는 / 은 VS 이 / 가

This is the most asked question and request filling my inbox right now, so I decided to make a post helping those who are still confused differentiate between the two! Happy Learning :)

Here are some main points that make them different:

When the noun / subject of the sentence has been mentioned previously in a conversation, you use 이 / 가 in the next statement:    ♡ 내 친구는 한국인이에요 - my friend is Korean    ♡ 내 친구가 한국에서 태어났어요 - my friend was born in Korea

When you want to emphasize a noun, you should use 은 / 는 before the verb of the sentence but 이 / 가 should be used with the noun previously:    ♡ 한국 음식이 좋은데 음식은 매워요 - I like Korean food, but it’s spicy

When there are two nouns in a sentence and an adjective, use 은 / 는 with the first noun and 이 / 가 with the second:    ♡ 오늘은 날씨가 좋네요 - the weather is nice today

When it’s a negative sentence with the verb ‘to be’ (아니다 - to not be), you always have to use 이 / 가 with the noun before the verb:     ♡ 그것은 빵이 아니에요 - that is not bread

When 있다 / 없다 (to have / to not have)are used, you should always use 이 / 가 with the noun before 있다 / 없다:     ♡ 비빔밥이 있어요? - Is there bibimbap?    ♡ 내일 시간이 없어요. - I don’t have time tomorrow.

When it is obvious that you are talking about something in a sentence, use 이 / 가: (similar to #1)    ♡ 희주: 식당은 어디세요? - where’s the restaurant?    ♡ 종호: 식당이 여기 있어요 - the restaurant is here

Basic Rule: subject particles go with the subject of the sentence and topic particles go with the topic of the sentence - yes they can mean the same thing depending on the sentence, but hopefully, with these rules, you can understand the difference easier! 줄임말 (Slang Part 3: Getting Conversational)

So you know the basics of Korean texting slang.. but now you want more.. right? Let’s play with some new words that aren’t just shortened versions, here’s some common conversational slang for you to use.

콜 - to be down, sounds good (can be question or answer) “치맥 콜?” =  “You down to get some chicken and beer?” 

~각 – feels like “오늘 비도 오니까 막걸리각인데.. 막걸리 콜?” = “I’m feeling makgoli today cause it’s raining, down for some makgoli?”  “한조에 겐지까지 있으면 질각인데” = “We have both Hanzo and Genji.. feels like we’re gonna lose.”

갓~ / ~느님 - God / Someone fantastic 3 pop culture gods of Korea “갓연아” - Yuna Kim (figure skater)   “유느님” - Jaesok Yu (TV MC)  “치느님” - Fried Chicken (who doesn’t love it?)

그린라이트 - Green light to move in (only romantically) “어제 좋아하는 남자애가 우산 씌워줬는데, 이거 혹시 그린라이트야?” = “Yesterday the guy I like held an umbrella for me, is that the green light?” 

빵터지다 - Bust out laughing (빵 = sound, 터지다 = explode), LOL “가디언즈 오브 갤러시 2에서 메리 포핀스 대사에서 진짜 빵터졌잖아.” = “I busted out laughing at the Mary Poppins line in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”

빡세다 - Something difficult  “카페에서 알바하는데 생각보다 빡세더라.” = “Working at a cafe is so much harder than I thought.”

흑역사 - Dark past / embarrassing moment “마이스페이스에 올린 사진들 미친거 같아, 내 흑역사야 진짜.” = “I can’t believe my old myspace pictures, that was a dark period in my life…” “나 오늘 스마트폰 보고 가다가 넘어져가지고 또 흑역사 하나 생성하고 왔잖아…” = “I had the most embarrassing moment today.. I fell down because I was watching my phone…”

140618 [89/100 Days of Productivity]

Just watched the first FIFA match with my dad (up until half time cos I’m tired now lol) and I don’t actually enjoy watching a lot of team sports, but I’ve got into football (yes football, I will not call it soccer lol) during the last FIFA and anyways I actually do enjoy it and I’m rather excited to watch a couple matches. This lesson was prompted from one of the requests that I got, asking for everyday, conversational phrases so I hope that this helps you to learn some of the most important phrases to know in Korean. I decided to base these phrases around the basics that you may want to know for travelling purposes so I hope that you will eventually manage to use them if you visit South Korea at any time in the future - I wanted the phrases to be practical in nature so that you could actually get around to using them.
