitted as an entry for the raffle I've hosted back in October, but then I've got requested to do a longer theme for him, and here it is.
It's a bit experimental, since it's a mixture of Drum & Bass mixed with Rock, but I think I did quite well with composing something that sounds kinda fierce and riveting.
To finish off the music commissions I had accumulated from last year, here's one for Touhoufan1996 @ Twitter, because of course she has to find one way or another to make it into every batch I open. Not that I'm complaining, lmao.
Anyway, this is a theme for her mime OC Jacquelin. Taking that into account, I was tasked to create a song that has a vague French feeling to it.
Can Tumblr please stop cutting off part of my videos whenever I upload them?
I have to wait for like half an hour for the thing to "process" and be posted, and then all that wait is wasted when I find out that part of it is missing?
Another commission from last year, this one for ShishimaruKenji @ Twitter.
This is a theme I've prepared for Takeshi, one of his original characters. Taking the guy's lore into account, it's a very Japanese-like theme which has a somber feel to it at first, but then it builds into something more hopeful.
I've taken cues from the main theme of Final Fantasy VII while composing this.
I just remembered that, out of pure laziness, I haven't shown some of the music commission stuff I have created last year, so I figured it was time to change that, hahaha.
And so, here's something for OsloTheSorcerer @ Twitter.
Basically, it's a relaxed version of their main song, hence why there's now a "pond" in its name rather than a "river". It's supposed to represent the NPC-ish side of the character, as opposed to the action-oriented approach of the original.
