Pairing: Virgil Adamson (At first sight) X OC Amelia
Warning: +18 MDNI, Angst, Blindness (Regaining sight and loosing it), Sensual Massages but that is who Virgil is, I think that's it! If I missed anything let me know.
Word count: ~4.9k
A/N: I love Virgil Adamson and At First Sight, but I really dislike the love interest. Soooo I did something about it!
A/N: I know that At First Sight is such a obscure movie that has a small fan base but this is for you guys! Let me know if you want more, my inbox should be open.
Summary: Amelia was Virgil's rock. They relied on each other to survive in such a weird world. When a woman shows up in Virgils life and offers him the gift of sight a wedge is driven between them.
The town was small, sure, but that’s how Amelia had always liked it. She had always preferred the way the world seemed to slow down when you got into that little town square. It wasn’t where she had grown up, although it would have been a perfect place to. No, Mia grew up in Norfolk Virginia. Victim to the Appalachian accent and the busy pace of life her family had.
It wasn’t a bad life, not in the slightest, she loved her childhood, it was just
fast. She felt like as she grew up she had lost touch with how to properly slow down. After graduating college with a hospitality degree Mia found herself up north, an internship with a nice hotel outside of New York City. The hotel in the small town.
Sleepy Hollow was the perfect place for her, what started as a 1 month internship turned into a job as the head receptionist and 4 years dedicated to that town. It wasn’t just the place, it was the atmosphere, the seasons, the people. It was him. Virgil Adamson was the people, the heart of the town. The kindest soul anyone could have ever imagined. Amelia was just lucky to work with him.
Well they didn’t really work together, he was the hotels masseuse, they had become close over the years though. She’d always keep an eye on him, and he’d keep an ear on her.
The bitter chill had started to set in, letting everyone know that it would be a longer winter than normal. Amelia’s eyes were focused on the scuffed up hockey stick as it slid along the smooth tile of the foyer, occasionally getting stuck in the grooves for a split second before continuing on it’s path, swinging back and forth. Sure, he had been walking the lobby for longer than she had, but, it didn’t mean he couldn’t fall. People were unpredictable walking around and Virgil was too prideful to bring his cane to work.
“Excuse Me. I have been standing here for 2 minuets and you have yet to even greet me.” A particularly cold looking woman, bundled in a parka stood dead in front of her on the other side of the desk tapping her foot.
“Oh, my apologies ma’am, I must have been distracted, so many guests in and out today I was trying to make sure everything was running smoothly on my mental checklist.”
Lies, You are watching him.
“Aaa- I don’t need to hear your excuses. I need you to get me checked in.”
“Yes of course, right away.” Fingers tapping away at the keyboard Amelia may have been physically going through the steps to check the rather unpleasant guest in, but she mentally was scolding herself for being so distracted. She could go visit Virgil later when she was doing her rounds. It was her job to be present with the guest no matter how irritating they may be.
At around 11 Mia made her way to the concierge table, Lilliana worked as a median between the guests and all the activities the hotel offered. “Hey Lil how’s your day been going?” Mia asked dropping into the chair in front of Lilly’s desk.
“I rather not even begin to tell you, this one lady is being a pain in my-“ she paused seeing the manager across the room and realized she shouldn’t be talking like this in earshot of any guests. “You know what.”
“Was she wearing a parka with blue nails?”
“Yeah how did you know?”
“Trust me, we are well acquainted.” Mia winked stifling a laugh before shooting a curious look at her friend leaning over the table.“Can I sneak a peak at one of your books real quick?”
Lilly furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, “Sure, which one?” She pulled a rather large binder out from under her desk opening it and glancing through the tabs. “Massages” Lilly didn’t need any more explanation, wiggling her eyebrows as she flipped to a time slot page.
“You just want to know if Virg is with a client right now don’t you?” Her voice was singsongy and teasing, it did nothing but cause Amelia to smile.
“Yeah, I do, I want to see how his day is going. I had to cancel our weekly dinner Tuesday because of a appointment so we need to reschedule.”
Lilly just nodded idly dragging her finger down the page until she reached the 11 O’clock time slot. “He’s open till 11:45 or so.” “Perfect thank you.” Pushing herself up from the table Amelia shot and apologetic looking smile seeing a particular familiar guest and her parka on her way over.
Disappearing into the back halls of the first floor, the ambient sounds of guests talking and shoes on the floor began to fade, and as Mia neared the massage room where Virgil spent his days she could hear soft relaxing music being played.
Perhaps the music he used while he worked on his clients. It certainly did set a warm welcoming mood, lord knows that you’d need it in a massage room. Especially because most of the clients were getting fully undressed. It was hard for her to imagine getting undressed for a massage, at least it was Virgil, but many of his clients had no clue.
As she neared the doorway the smell of vanilla and cinnamon became more prominent in the air. Mia took a deep breath of it as she came around the doorway, knocking on the frame a couple times looking around. “Virg? You in here?”
“Yeah I’ll be right there.” Virgil’s calm and collected voice was muffled, curious as to where it came from Amelia walked in farther sitting on the edge of the table. From the deep storage closet of the room Virgil finally appeared holding a unlit candle in his hand. “Sorry, I was grabbing a new candle for my next client, just something they get to choose to make the experience more customizable
this one smells like Lavender and breeze, though I can’t say I know what breeze smells like.”
Mia grinned quietly “Oh I love lavender, it’s my favorite type of flower, just absolutely gorgeous, rolling fields, the bumble bees and the smell just engulfs you, it’s incredible.” She closed her eyes imagining a field of lavender that was near where she had grown up.
Finally shaking her head and coming back to reality Mia cleared her throat. “Oh, uh I’m here because I wanted to come in and apologize. I really am sorry that I canceled dinner Tuesday on such short notice. I hope you didn’t have anything prepared yet, Dr. Mitchell had called me and told me he could get me in for that follow up on my carpal tunnel syndrome. He told me that if it got worse I should come in, and it’s been flaring up recently.”
“Don’t worry about it Ames, really. Your health is more important than a dinner, besides Jessie very much enjoyed your serving of dinner.” There was a long breath of air out Virgils nose before his laugh became audible but his smile was present the entire time. “What did Pete say about your hand? I know he’s a doctor but sometimes I wonder if he’s just telling me what I want to hear.”
Amelia watched as Virgil found his way to the small table by the window where the other candle was lit. He skillfully felt along the splintered wood until he met the base of the candles jar. Bringing it to his face he gently blew on it till he smelt smoke. “Well he said it hasn’t gotten worse, I just agitated it with all the extra work from the winter rush.”
Virgil reached for the lid to the candle in his hand screwing it on. His head stayed on a 45 degree angle away from Amelia, it had become rather normal for them now, Mia had learned that it was because he could listen better that way.
The amount of things he could read without even looking at her had her in awe every time. From knowing she had taken a double shift from the way she shuffled down the hallway, or that she had been working with rather difficult guests from the way she exaggerated her words. It was as if he could hear each of her thoughts as they passed through her mind.
“So you just need to loosen those muscles up a couple times a week, they get too tight and that’s what causes the pain is spasms.” He placed the cooling candle onto the table again making his way towards Amelia reaching out placing a hand on her shoulder sliding it down her arm till he could get his fingers under her elbow. Guiding her arm up gently Virgil took her hand in both his hands and gently started to kneed at her palm, gently working his way down each of her fingers.
His touch was soft, there were callouses on his hands but you could tell it was from his cane, the rest of his hand was utterly soft.
Amelia had to fight from closing her eyes, it had been such a long day already she didn’t want to have to go out and face the rest of her day. The massage felt so good reliving her of the dull pain that had been lingering in her hand for the past couple days.
“So, the rain check on dinner, how about we cash that in tomorrow? We can go to Charlies diner after work? I’ll pay, I owe you because you bought dinner for Tuesday.”
“Ames you didn’t even eat dinner Tuesday that doesn’t count as me buying you dinner if you never ate it. But okay, Dinner at Charlies after work sounds good. Your hand feeling any looser?” His hands moved to focus on her wrist, the base of her palm.
“Ah~ Virg” Mia’s voice came out a small cry flinching under his thumbs pressure on the tender area sho stood up in reaction to the pain.
Virgil immediately stopped loosening his grip on her hand but not letting go pulling her closer feeling her move. “Are you okay?” He asked a look of concern spread onto his face. They were much closer now than they were before, Virgil could feel Amelias breath on his cheek, a shiver went down his spine.
“Yeah I’m fine, sorry about that I wasn’t expecting it to be that sensitive.” In the moment Amelia couldn’t have been more grateful that Virgil couldn’t see her, she had turned pink at the embarrassing situation. The room was dim without the candles, and the music was still playing in the background. The proximity wasn’t helping either. Virgils cologne was invading Amelias mind and it became intoxicating.
Don’t you dare do something you will regret.
The door opened and a tired looking brunette stepped in wearing a sweatshirt and long pants, “Oh I’m sorry, am I too early?”
Immediately Mia backed up, Virgil’s fingers lingering on her hand for a moment. “No, Not at all.” She turned her attention back to the man “Ill get out of your hair
 thank you Virg.”
The masseuse had made quick work to busy himself after letting go of Mia’s hand, gracefully finding his lighter and waving it around in the new candle until it was lit.
“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, and if I don’t, 4 pm, corner booth, don’t be late.” Amelia shot Virgil a playful wink even though he couldn’t see it.
“I wouldn’t miss it Ames. See you then.”
—____—-____—___—___—___—___—___
Clocking out had never been such a long process. Hearing the final manual click of the puncher Amelia was out the door. Would it have been faster to walk? Yeah probably, but she had to move her car so she could take it home afterwards and it had been pouring rain all day. The bells jingled on the door of the diner as she pushed it open.
“Mia!” A gruff voice came from the window into the kitchen. Charlie, a rather stubby heavy set man stood on the other side waving “I’ve got your usual on its way, Virgil is in your guys normal booth, he ordered for you.”
The diner had become her favorite place to go to eat in town, the best milkshakes and burgers, couldn’t beat it. “Thanks Charlie, I’m paying for Virg tonight so don’t let him do that slight of hand nonsense he likes to do when it comes to the check.”
Mia made her way around the pie display and found her eyes laying on Virgil in the booth fiddling with a couple of packets of sugar and creamer, making a little stack. The stress from the long day melted away with every step as she got closer to him.
Virgil had become so much more than just a coworker who she liked to bother, or a friend who was always around, he was
well it was just hard to explain. He made Amelia feel like she was doing a good job balancing the neverending pile of things on her plate.
“Hey, how was your day today I noticed you had the afternoon blocked off?” She asked sitting into the booth across from him.
“It was amazing, that’s right! Okay so, I had a girl yesterday come in.”
A girl? Something started to wriggle in her throat, swallowing it down she egged him on “A girllll oooOOoooh, do you have a girlfriend now?”
Why did saying that make her mouth dryer?
“Well no, its not like that, yet. She was getting a massage and fell asleep kinda, well she cried first but that’s a little personal. Anyway, she fell asleep so I just blew out the candle and left. She was my last person till 6 pm so I gave her some space.” He seemed so eager to tell her all the details, how could Mia not listen in awe of the man in font of her. She adored hearing him so excited about something, like a puppy bounding around when their owner gets home from a day of work.
“That’s a new reaction to your magic hands.”
“Yeah but that’s not the end of the story, so she woke up and found me when I was getting on the bus to go home for lunch, she didn’t realize I was blind Ames. She didn’t notice!” He broke out into a quiet laugh as the plates of food were set down in front of them by one of the waitresses.
“Thank you” Mia turned her attention from the waitress “I-Is that a good thing Virg?”
“Well, yeah, only because, she didn’t run afterwards. We actually met up today, I showed her around town, well
I walked her around town, she really went sight seeing herself. But it started to pour and we went inside the old mill house. Listened to the rain. It was nice.”
Amelia sat in silence watching Virgil recount his days events, eyes moving as he talked but never focusing on one single item. It’s how Mia knew when he was excited. If he didn’t have his glasses on and he was excitedly talking about something his eyes would search for phantom things. “That sounds really amazing virg-“
“Amy just gets me, she doesn’t see the cane, she sees me like no other girl ever has, she sees me like I can see.”
Ouch. Amelia’s chest tightened slightly as he spoke, what about her?
The years of walking with each other to the supermarket to make sure Virgil got his favorite brands, watching hockey on the couch and Virgil having to explain the rules 3 times over, it all meant nothing? She didn’t try to pretend to not see Virgil's disability
she tried to embrace it. “That’s great Virg.”
—___—___—___—___—___—___—-__—___—___—
Months gone by and it was like Amy had taken every free space in Virgil’s mind. Weekly dinners turned into monthly lunches only on Wednesdays though because that’s when Amy had to be in the city for meetings. Virgil had been to the city a couple times too.
Knock Knock
Who was that?
It was 9 in the morning on the one day Mia had off. Dragging herself off the couch where she had fallen asleep watching TV the night before Amelia pulled open the front door to come face to face with Virgil. He was holding a small bag in his hand.
“Virgil? What-“ she yawned quietly “what are you doing here?” she was in rather unflattering PJ Pants and a tank, not that it mattered what she looked like.
“Hey, I uh, I wanna talk to you real quick. It’s kinda important, did I wake you up?” He could tell from the general sluggishness of her voice and the more apparent accent.
“Yeah but its fine, I needed to get up anyway. What’s up?” Amelia stepped aside gently placing her hand on Virgils arm so he could tell he could walk forward into her home. He had been there many times before, so he had a clear mental map of where things were but she still led him to the couch to sit down.
“Well, Amy reached out to a doctor and
well, they think they can do a surgery to recover my eyesight.”
The news hit Amelia like a cold glass of water. “What?”
“Yeah, it’s an experimental surgery but they said it could give me my sight. Besides, if it doesn’t what’s the worst that can happen.”
His seemingly indifferent shrug made Amelia's emotions bubble over in rage. “What’s the worst that could happen?! I don’t know, how about excruciating pain for the rest of your life?” Her outburst clearly was a surprise to Virgil.
“I thought you’d be excited, I’ll be able to see.”
Amelia paused her pacing and stood in the middle of her living room looking at Virgil “But, aren’t you happy with yourself as you are? Is it really worth the risk?” She asked realizing her previous overreaction.
Now it was Virgils time to let his emotions get the better of him. “It will finally make me fucking NORMAL Amelia!”
Had he ever called her by her first legal name?
“That’s all anyone’s ever wanted me to be! My parents, My sister, everybody in town, the staff at work, I know how much of a burden I am. This is my chance to fix all that.” Virgil had started to shed tears, angry tears. “Can’t you just be happy for me?”
Well fuck.
It felt like someone had thrown a rock at her glass house then stabbed her with a shard. That’s all she had ever wanted, was for him to be happy, and perhaps she had overlooked just how desperate Virgil was to be normal.
Breaking down Amelia managed to hold back audible noises of her pain. Sitting down in her chair she looked at Virgil.
“You were never a burden, never. You were the amazing guy who lived down the street, the guy who taught me about hockey even though I never understood. The coworker I want to eat lunches with, and the person I want to go to the store and eat dinner with at night. So many of my damn habits I consider a gift because I picked them up from you.”
She took a breath, wiping some tears with her palm. “Sometimes when I’m home alone I find myself doing the stupid little victory dances you do when your happy, or talking out loud when i'm in a dark room to hear where I am. Being blind is not what defines you, but it is what made you the amazing person you are Virgil.”
Amelia finally took a long shaky breath in, only now letting Virgil hear how close to sobbing she was. “But your right, what’s the worst that can happen. If it is going to make you happy, I support you.” She murmured standing up.
From outside there was a long honk “Come on Virg lets go.” It was Amy.
“I should go.” Virgil hummed standing up, it was clear by the look on his face he didn’t know how to react to the overload of information she had dumped on him. “I guess
I’ll see you around.” He made his way towards the door.
Amelia grabbed a throw pillow hugging it to her chest for any bit of comfort it could offer, watching as Virgil left. It felt wrong, letting him leave on such a bitter note, but she just didn’t know what she could do. Virgil deserved to see the world in vivid color, to see everything the world had to offer. But she just couldn’t imagine if something went wrong, left Virgil in excruciating pain or worse, it didn’t work at all. That would crush him.
—___—___—___—___—___—___—___—
Months had come and gone once again, this time, no contact. Like the outburst they had was a final factor in communication.
From what Jennie had told her, and everything she had seen on the news, Amelia knew it worked. Virgil could see, and was living his life to the fullest, experiencing everything with his girlfriend Amy. It crushed Amelia, knowing that he was so happy in New York City without her.
Meanwhile, the hotel hadn’t been the same since he left. The halls in the morning felt colder, no more cinnamon candles, or sounds of hockey sticks dragging along the tile. What crushed her even more was the sour note they were left on.
Was Virgil still mad at her for not supporting it from the start? Maybe he had forgotten about her completely. Perhaps it was for the best, he and Amy seemed happy. She didn’t need to be showing up and ruining things farther, although, she had thought about going to the city a few times.
—___—___—___—___—___—
It had been almost a year, and the miracle of the blind man who could see fell from headlines over time and many forgot.
Not Mia, though she tired her best to.
She did her best to move on, made new friends, embraced her small town more than ever.
April, the first day of sun in weeks, the snow was still on the ground but it was warm. Amelia was pulling some muffins from the oven when her phone rang. “Hello?”
“Amelia, it’s Jennie, I’m calling about Virgil. He’s gone missing, he just up and left New York City. No one knows where he is.”
Mias heart started to pound, why would Virgil do that? He was a smart and reasonable man, why would he do something so utterly idiotic. “Why are you telling me? I haven’t seen him since the damn surgery-“
“Because your boss at the hotel called me, said they saw him in town.”
He was in town? She had to talk to him, it may be the last conversation he wants to have in the moment but, she needed to see him. Apologize, she didn’t realize how badly she needed him in her life, and the past year had been proof. Grabbing her coat she put the phone back on it’s receiver, yanking on the doorknob causing the door to fly open.
Virgil stood directly in front of Amelia, hand up poised to knock on the door that was now open. Silence engulfed them both.
He wore a brown sweater over a light blue button up and kaki slacks. In his hand, brown paper surrounding a bundle of lavender tied off by some twine. Silence loomed over them, his mouth was slightly agape, Amelia on the other hand had a few choice words to say and she wasn’t going to hold back.
“Virgil how could run off like that! Your sister just called me, she was worried sick, everyone was! You can’t just run away after a fucking year and show back up here and expect everyone to go on about their business!”
For a long moment there was silence as Amelia waited for some excuse from him. Finally he opened his mouth, a lopsided grin becoming undeniable at that point.
“I never realized that there was a beautiful face to go along with your beautiful personality.”
No words had ever been uttered with such genuine weight behind them. Virgil's eyes traced Amelia's face for a long while as Mia sat in shock unsure how to handle the situation. His eyes
they were moving in a pattern, he was looking at her. He could see her. For the first time in the 5 years they had known each other, he was able to see her face.
“Virg I-” She couldn’t get another word out of her mouth before Virgil piped up again.
“I know that it looks really bad, dropping off the map and showing up here. I had an epiphany though. I was with the girl who made me into who she wanted. Not the girl who wanted me for me. Those words you said the night of the argument
the last time we were together, they’ve stuck with me. I couldn’t shake them. I still can’t, because I realize now what they meant. I know it’s far too late to amend any of the mistakes I made but I want to start with one. The mistake of leaving you.” He whispered holding the bundle of lavender out.
“For you, Your favorite. I was driving here, and I had to stop, there was the most incredible sight I’ve ever seen. Just rolling purple as far as I could see. It took me until I got out the car to realize what it was. I understand why it’s your favorite, It was an experience I wish I could have seen sooner.”
Amelia took the bouquet into her arms for a moment before discarding them onto her door side table on the porch throwing herself into Virgil's arms. Damn it, as much as she wanted to be mad, to scold him more, to tell him that it would take more than just a bouquet of flowers and some sweet words to make up for the year he had avoided her, but she couldn’t she just let the silence between them say it all.
He didn’t seem to want to let go either, holding her against his body, one arm pressed against her back to keep her close, the other one lost in her hair. His eyes trying to memorize the way it looked as it flowed over his fingers. “I wish I would have seen what was infront of me sooner, I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry, your here now, and we have until forever to make up for the time we lost.” Amelia pulled back from the hug glancing up to give Virgil a warm smile.
He tried to mirror her movement but his smile didn’t match his eyes. His hand slid from her hair to her jaw, the pad of this thumb slowly tracing her cheek bone. “Ames
theres something you need to know. When I agreed to the surgery, the doctor made it clear that he wasn’t sure that it would be permanent. He wasn't sure if it would last 10 years, 10 hours, or 10 minutes. If it even worked in the first place.”
A knot formed in the back of her throat, Amelia squeezed Virgil's arm in hopes he’d burst out laughing and say it was some form of cruel joke. “Are you saying that it’s fading?” Her voice was broken, trying so desperately to keep it together.
“Hey, no, don’t cry, Ames.” He whispered his other hand reaching up so he now had a hold on both sides of her face. “Breath for me. It’s okay, I got to see some of what the world had to offer, and now I get to see your face, I’m okay with whatever comes next.”
Of course Virgil would be okay with whatever happened, he never was one who liked confrontation. “I just
it’s not fair, you haven’t gotten to see everything yet.” She whispered quietly holding onto virgil's forearms to steady herself.
“I’ve gotten to see natures leaves changing, and the skyline of New York, and a rangers game. I saw a rolling field of lavender as far as the eye can see and the ocean. I’ve gotten to see you though, the most beautiful smile, your eyes, I swear I will never forget your face as long as I live. I’ve spent the past 5 years wondering how the sweetest desk manager and friend I could have made looked, wondering if your lips were soft, or if your eyes sparkled, and now I have my answer.” He whispered guiding her chin up ever so gently, lips meeting. His eyes fell closed for what seemed like the first time since he laid his eyes on her, for a moment everything was perfect. He had her, and that is what mattered.
Amelia broke the kiss for a moment pressing her forehead to his, “Virgil
let’s go see everything you could have ever wanted to, normal life can wait till we are ready.” She said taking his hand in hers intertwining their fingers.
“So tell me, what do you want to see?”
“I want to see you.”

Me at my mutuals about Val Kilmer.
@valmare @sarahsmi13s @gothidecorem @callsignthirsty @radical-sky
making friends via fandom is inherently hilarious because in many ways it's like a regular friendship and sometimes you'll share stuff that's going on in your lives and offer support and talk about food or pets or random cultural stuff because you live on opposite sides of the damn planet, but also some of your interactions are like "hello beloved friend whom I cherish deeply, I have brought you a deceptively platonic gift of lovingly crafted star wars porn"

“Would you still love me if I was a worm?”
Ana trailed after Tom down the hallway of their apartment. Her PJ pants brushing the floor because they were simply a little big but tied well around her waist. The smell of Chinese food permeated the walls of the kitchen from their night in after Tom’s long day at work. He had canceled dinner plans because there was an incident on base he had to take care of.
Ever the amazing boyfriend, he picked up takeout on the way home and you two enjoyed it while talking idly on the couch for a couple hours. “If I say yes will it stop your essay of questions?” He groaned throwing open the door to their room, pealing off his muscle tank he had worn home, it was the only thing he had in his locker that day. His clothes somehow made it into the hamper before he climbed into bed, refusing to let the room be messy, it was Tom after all.
“I’m not answering that question until you answer mine.”
“Fine, yes Annie, I’d still love you if you were a worm. You happy now?”
Ana couldn’t help but grin in triumph as she crawled into bed next to her boyfriend. “Yes I’m ecstatic, thank you.” Placing her head on his chest she wiggled around to get comfortable, a calm silence washing over the couple.
The only thing Tom could hear was the quiet sound of music coming from their neighbors apartment and the sound of two breaths becoming one. He loved the silence, it was such a complete 180 from his every day life, work was always loud, at home, with ana, he got to just enjoy quiet.
“Tom?”
“Yes dear?”
“Do you think
that if we didn’t meet how we did
if we didn’t meet in this time, we would have ever found each other?” Ana half expected to hear a groan because of her silly questions, but was surprised to be greeted with silence, followed by Tom moving under her, sitting up on one elbow.
“I’m not sure
you mean like, if we would have met in a different time?”
 “Yeah, like 1944
do you think we would have gotten together?”
After another long moment of silence Tom pursed his lips, something Anna could barely see through the dark. “I’d like to think so, I think that no matter the year, place, or circumstances I would always fall for those beautiful green eyes.” He gently placed his hand under her chin lifting her lips to kiss her, “Now, shall we get some sleep? Mav got on my last nerve today and I would like to drift off to sleep with my beautiful girlfriend before I spend any more brainpower on his idiocy.”
Laying back into the pillow with Ana on his chest there wasn’t much time before Tom was out cold. Annika on the other hand, laid in complete darkness, staring at the shapes of picture frames in the dark wondering
 What If.
Tumblr media
“I swear I’ve never wanted anything more in my life Erik. Give me another chance.” Ana stared dead on, serious as a heart attack. She’d never get another chance like this, never be this close again.
“Absolutely not! Your gonna spend our budget to get home if you keep trying. I’m not convincing the milk man to give us a ride again, that was fucking embarrassing Annika.” A rather tall man stood next to her, they looked almost identical aside from his stronger bone structure and lack of freckles.
Both had rather piercing eyes and unruly brunette almost jet black hair, Ana at least was able to pull it back into an updo as her hair was long, Erik was only able to work with what he had, a brush and water. The lack of gel paired with his goofy grin and inability to choose a good outfit for the life of him, he looked like a news boy on the side of the road hawking headlines, maybe the newsboy hat would do his hair some good.
In reality though Erik wasn’t the one hawking the headlines, he was writing them. Just starting to at least. Stuck reviewing vaudeville shows for just enough money to keep him and Ana fed and get his name in the Byline.
“Come on Erik! Once more, that’s all and I’ll never ask for anything ever again.” She finally broke the intense thousand yard stare to look at her brother.
“Ana what even is that thing? Is it worth it? Is it worth having to walk all the way home?” Was it? Probably not, but Ana was determined to prove to her brother that she could do it. She nodded, taking the coin from his hand holding it out for the man behind the table.
“I was starting to think you weren’t gonna make a choice.” The man murmured handing her 3 rings. “Have at it little lady.”
Ana glanced from her brother to the nondescript animal plush hanging on the tent. “Your coming home with me
” She murmured reassuring herself before tossing the first ring, it bounced off the top of the coke bottles before ending up wedged between two of them. “Damn”
Throwing the second one significantly harder out of frustration, the ring hit a bottle then the back wall and flew back towards them, smacking Erik in the shoulder before falling to the floor.
“Ouch!” he complained quietly, watching as the barker got distracted flirting with some blonde bimbo, bending over Erik snatched the ring from the ground passing it back to Ana. “Take another shot, what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Her brother winked, a lopsided half playful grin was on his face, it met his eyes, that’s what told Ana it was genuine. She had learned to read her brother like a book after years of watching him lie, and laugh, and play around.
Tossing the ring again it bounced passed the playing bottles and instead miraculously landed on the barkers actual bottle of coke. Perhaps it was because it was an actual size to fit in the ring. “I did it!” Annika squealed jumping up and down in excitement, the barker turned around and looked at the two.
“That doesn’t count, its filled with coke and it’s mine, it isn’t an in play bottle.” Looking for any reason to contest the man’s rule Ana slouched quietly thinking.
“It’s still a bottle aint it? Just give her the damn
whatever the hell that thing is and we will get out of your way.” Erik reasoned standing up straight, Erik wasn’t tall by any means, only resting at about 5’ 11. He was broad though, their uncle owned a moving business and Erik was always in there helping move inventory. In school, he was apart of the rugby team which helped build muscle, it was his favorite thing to do at school besides anything to do with writing.
“Fine, I don’t wanna see you two again though.” He murmured pulling what was now a badly designed teddy bear of the hook handing it to Ana who immediately clutched it to her body and gave him a stern nod turning away taking Erik’s arm to leave before she broke out into laughs.
“I can’t believe that worked.”
“It worked but not without burning the bridge of playing that game again
Come on Ana, I’m starving I want to get food.”
“Are you kidding me Tommy? You can’t seriously tell me that you haven’t used the uniform to get at least one girl. I haven’t been able to keep the girls off me.” Bill walked through the crowd his hand firmly placed on Tom’s shoulder.
“Well not all of us joined up with the intension of getting laid as many times as possible before shipping off Coug.” The blonde adjusted the uniformed hat as it sat on top of his head. People all had their reasons for joining up, some it was for the glory, some it was to fight the Nazi’s, for Tom, it was none of the above. He just wanted to be apart of something bigger, he wanted to serve for a purpose, to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves. Getting recognition and women had nothing to do with it.
“I’m simply indulging myself before I go fight with a good chance of death
Fine fine, so doing a pickup game with me tonight is off the table?”
“Bill, it was never even on the menu.” Tom murmured as they made their way through the crowded pier, they were getting stares, that much Tom knew for sure. “We came here with the intension of getting to go to Coney island one last time before we left, I’m not wasting it on trying to get someone to hookup with you. You’re a lost case Billy.”
It didn’t take more than 5 minuets for two girls to walk over. “Are you two boys in the army?” They were giggling as if flirting was something one dared the other to do.
“Close, Navy, You almost had it little lady, name is Sargent Bill Cortell, it is such an honor to serve and protect when I know you pretty ladies back here are who I’m protecting.” He reached out taking one girls hand in each of his kissing their knuckles. Cougar, who had affectionately been named that by their platoon, was quite the flirt. He had a record of hitting on anything wearing a skirt, and he had the skills to as well. It was rare Bill didn’t have a girl on his arm outside of work.
Tom rolled his eyes at Bills antics. Both the girls squealed as he spoke, “I can’t imagine how brave you must be.”
“Only for you ma’am. How about you two pretty ladies and I go get some photos taken in the photo booth over there to commemorate tonight and give me something to admire while I’m over seas.” The girls swooned as Bill led them both off to the photo booth leaving Tom alone standing by as his best friend got some action.
Not that tom had any interest in getting any “Action” before he left, they would have plenty of action over seas to keep him busy and not thinking about some random girl from home.
“I thought I told you not to stick around! Get out of here!” A rather lanky barker was leaving his booth shaking a stick at a young woman who was quickly hurrying away. Ana had started to pick up her pace beyond just a brisk walk, starting to jog as the barker chased after her.
Erik's gonna be so pissed at me.
Taking a turn between two tents Ana thought she was safe, hiding from view of many prying eyes. “I thought I had told you to scram from my game. And where’s that big spender of a-“
“Darling, I turn around for 20 seconds and your gone! You can’t go running off like that. I thought we were going to get some popcorn?” Tom leisurely strolled down the small alley the tents had formed, one hand in his uniform pocket, getting in-between the barker and Ana. “Is there a problem?” He asked the man once making sure that he was between the two bodies glancing back and forth between them.
“Your with her? But I could have sworn she was with a brunette-“
“Well I would certinaly hope not, especially not on my last night state side.” Tom shifted his gaze to Ana and shot her a Roll with it look.
“Of course not, Why would I want to spend my night with anyone else.” She moved up linking an arm in Tom’s, “Now if you’ll Excuse me sir
we have a night to enjoy.” Tugging Tom out of the tight spot there was nothing but a shocked look on the barkers face, he looked dumbfounded.
Once out of ear shot she kept her voice low but leaned up to talk to the man as they walked. “I thought I was done for
 thanks.”
“No problem, he seemed like a jerk.”
For the first time Ana lifted her gaze to properly take a look at the man who had come to her rescue even if it was an unorthodox rescue. He looked like every poster for the military, perfectly pressed uniform and a charismatic smile, even if the smile looked strained. “My name is Sargent Tom Kazansky, 22nd Naval Regimend, at your service.” Tom dragged a smile onto his face trying to mimic Cougars flirting, wanting to at least be able to tell Coug that he tried.
Perhaps it was his uniform, or his effortless good looks or a strained smile, but Ana was staring much more than she had originally intended. “You got a problem soldier? Loosen up, you look like you’ve been through somethin’ awful.”
Toms once strained smile turned rather goofy as he heard her accent, somewhere between a Brooklyn slang and a nondescript European dialect, it was certainly rather interesting. “Your right your right, formalities certainly aren’t needed considering that we are already dating.” He teased wiggling his eyebrows glancing down at where her arms were hooked on his elbow.
Ana tilted her head back and laughed keeping her hands on his arm, “Well if we are dating I think we need to go get one of those couples milkshakes over by the rides, those looked real good.”
Tom seemed to agree to the idea turning them towards the rides wanting to both take her farther away from the angry barker and to get the milkshake. “So, is it fair of me to ask my girlfriends name?”
“Oh, you mean you can’t tell? Can’t see it in my eyes?” Leaning up towards top she fluttered her eyelashes gently “I’m kidding, my name is Annika, it’s a pleasure to date you Sarg.” She gave a little salute with her free hand as they walked down the crowded wooden walkway.
Annika, a pretty name, certainly didn’t fit her. Well it did! Just not
it didn’t fit the side he was seeing of her. She was wreckless and rolled with the punches, this girl looked like hell on wheels but hidden in a rather messy blanket of personality and beauty. “The pleasure is all mine Annika.”
“Was what you said true? Is tonight your last night stateside?”
“Oh- uh, well yeah it is. My best friend Bill and I were planning on spending tonight enjoying our last night of freedom but hes found himself rather occupied with some ladies and left me to rot.” His laugh wasn’t good at hiding the way he was feeling, clear he wished that Cougar had prioritized their fun together, but he couldn’t control Cougars dick. “It’s not too bad though, I was able to help you out and now were at least enjoying ourselves together right?”
As they made their way to the ordering window of the booth Tom looked to Ana for a moment nodding as if telling her to make the choice of their order. “Oh uh, your good with anything?” She whispered leaning into comment, only to be responded to with a nod, “Can I just get a strawberry shake with two straws please?”
She fumbled for her coin purse to pay but Tom had beat her to it. “Please, let me, it’s not like this money’s gonna do me any good overseas.” His grin was enough to make her heart race and she hadn’t known him for more than 10 minuets. The milkshake was brought to forward to the window and Tom grabbed it leading Ana towards one of the empty benches which were few and far between on the busy boardwalk.
“So, what about you, I can assume you spend your free time aggravating carnival barkers to the point of chasing you?” He took a sip of the shake and let it cool down his throat when he swallowed, a little bit of the pink resting on his lip before he swiped it away with his tongue.
“No no, as much as I wish I could say it was my full time job I can’t. I’m a secretary for the telegraph company, I’m only part time though, but I help my brother, he’s a writer for the New York Sun, just has terrible grammar.” She smiled imaging the rough drafts laying on Erik’s desk covered in red pen marks that she had left.
Stealing the cup from Tom’s hand Ana took a long sip before handing it back, stealing the cherry off the top. “Well your brother is lucky to have an in house editor. I wish I could say that my writing was good but despite my fathers constant efforts to improve my writing skills my spelling is horrid and my hand writing is illegible.” It was half a joke, his father was always trying to force him to write so it would get better but he never had anyone he cared to write to or about.
“Annika Jenson!”
Anas back immediately straightened up and she became ridged closing her eyes “Speak of the devil and he shall appear.” She whispered before shooting Tom an apologetic look. “My brother.”
Standing up she tuned around, plaid skirt flaring out slightly, a tight smile pressed onto her face. “Erik, hey, sorry I kinda ran off, I wasn’t really interested in getting hotdogs and you were taking so long in the bathroom. I wandered off and noticed my bear had a tare already so I went back to get him replaced and the ass actually chased me. Can you believe that? He had the gall to try to chase me down for asking for a different prize! Anyway Tommy here swooped in and helped me out of a tight spot.”
Erik looked like he was having none of it, absolutely fuming, he had been searching for his sister for going on 20 minuets and she was off hiding with some random guy? “Tommy huh?” He pivoted to stand infront of Tom, who stood up to greet him came to about 6 foot standing up straight, Erik was broader, more stalky, while Tom was more lean, muscular, fit. He had been through training already and was prepared for war even if he was going into the air infantry.
“You must be the writer
it’s nice to meet you.” Tom held out his hand to shake but Erik seemed like he was still rather mad. “Sorry if I don’t shake hands with the guy who kidnapped my sister.”
“ERIK.” Ana slapped Erik’s shoulder violently “I’m sorry Tom I don’t know where his manners went, mama raised us right I promise.” She shot a stink eye at Erik before pulling the note book from his pocket that she knew he always had with him. Writing something down in the notebook she ripped out the page folding it a few times before shoving the notebook back to Erik who shook his head turning to walk away expecting Ana to follow.
“We should really go though
it’s quite late and we live on the other side of town so we should really be leaving but, I hope you can find your friend, and that, you find what your looking for overseas.” Moving forward she stood up onto her tiptoes and placed a hand on his chest slipping the note into his breast pocket of his uniform before kissing his cheek. “Good luck out there Tom.”
She turned to follow her brother, and Tom wasted no time pulling the note from his pocket trying not to damage it. His cheeks flushed pink as the notes words rang in his head. Well he finally had something to look forward to.
‘I hope that when you get to where your goin’ you don’t hesitate to practice your writing skills with me. My address, send a letter when you get to your station.’

These are now cannon in my VCU (Val Cinematic Universe)
okay this started as a joke with my friend where we were saying Doc Holliday would main as Daisy in Mario Kart cause he's always saying "you're a daisy if you do" in Tombstone and it somehow evolved into me making a series of
"What Mario Kart characters Val Kilmer characters would main as"
and I had to commit to the bit so here, have these.
