ok this is the last reply im leaving bc im not actually interested in debating individual people's feelings between choosing rage and death. everyone projects their own personal experiences onto media and you are allowed to dislike the rat grinders if you want but my post is pointing out the similarities between people raging with vitriol about them vs their decision to choose rage. i'm glad you are 32 years old and thus have the foresight to not do the same as they did, but these particular teenagers are fictional and do not have that and it is far more rewarding to me to engage with media in a way that allows me to empathise with the characters and themes in it. and i am simply not someone who would ever call a teenager making a choice because they were scared of dying "real chicken shit"! hope u have the day you deserve
sorry but if you find out that a group of fictional teenagers chose eternal rage over eternal death and you're still frothing and fuming about them oh i know for SURE you would do exactly the same in their position LMFAOOO

good for you bud but if you're going to approach media without the willingness to engage with the characters and themes because they're fictional then we are having entirely different conversations here lmao

Image two: From left to right - Adaine readies her magically glowing hand, Gorgug cracks his knuckles, Fig pages Colin Counterspell on her earpiece, Riz hisses, and Fabian steadies Kristen as she smirks down at Kipperlilly.
Image three: From left to right - Kipperlilly glares up at Kristen, Buddy looks on worriedly, Oisin has a hand on Kipperlilly's shoulder as he tries to intervene, Mary Anne has a deadpan stare, Ruben poses moodily, and Ivy smirks behind Oisin.

I am not a ratgrinder fan and never will be but they're kids, of course they didn't want to stay dead, even if that meant becoming puppets. The likely hood was they watched each other die and were ripped apart painfully. Lucy Frostblade's bravery in refusing to worship Ankarna is not measured by her friends agreeing to it and that being 'weak', but rather how extraordinary her courage was to refuse and stay dead.

I love how unsympathetic Kipperlily's backstory comes across, because like yes, the desire to be more "interesting" through trauma like Riz is awful, but also its her most private bad thought that she only shares with her guidance counsellor while trying to work through her rage issues, its selfish and in bad taste but of course it is, she was like 14. And so now that that desire has been twisted by literal deific rage into something actually malevolent, none of the bad kids are even willing to try to empathize with her. And like, tbc I don't really blame them for that, its a *lot* to ask them to try and understand the person who has been antagonistic to them for the whole year and apparently resented them for years before that, which I think honestly adds to the tragedy of it all. God, she's so interesting

it really does drive me crazy trying to interact with any of the popular fantasy high posts on here. because people will say with their whole chest they hate and have got no sympathy for the rat grinders and that a) jawbone should've punched kipperlilly for coming to him with her Undiagnosed Mental Health Issues (you know, like the ones adaine used to have in freshman year?) b) the bad kids should take them all someplace to 6v1 them one by one and cold blooded murder them (??????) c) whole heartedly hate and make fun of them for being scared and alone and dead when they went on an adventure with a teacher and adult who was supposed to PROTECT them in a place they weren't prepared for.
the rat grinders were just. normal students. they are more like you than you could ever be like the bad kids. they were mid & they didn't want to be so they pushed themselves too fast too far and now all of them have got the worst survivor's guilt on earth on top of actively having to serve the rage incarnation of a dead god.
if you have the cognitive dissonance where one of the bad kids was in the plot line and you'd be drawing fanart making angsty meta crying about your poor baby forced into a bad situation and turn around and go 'lol nah shoot THESE guys in the head though' when it's an NPC I can only assume you've not understood narrative parallels or learned empathy past, like, a kindergarten level

Incredibly specific reference but your Jace theory makes me think of The Anime Club Part 6: Grave of the Fanboys. Specifically, when Clyde says "Don't make me stop this car!...[beat]...because I'm not, I'm going to drive it into this ocean". A frazzled doofus forced into somehow being the guardian for a bunch of weirdos who are hard to wrangle for anyone let alone a doofus, dragging them to their end but trying to keep them basically in order until then. And then when everything is over and their schemes are done the news remembers it as "Gay Boy Suicide Pact? Sucking Dicks For Satan??", all of it having been pointless from the start.
HELP i've never heard of this before so true

guys ive become so so attached to a sympathetic but incompetent jace stardiamond who failed to save those kids in the mountains but was too cowardly to choose death. and is now forced to lead them all to their doom
jace becoming a fucked up guardian for the rat grinders as the only adult who knows what happened to them and who is helping them with the larger plan with ankarna. while navigating his own guilt and the kids’ bitterness over how he failed them. he wasn’t strong enough to protect them but maybe now he can stick it out with them. softlaunching a new fhsy doomed tragic dynamic for me to go crazy over: student and teacher.
so badly want a jace stardiamond that puts the pathetic in sympathetic ❤️ i am beaming visions into past brennan’s brain i simply think this could be sooo much more interesting than your classic “evil and manipulative from the start” type villain

dude i CANNOT stop thinking abt ruben calling lucy noble, that she stuck to her guns.... implying he knows what he's doing is bad, but was scared and pressured into it. imagining the rat grinders going like "we had no other choice, right?" only to find out lucy WAS brave enough to make the selfless choice. GOD. THEY WERE 15
