Lemme teach y'all something about piracy. I've been working on videogames for over a decade, so this is actually something I know about.

So, pirates generally fall into two categories:

Try Before You Buy - These folks just want to check out whatever you made and see if it's worth spending money on. The vast majority of these people will buy the real thing at some point (or buy the official merch, which is where the actual profit margins are usually made).

I'm Not Spending Money On This - These folks just want the thing, but not so much that they're willing to buy it.

Some folks like to think that piracy is wrong and can only be detrimental, but the fact of the matter is that piracy is incredibly beneficial to creators: the people who don't support you were never going to regardless of if piracy existed, and the people who support you after pirating your work weren't going to if pirating it wasn't possible. Ultimately, things boil down to this:

Piracy isn't theft, it's free advertising.

Theft is the removal of a finite possession: something gets taken away and you don't have it anymore. By comparison, if your work gets pirated; it's still yours, you still have it, and you can still distribute it and/or sell it. You don't lose anything by having your work pirated, it just falls into the hands of people who wouldn't have access to it otherwise, making piracy effectively free advertising. There are corporations with massive advertising budgets in the millions of dollars that would commit heinous crimes for those kinds of returns.

Meanwhile, piracy offers them for free.

"It's well documented that piracy hurts authors" *links to one author talking vaguely about how he's pretty sure it hurt him*

Meanwhile decades, literal DECADES of scientific research has been poured into proving this claim and consistently proved the opposite:

"Piracy" aka free access to books actually INCREASES SALES.

I get that it "feels" like theft. But it's literally beneficial to authors.
