Cub Tracks remembers a day to forget
Monday was a perfectly crap day, and then the Cubs happened. It’s all my fault. I locked myself out of the house and my neighbor had to go in through the window. Moments later I stuck the nib from a diabetes testing kit in the heel of my hand, then nearly managed to break my foot keeping the lid from the crock pot from hitting the floor as said cat launched off into the aether.
I went to go lie down and forget about all of that and landed on yet another cat, who knocked my glasses off the nightstand and under the bed. Scrabbling around under there trying to find them resulted in the location of a hitherto-unknown puddle of cat pee, which I had to clean up.
Of course I knocked over the mop bucket, but I turned that into a plus by squirting a bunch of Spic N Span on the floor and mopping, which attracted cats and resulted in a lot of little paw prints.
Then the baseball started. Sometimes you just can’t win for losing. 6 errors!
“Just don’t hit the ball to me.” — Jim Deshaies
The hot takes and cold shots just keep on coming. Hoo boy!
Face front, true believers! It smells, but not THAT bad.
Here’s today’s Cubs News and Notes. As always * means autoplay on, or annoying ads, or both (directions to remove for Firefox and Chrome).
“The way the Cubs were defending, it often felt like an April Fools’ Day joke gone wrong.” — Ben Weinrib.
Mark Gonzales (Chicago Tribune* $): Cubs pitchers Yu Darvish and Carl Edwards Jr. keep the faith after struggles in loss to Rangers. “The ball felt fine and the mound was fine,” Darvish said after the shortest outing of his career. “It was all about me.” Sahadev Sharma $ elaborates.
Tony Andracki (NBC Sports Chicago*): Cole Hamels refuses to take the easy way out after tough loss. “I got to the bottom of the order and I let it get away from me,” he said.
Ryan Fagan (The Sporting News*): Cubs’ Steve Cishek on family golf-cart rides, neighborhood fishing contests and more. “I wish I could sing,” he said.
Jordan Bastian (MLB.com*): Hottovy cites lack of focus for Yu’s outing. “I saw just an amped-up version of him,” Hottovy said.
Sahadev Sharma (The Athletic $): Cubs’ worst bullpen fears realized on opening weekend. “Obviously the last two nights didn’t go our way,” Mike Montgomery said.
Evan Altman (Cubs Insider): Joe Maddon not worried about bullpen, “Just one guy had a tough time.” “We gotta straighten that out, obviously,” Maddon told reporters. Brett Taylor adds on. Tony Andracki has words also.
Rick Morrissey (Chicago Sun-Times* $): The panic will go away if Cubs ownership spends money on a top reliever or two. “I knew it, you knew it, your dog knew it and the Cubs knew it.”
Mark Gonzales (Chicago Tribune* $): Anthony Rizzo is in position to pick and choose at the plate. “You have to control your at-bat, but it is nice to have Kris (Bryant) hitting in front of me and Javy behind me,” Rizzo said. “There’s a lot of damage to be caused.”
Jesse Rogers (ESPN*): ‘I delete Twitter during the season’: Can Kris Bryant silence his newfound doubters? “Kris has expectations for himself that no one can put a limit on,” Rizzo said.
Phil Rosenthal (Chicago Tribune* $): A lackluster start after the Cubs stood pat in the offseason sends a message: Just OK apparently is OK. “...the time to panic probably was back when the Brewers, Cardinals and others were beefing up their rosters while the Cubs were standing more or less pat.”
Savannah Eadens (Chicago Sun-Times* $): A baseball game without peanuts? Cubs join Sox, add allergy-friendly game. “... the stadium will host a peanut allergy-friendly game April 14.”
Cubs birthdays: Jack Harper, Art Ceccarelli, Dick Radatz, Hector Cruz, Al Nipper, Jon Lieber, Hisanori Takahashi. Also notable: Hughie Jennings, Luke Appling, Don Sutton, (HoF).
Food for thought:

Bears and Packers play in 100 days, so give us your very specific prediction for that game
We’re 100 days away from the start of the NFL’s 2019 season which is special because it’s not only the NFL’s 100th season, but it’s also the 100th season of the Chicago Bears. By now you’re all aware that the Bears were chosen to kick the season off in the Thursday Night prime time special on September 5, and they’ll so by hosting their rival, the Green Bay Packers.
A year ago these two teams split, with the Packers knocking off the Bears in their 100th anniversary season opener, 24-23, and the Bears eliminating the Packers from a postseason opportunity with their 24-17 win in their week 15 match-up.
There’s a lot that can happen in these next hundred days, but this is your chance to get a very specific prediction on record. You can give me your score prediction, a player stat line, or anything else you feel will happen that night.
I’ll go first to give you a couple ideas of what I’m looking for.
I predict that Khalil Mack will have 6 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in that game. I also predict that NBC Sports color-man, Cris Collinsworth, will talk about Mitchell Trubisky’s poor Pro Football Focus grade in the first quarter.
What very specific predictions do you guys have for that game?

University of Chicago endowment grows to $8.2 billion
The University of Chicago endowment grew to an all-time high of $8.2 billion as of June 30, 2018, following an 8 percent return on investments for the preceding year.
Vice President and Chief Investment Officer Mark Schmid said investment returns have added nearly $5.4 billion in market value to the endowment since the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, driven by a 9.5 percent average return.
The average compounded investment result for the University over the past 10 years was a 5.8 percent gain; the average over the past 15 years was a 9 percent gain; and the return over the past 20 years was 8.6 percent.
Over the past two decades, the endowment has grown from $1.1 billion to its current level of $8.2 billion. Annual endowment figures reflect the net impact of fundraising, investment performance and endowment payout, which contributes to the University’s operating budget.
“The University’s investments provide a foundation of support for faculty, students and a broad array of programs and initiatives,” Schmid said. “Working closely with the Board of Trustees’ Investment Committee and Financial Planning Committee, as well as University leadership, we continue to believe that an integrated approach to the University’s fiscal health will best support our mission in all types of market conditions on a long-term basis.”

Big J.Crew Flash Sale! (Stock up for Work and Weekend!)
Sooo this was NOT the post I planned for today–I spent over two hours on the post that was supposed to go up this morning and then my site crashed and it got deleted 😭So..I’ll be re-writing that for later this week, haha!
In the meantime, I did stumble upon another amazing J.Crew flash sale. (I feel like they’ve been running even more crazy sales lately than usual!) So I’m doing a quick roundup for those of you who want to invest in a few more essentials for Fall.
The deal: For 48 hours J.Crew is having a flash sale–get 35% off with code FLASH! Here are my picks:
Tissue Turtlenecks on sale!!
Like the one I’m wearing above! (Sorry–the earrings/scarf are from last year!)
If you’ve been following me through at least ONE winter, you know that these turtlenecks are the backbone of my wardrobe during the colder months. They just came out with more PRINTS–AAAH–I just got the camel and navy stripe and the leopard is in my cart as we speak! They’re perfect for layering because they’re really thin! Wear them to work, on the weekend, pretty much everywhere!
Office-friendly essentials:
I am also loving their Cameron pants in these fall colors (especially the olive!) I’m also a fan of [duh] the French Girl crops–they’re work appropriate yet don’t look like “office pants.” They also have some really cute dresses and skirts!
Tops + Sweaters:
So many cute tops and sweaters–including my favorite new leopard silk button down! (Runs TTS) I’m obsessed! Also, I’m obsessed with their bodysuits–I need the henley version!
Bottoms:
Including my favorite Jcrew jeans! (They’re super stretchy and so comfortable on! Order your regular size!)
Coats and blazers:
BOTH my favorite warm wool coats are on sale–I know I won’t shut up about them but if you want a nice wool coat, you want the Cocoon Coat (order your normal size) or the Lady Day coat (order a size up!) They’re made with extra special material that makes them warmer than other coats!
Also, my favorite sweater blazer is in the sale too! It’s perfect for the office but I wear it ALL the time with casual outfits!
Their Daphne wool topcoat is also one of my go-to fall coats this season, but it’s not warm enough for Chicago winter–better for ladies in milder climates if you’re looking for a warm coat!
Festive dresses (for weddings and holiday parties!)
Happy shopping!

Governor Pritzker puts Thompson Center up for sale
The long political saga to determine the fate of Chicago’s James R. Thompson Center took another turn on Friday as Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill laying out a two-year plan to sell the polarizing Helmut Jahn-designed building at 100 W. Randolph Street.
Pritzker’s declared his intention to unload the architecturally significant but run-down structure in February when legislation authorizing a sale arrived on his desk in February. Having passed the Illinois House and Senate in 2017 but then stuck in limbo during the state’s budgetary standoff under former Governor Bruce Rauner, the legislation now goes into immediate effect with Pritzker’s signature.
Under the plan’s provisional timeline, the state would issue a Request For Proposal (RFP) within a year. Developers would get four or five months to draft and submit their proposals, and the state would select a winner three months after that before finalizing a contract. The roughly 2,200 state employees that work in the Thompson Center will move to other offices including the Michael A. Bilandic building located across the street.
The rapid redevelopment timeline could be bad news for preservationists who have pushed to landmark the endangered postmodern design by holding rallies, circulating online petitions, and even producing a short-subject documentary film.
Although Helmut Jahn released his own vision for the site calling for renovating and preserving the building and adding a slender 110-story tower at the Thompson Center’s southwest corner, it’s unclear if potential buyers will want to save any of the neglected 1980s-era structure and its impressive 17-story atrium, albeit difficult to heat and cool.
Whatever the outcome, the site is a challenge for redevelopment. A buyer would have to maintain the operation of the block’s existing CTA station. Complicating things further, state officials will also need to resolve an existing lease with the building’s retailers that isn’t set to expire until 2034, according to the Chicago Tribune.
In the coming months, the state will also need to iron out other key details of the plan, such as zoning for the building’s redevelopment, with incoming Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot.

Support walking and biking on Logan Boulevard
Ask people who've walked, biked or driven on Logan Blvd. from Rockwell St. to Lathrop Homes on Diversey Ave. and they'll tell you it's a dangerous, high-stress experience.
The stakes for fixing Logan to Lathrop couldn't be higher.
A continuous 27-mile Chicago River Trail is coming to fruition, including a new trail at Lathrop and projects like the 312 RiverRun Trail and Manor Greenway.
The growing network of riverfront trails is only useful if it's safely and easily accessible to neighborhood residents.
This stretch is a high-crash area that limits access to the retail corridor surrounding Elston Avenue. It includes the notorious Logan and Western Ave. intersection under the Kennedy Expressway, where people are asked to cross several lanes of traffic with inadequate lighting and poorly marked crosswalks.
To address these dangerous conditions, Active Trans, in partnership with Logan Square Neighborhood Association and Port Urbansim, sought feedback from residents and stakeholders over the past ten months to identify and build support for improvements that make it easier to walk and bike.
Today, we're pleased to release these recommendations in our new report, Reimagining Logan Boulevard to Lathrop Homes.
The report features a variety of recommendations to improve conditions for people walking and biking, including removing a travel lane on Logan to create more space for people walking and biking. It also recommends installing protected bike lanes on Logan and the Diversey Ave. bridge, re-painting crosswalks and adding a crosswalk on Logan at Western Ave. (pictured).
All recommendations were informed by neighborhood residents and an advisory committee comprised of 20 organizations.
Please join us at 3:30 p.m. on October 30 for a rally in support of improving safety on Logan Blvd. It will be held on the north side of Logan on the service drive directly west of the skate park. Both 1st Ward Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno and 32nd Ward Scott Waguespack are planning to attend.
Most of the part of Logan that we focused in this project -- from Rockwell St. to Diversey Ave. -- sees an average daily traffic count of 8,900 vehicles, making it an excellent candidate for right-sizing. Cities have seen significant safety benefits from right-sizing four lane roads like Logan that carry as many as 18,000 vehicles.
Active Trans will continue to work with neighborhood residents and stakeholders to advance these improvements. We'd like to thank more than 1,600 residents who provided input and the project advisory committee for its significant contributions.
But our work is not finished: We need you to help us fight for these improvements -- some of which will require long-term support.
Take action now and support safety improvements on Logan by signing our petition to Aldermen Moreno and Waguespack.
Please join the movement for a safer Logan Boulevard and our campaign for a continuous Chicago River Trail.

Willing and Feeling
“Creation for me is the antidote to despair.” ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
I follow Elizabeth “Liz” Gilbert on Instagram and saw her post this morning about a new podcast, The Ted Interview, for which she was the first guest.
Though I haven’t seen a ton of Ted Talks, I get so much out of them when I take the time to watch. The idea behind this podcast is to dive deeper than we can in the 10-20 minute talks, which are one-way, allowing a conversation about the ideas that previous Ted speakers have shared. The host is Chris Anderson, who runs Tex Talks, and (I learned in this episode) also happens to be a bereaved parent.
This interview with Liz is about creativity and exploring what we are curious about vs. diving all-in to things we have passion for. It’s also about what we are willing to do and feel in life.
She talks about inspiration, as well as fear, and how we can use both in our work, understanding that inspiration usually won’t arrive like a lightening bolt and we don’t have to be fearless to create.
There is also discussion of the experience of suffering, growing in resilience, healing, and the perspective we gain over time, including how we are able create through all of that.
That said, she doesn’t believe that all great art has to come from suffering and dark places, as some people suggest.
She talks about being willing to feel what ever she needs to, in part to keep herself from falling into depression (which she describes as the absence/avoidance of feeling).
The last part of this podcast episode focuses how we deal with and move through grief, specifically Liz’s recent experience losing her best friend/partner in January to pancreatic cancer. She says that if we try to resist our grief we will suffer more. This all really resonated with me and my own journey through grief, especially when she spoke of how music and dance have helped her to cope. I would also add writing, as that is something that often works for me when I am processing painful life experiences.
This post started as me taking notes on my phone, for what I thought might be a short intro to recommending this new podcast via social media, and grew into my realizing it might be better suited to share here.
My biggest takeaway, that I keep thinking about and returning to today, is what Liz shared about being willing to feel our emotions, as opposed to trying to avoid them (which can lead to depression).
This is something I’ve worked on and talked with my therapists about over the years, as there are many ways we learn to numb ourselves when it comes to pain and grief. However, in my experience we won’t be able to heal and move forward if we don’t allow ourselves to face our feelings, however they may present themselves.
What are you willing to do and feel today?

New Coffee Shop Could Kickstart Development on Goose Island
Passion House Coffee Roasters plans to give Goose Island a rare option for food and drink when it opens its third cafe in August, just east of the Kennedy Expressway and the Division Street and Elston Avenue intersection. It’s a bold move within the formerly industrialized area that sees tons of motor vehicle traffic but barely any pedestrians. That portion of Division is also known for Restaurant Depot, the member-only store for restaurant owners; and Goose Island Shrimp House’s fried seafood.
Passion House opened its first cafe in 2017 in Logan Square. Last month, it opened another cafe inside Politan Row, the West Loop food hall that shares a building with McDonald’s Corporation’s headquarters. It’s a big year for Joshua Millman’s coffee company. Later this year, Passion House will move its roasting operations from Fulton Market to East Garfield Park. They’re sharing the facility with Veteran Roasters, a company that helps vets get jobs after their time in the armed forces.
Millman said property developer R2 Companies approached him to move into the Goose Island space. R2 is developing the space on Goose Island, an artificial island through Division Street cutting off at Halsted and Elston. Developer Sterling Bay has its Lincoln Yards development north of the island which has ignited interest in surrounding properties near the river. Amazon already has a building on the island.
R2 has already courted Hogsalt Hospitality’s Brendan Sodikoff for an entertainment complex that will include restaurants along the Chicago River. On Tuesday, Sodikoff — whose Hogsalt restaurants include Au Cheval and Maude’s Liquor Bar in the West Loop — said he didn’t have any updates on the project to share quite yet.
Sodikoff’s presence is meaningful to Millman, as bringing in a well-known restauranteur shows to him how serious R2 is about bringing something unique to the area. Passion House’s cafe will take up about 1,200 square feet; it’s slightly larger than Logan Square. They’ll have a full menu of items including overnight oats, and a vegetable tartine. Millman wants to give customers unique choices. Vegetarians can try a tartine instead of a veggie sandwich (Millman said bland sandwiches are often menu staples at many coffee shops). Earlier this year, they hired chef Jeremy Leven, the former MFK chef who also worked at Gaslight Coffee Roasters in Logan Square.
“I always wanted an elevated food program, I just didn’t know how to do it,” Millman said.
Millman is impressed with R2’s vision for Goose Island, and sees an opportunity for Passion House to be part of something unique. His coffees, which come in three different genres — ambient, mainstream, and experimental — are aimed as gateways, to cater to different tastes. A die-hard coffee fan may enjoy the experimental Kenyan “Take It Easy” while coffee novices may be more comfy with the ambient “Chicago House” blend. Millman was a former DJ and a house music fan; Chicago is the birthplace of that musical genre.
This location is in a strip mall-looking building complete with a parking lot. It’s Passion House’s first location with parking. If development on Goose Island picks up, Passion House could be seen as a pioneer. The prospect of pouring more coffee to Chicagoans excites Millman as he continues to build his company. Passion House Goose Island could open in late August.

Fall Makeup || My Current 3 Favorite Eyeliners
Fall is in full swing, a time for events, get-togethers, fall fashion & preparation for holiday parties!  It is the perfect time for extra glamour, and enjoying makeup to it's fullest.  It seemed like a great time to start sharing my recent favorites, and today I'm including my top 3 favorite eyeliners:
#1. Mac Cosmetics Pro Longwear Fluidline  This has been my go-to and my bread and butter for YEARS, actually since I was a teenager!  There is just nothing like a fresh pot, and having complete control with your own brush.  This gel liner is soft and extremely "pigmented" for drawing on the most beautiful black cat-eye.
#2. Urban Decay Perversion Fine-Point Eye Pen I have been so impressed with this product!  This pen is easy to use, it stays put all day, and the product lasts forever!
#3. Butter London Stroke of Wow Roll On Liner via my monthly BoxyCharm I absolutely love this specifically for the "tail" of the my cat-eyes!  It draws a perfectly straight line, so I often use one of the top 2 first, and then I finish with this on the end of my eyes.  It recently came in one my BoxyCharm shipments, which is only way I would have discovered it!  I highly recommend BoxyCharm - it is so perfect for trying out products you normally would never have known about.
♥ Love from New York City ♥

In an email sent to associates late in the evening Jan. 8, Keller Williams Realty, Inc. announced co-founder Gary W. Keller would return to his role as CEO after having left that same post in 1995 and serving on the company’s board since then. Keller replaces John Davis, who was appointed CEO in April 2017. “Since its founding in 1983, Keller Williams has always been a pioneering company focused on growth, innovation and culture,” Keller told colleagues via email. “Nothing has changed. I am as committed as ever to positioning Keller Williams to lead the real estate industry into the future.”
Over the last several months and in preparation for this transition, Team began leading all marketing, training and operational efforts for the company.
“Together through Labs, Josh and I have collaborated with thousands of you – our agents and leaders in the field – to design the real estate operating system of the future, putting your data back in your hands, and empowering you through [artificial intelligence] to provide more value to your clients,” Keller said in his email.
Keller and Joe Williams jointly founded Keller Williams in 1983, with Keller serving as its first CEO. Leaving the post in 1995, he continued to serve as the chairman of the board while pursuing other opportunities, having written and published four books on real estate in the intervening years.
Today, Keller Williams counts more than 190,000 associates across 980 offices worldwide. At the end of the third quarter last year, the company was home to 166,854 agents in the U.S. and had closed 842,186 transactions year-to-date.

George H.W. Bush's Service Dog Sully Visits His Casket in Capitol
George H.W. Bush's service dog, Sully, made a last visit with the former president Tuesday, joining others paying respect to Bush as he lies in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
Sully was already well-known as Bush's service dog — his Instagram account has more than 150,000 followers — before an image of him lying beside Bush's flag-draped casket shared by a Bush family spokesman became one of the most touching images associated with the 41st president's death.
Bush died at home in Houston on Friday and was flown to Washington, D.C., on Monday. He is lying in state where the public can pay their respects before a funeral on Wednesday and his burial in Texas Thursday.
Sully was brought into the packed rotunda along with people who benefitted from the Americans With Disabilities Act, which Bush signed into law in 1990. Sully sat down in the hushed room before quietly circling the casket with his handler as well as former Secretary of Homeland Security and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

Sully flew to Washington with Bush on a presidential plane, but after his visit to the Capitol, he'll continue on to New York, where he was trained. He'll get a refresher course before being assigned to help soldiers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Former President George H.W. Bush’s Casket Arrives in Washington, D.C.
Tumblr media
The image of Sully beside Bush's casket, captioned "Mission complete" by Bush's spokesman, is powerful, said John Miller, president and CEO of America's VetDogs, the group that trained Sully and the "puppies with a purpose" at the "Today" show and NBC Los Angeles.
The photo "shows the bond the president and Sully had with each other," Miller told NBC New York.
Guide Dog for President George H.W. Bush Is Returning to NY
Tumblr media
Sully's Instagram account shows the yellow Labrador retriever by Bush's side, meeting service members, playing on the beach at the Bush compound in Maine and more.
Bush received the 2-year-old dog in June from America's VetDogs, which helps match service dogs with veterans, active-duty service members and first responders with disabilities. The president had a form of Parkinson's disease, and Sully could open doors, pick up items and summon help.
At Walter Reed in Bethesda, Maryland, Sully will join the Facility Dog Program, working with other dogs to help with physical and occupational therapy for wounded soldiers and active duty personnel at the hospital.

Stock up, stock down: Bears Vikings
At some point during Sunday’s game, I started feeling sorry for the Vikings. Luckily, the Bears aren’t as soft as I am, and they never relented in swarming Kirk Cousins and suffocating the will from their division-rivals. The Bears crushed the Vikings post-season dreams in their own building, in a season those purple losers entered with perhaps the most hope in franchise history.
Sorry!
Stock Up
Jordan Howard, RB - Howard is becoming an integral part of this Bears offense at the perfect time this season, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I appreciate the deception, finesse, and efficiency in Nagy’s offensive scheme as much as anyone, but sometimes you just want to see a Bear explode through a defense tackle and truck past a few second-levelers on his way to a medium-speed strut into the open field. JHow delivers on this better than anyone, and he brought the thump to the tune of 109 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries.
Akiem Hicks, DI - Akiem’s stock really can’t go much higher in my mind, and his pro bowl invitation certainly suggests others have grown to appreciate the Dream, but I can’t ignore the dominant performance and incessant interior pressure he delivered on Sunday. You don’t need to look at the box score to know Hicks terrorized Kirk Cousins all game, but if you do, you’re pupils might just turn into heart emoji’s when you see a team-leading 1.5 sacks, a team-leading 2 additional QB hits, and a team-tying 1.5 tackles for loss.
Leonard Floyd, OLB - Floyd didn’t rack up any sacks on Sunday, but he did just about everything else you could ask of him. He led the team in tackles with 8, and tied Hicks with one and half backfield take-downs. Incidental stock down for people who believe Floyd needs to be a dedicated pass-rusher.
Mitchell Trubisky, QB - Biscuit didn’t light up the stat line, and he probably didn’t anything to sway the haters, but he walked into a hostile environment—which according to super-bowl winning linebacker Danny Trevathan was “stupid loud”—and delivered a clean efficient game. He stepped up in the right moments and converted multiple crucial third downs without his top three receivers. As this season progressed, I’ve become less worried about a mistake at every snap and more confident that Biscuit will bring our Bears one step closer to winning.
People who love winning - Some argued that the better strategy would be to lose this game because they preferred matching up against the Vikings in the playoffs. I can’t blame anyone for thinking the Bears would devour these Minnesota also-rans in a wild card round, but the quote Matt Nagy’s post-game press-conference, “I love winning. I think it’s fun to win.” I think Nagy may be on to something.
Cheap-shot jokes at Kirk Cousins salary - I can think of 84 million reasons people like to poke fun at what the Vikings paid for an underwhelming quarterback who seems to crumble when it matters most. I can think of 58 million remaining reasons the Vikings will have salary cap problems for at least the next two years and 60 million in dead cap reasons Kirk Cousins will be around to 3-and-out the Vikings into NFC-north irrelevance for the foreseeable future.
Stock Down
The Third Down: The Bears owned the third down Sunday. Third down should be ashamed of itself. Presumably it’s the most important down in football, but the Bears defense shrugged it off like a minor nuisance as the Vikings proceeded to convert only one of 12 third down attempts. The Vikings defense—who’d entered the game allowing a league-leading 28.4% third-down conversion rate—laid out a red carpet for Trubisky to convert literally double that at 57%. Bow to your new masters third down.
Anyone who predicted less than 12 Bears wins: Which, by my count, is everyone but me and Ken Mitchell.
Bears receiving corps: Both Taylor Gabriel and Anthony Miller left the game with injuries. Kevin White and Josh Bellamy combined for 2 receptions on 7 targets and both failed to pull in a well-placed deep sideline pass. Turbo and Miller are supposed to be minor, but I’m not happy with the thought of our top three receivers returning from injury at the same time. Silver lining: Javon Wims caught 4 of 4 targets including a high stakes contested third down snatch and was a runner-up in the stock up category.
How about you folks? Whose stocks are rising and falling in your mind?

MLB Bullets rings in the new
And a Happy New Year to everyone and may 2019 bring the Cubs another World Series title. Me, I’m still writing 2017 on my box scores.
I’m also pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve shown a photo from the Australian Baseball League for a piece.
Free agent catcher Jonathan Lucroy has gone to be with the Angels. No, he didn’t die. He signed a one-year, $3.35 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels.
The Blue Jays acquired former Cubs pitcher Clayton Richard from the Padres for minor league outfielder Conor Panas.
The Blue Jays also signed pitcher Matt Shoemaker to one-year deal. Shoemaker had been non-tendered by the Angels.
One free agent is definitely signing this week or he isn’t playing in MLB in 2019. Seibu Lions pitcher Yusei Kikuchi has until January 3 to sign with an MLB team or he’s returning to Japan for 2019. Jason Catania has a look at Kikuchi and the teams most likely to sign him. Not surprisingly, they’re all on the West Coast.
The Brewers and Padres are rumored to be the favorite trade destinations for Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray.
The Diamondbacks are reportedly softening on their stance against trading pitcher Robbie Ray and are now listening to offers for the left-hander.
The Twins signed free agent Nelson Cruz to a one-year, $14 million deal last week. Jonah Keri explains why teams aren’t paying for power on the free agent market anymore and he also wonders if the market hasn’t overcorrected and the Twins got a steal.
Twins pitcher Tyler Duffey got a birthday present when Cruz signed with the Twins. He gave up a 493-foot HR to Cruz in 2016 and Duffey is elated he won’t have to pitch to Cruz in 2019.
The Rays were a team that lost out on Cruz and Mike Axisa looks at six hitters the Rays could go for instead of Cruz.
One of those hitters is Mariners DH Edwin Encarnacion, who isn’t expected to stay in Seattle after being traded there earlier this winter. Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Rays, Astros and White Sox have shown the most interest in trading for Encarnacion. Those three teams are also interested in Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez.
Athletics outfielder Kyler Murray’s NCAA football career came to an end with the Oklahoma Sooners loss to Alabama. Pete Thamel talks to both baseball and football scouts about Murray’s professional prospects and most observers in both sports think he’ll abandon baseball for the NFL. Basically, they think it will be hard for him to go from playing in front of 85,000 football fans to playing for the Beloit Snappers.
Rian Watt has some memories of the recently-retired Miguel Montero and why his memories of the former Cubs catcher mean so much to him.
Dayn Perry has 50 baseball predictions for 2019.
Mike Petriello has five pitchers who should break out in 2019.
Bryan Hoch lists five things the Yankees have yet to do this winter.
And Ken Gurnick has five things the Dodgers should do before Opening Day.
Todd Zolecki has five things for the Phillies to do. Methinks this was an MLB.com assignment to all their beat writers this week. (And yes, Jordan Bastian has five for the Cubs.)
Jake Mintz looks back at Rick Ankiel’s career, his battles with the yips and his re-inventing himself as a hitter.
If you want to know what really goes on at the Winter Meetings, Corey Brock follows a young man around the Winter Meetings who wants to land a job as a baseball broadcaster. (The Athletic sub. req.)
An 88-year-old Astros fan teared up when his family chipped in for a trip to Spring Training for Christmas.
Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams got mistaken for Bryce Harper by his waiter, so Williams told the waiter that he (Harper) was signing with the Yankees.
And finally, one of the biggest story of the weekend was the skies lighting up in New York after a transformer blew. Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard (aka Thor) assured his teammates that he didn’t do it, but that he was willing to help out if they needed him to.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster. Happy 2019.
