Breaking US government gifts 500,000 doses of Moderna vaccine to Bhutan The 500,000 doses of Moderna vaccine from the US government arrived in the country this afternoon (July 12). The consignment was gifted through the COVAX Facility. Another consignment of 121,900 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine donated by Denmark will arrive in the country tomorrow (July 13, 2021). East-West Highway is cutoff at Chumey, Bumthang today. Three temporary bridges at Domkhar, Hurjee and Rubee are completely washed away due to swollen streams. The bypasses were constructed due to the ongoing construction of permanent bridges. According to DOR officials, it could take few days for the highway to reopen to traffic. Kesang Choden Dorji, who was serving as the Director General of the Department of Adult and Higher Education, has been appointed as the new Bumthang Dzongdag. Rabgye Tobden, who was serving as Director in the Directorate Services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, is the new Haa Dzongdag. Phub Rinzin, who was the Director of the Construction Development Board, is the new Trongsa Dzongdag. March 27: His Majesty The King began a Royal Tour of the east, arriving in Mongar yesterday accompanied by Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen and Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck. This morning, the first COVID-19 vaccination in Mongar Dzongkhag was administered in the presence of His Majesty The King, at Mongar Dzong. In accordance with the astrological recommendations to start inoculations with a 30-year old woman born in the monkey year, Karma Pema Wangmo became the first person to receive the vaccine in the Dzongkhag. His Majesty also visited Mongar High School, which is one of the several vaccination centres in the dzongkhag, and met with those administering and receiving the vaccination. His Majesty said to those gathered that while the vaccine will be beneficial in protecting us during the pandemic, we need to continue to follow safety protocols diligently as a portion of the population, including children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, still remain unvaccinated.. His Majesty The King will be in the east for the duration of the nationwide vaccination programme. As the people of Bhutan pray for the success of the vaccination campaign during this important time, the Royal Visit is doubly significant for being His Royal Highness Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck’s first visit to the east. Update: Trashiyangtse's Khamdang-Ramjar MP Kuenga Loday was detained yesterday along with Khamdang mangmi Sangay Tempa and three other villagers for allegedly constructing a road illegally in a highly restricted and prohibited area. It was learnt that the road was constructed although the dzongkhag administration denied the permit for the construction. Launch of the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Bhutan’s Membership to the United Nations It was a proud and solemn moment for Bhutan when the United Nations (UN) formally admitted the country as its 128th member state at the UN Headquarters in New York on 21st September 1971. His Royal Highness Prince Namgyel Wangchuck led the Bhutanese delegation. The historic occasion was marked with three days of jubilant celebrations in Thimphu. Five decades later, as Bhutan marks the 50th anniversary of its membership to the UN, the occasion is no less special. The partnership between the UN and Bhutan has grown over the decades with collaborations expanding into a diverse range of fields contributing to Bhutan’s development goals. The Royal Government of Bhutan in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) Country Team in Bhutan, will hold a series of activities and events in 2021 to mark this historic milestone. The launch ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bhutan’s membership to the UN took place on Monday, 22 February 2021 coinciding with the celebrations of His Majesty The King’s 41st Birth Anniversary. In keeping with the COVID-19 protocol, the launch was marked amid a simple ceremony attended by a small gathering comprising of senior government officials, Heads of resident UN Agencies and the diplomatic community in Thimphu. Members of Bhutan’s diplomatic missions and embassies were invited to attend the event virtually. The launch ceremony was broadcast live through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Facebook page. A 17-year-old girl succumbed to injuries after a mishap at the mega dry port construction in Pasakha this morning. Rods of the under-construction RCC wall collapsed and hit her. She was trapped under rods for sometime before being rescued. Doctors pronounced her dead when she reached the hospital. Along with her, nine other workers were also injured and are currently in Phuentsholing general hospital. Two have sustained fractures and seven are in stable conditions.
