JŪSHIRŌ & PROPHETIC DREAMS:
"i am the prophet with the answers you seek. time, i've unlocked it. i see past and future running free"
Tumblr media
Like I usually start these headcanon posts, this is just a warning that this will contain talk of CHRONIC ILLNESS and RELIGIOUS IMAGERY, due to the nature of Jūshirō's story and the symbolism tied into it all. Everything will be under the cut!
For context, this came to me as a result of listening to 'No Longer You' from Epic: The Musical. I see so many parallels between Tiresias and Jūshirō, as Tiresias is a figure to a ( living ) hero, guiding them to find their own path regardless of the past and future peril along it
But there's the gift of what we have going on with Jūshirō:
The prophetic dreams are a result of his coexistence with Mimihagi, as a "kami" of Soul Society and their connection to the Soul King. It's part of the price he pays from his parents' actions because "divine protection is brought to those who offer everything of themselves besides their Eye". With the promise of kamikake at some point, he's been given the chance to "see" as They "see"
Although Jūshirō's been tethered to Mimihagi since he was 3, the dreams didn't really start until he was a teenager training at Yamamoto's shinōreijutsuin, when he was learning to harness his reiryoku and become a shinigami
They're infrequent and he's not exactly sure what triggers them persay. Jūshirō used to write them off in the past as delirium induced by pushing himself to his limits physically, but when they started occurring more when he was perfectly healthy, he scrapped the theory
He doesn't get anything concrete, like the direct death of a comrade for example. It's mostly vague images flashing or pitch darkness with intense feelings. Like ancient flames burning fields, the feeling of terror, guilt, and anger from within the darkness, the destruction of buildings he doesn't recognize, etc.
Jūshirō usually keeps to himself after one of these dreams, preferring to slip out quietly to sit in nature to understand what he "saw". However, he's also accidentally spooked his subordinates a few times in doing so, looking like a ghost wandering around their barracks
The truth behind these instances is reserved for the people he trusts most ( and views to be family ): @jinjahime's Sasameki, Shunsui, and Yamamoto. There's not another soul who gets to know this... intimate part of himself. Sasameki and Shunsui especially, as his sister and brother figures, know his full thoughts and feelings on this. One way or another, he seeks them out for any insight or ease they can offer him
Needless to say, Jūshirō absolutely hates having these dreams and feels tortured and cursed by them. It's one more thing that fuels his already conflicted feelings about Mimihagi and this weird pseudo existence he has in Soul Society

hi, i'm coming back to this months later having done some research on something else completely unrelated
i'm fully convinced one of his parents is a soul society equivalent of a shugenja ( as a parallel to jūshirō's zanpakuto spirits appearing as onmyōji ). this is going to get long, so putting this under a cut!
to start off, shugendō mixes practices with beliefs in buddhism, shinto mountain worship, and japanese folklore ( yokai, oni, etc ). the purpose of shugendō is "for practitioners to find supernatural power and save themselves and the masses by conducting religious training while treading through steep mountain ranges". if you're already going ' oh no ', trust me: it gets worse. we'll come back to the religion's beliefs in a minute
there's a specific translation from the manga that describes mimihagi:
Tumblr media
it's the "indigenous heteromorphic cyclopean god" ( even though it's a mouthful, jfc ) line we're wanting to look at here. the shugendō may believe in both buddhism and shinto deities / figures, but some other key figures they believe in worship are called gongen, who are believed to be "manifestations of a buddha as japanese kami". in specific, according to wikipedia:
"a gongen was believed to be the manifestation of a buddha in the form of an indigenous kami, an entity who had come to guide the people to salvation, during the era of shinbutsu-shūgō in premodern japan"
following bleach's lore of mimihagi and other kami like them being pieces of reiō / the soul king, it follows the same imagery of someone who's become "enlightened" ( reiō ) manifesting as various kami ( mimihagi, the entity within pernida parnkgjas, the entity within gerard valkyrie ) spread about the world(s). these "gongen" are considered "dual entities", housing both a "buddha" and a "kami", which tracks with how these entities are their own beings while still being a part of reiō / the soul king
here's where it all connects back to jūshirō and his parents
i firmly believe any knowledge that reiō / the soul king and mimihagi were connected as dual entities was a rumor at best, a wild belief that was rejected by most worshippers at worst until jūshirō was old enough to understand just what sort of "kami" was bound to him. even though one of his parents was the soul society equivalent of a shugenja, they both believed in mimihagi and underwent a long, arduous journey into the middle of nowhere to a shrine to worship said kami. and further more, they both equally risked said long, arduous journey with their dying son, hoping for the kami they worship to take pity on their worshippers' child and save him from death
i've been doing more research into japanese religion and mysticism overall and it's hit me that where jushirō embodies onmyōdō beliefs, his parents and grandmother embody shugendō beliefs. i'm sitting here with my book open like

adding tiresias from greek mythology to my list of character inspo for jūshirō has been a mistake that's led me to thoughts of how it'd be kinda sick if he had prophetic dreams. ever since the thought crossed my mind, i've been sitting here like

hierophant and the world for the tarot hc meme!!!
tarot headcanon questions!
05. the hierophant: what are your muse’s morals / ethics? do they follow their moral code strictly?
Following similar patterns in his symbolism, there are 2 key things that are reflected in Jūshirō's morals and ethics: his role as a captain in the Gotei 13 ( how he personally follows tradition, honor, and duty ), as well his deep attachments to people ( how he believes in the power of the individual and the ability to change ). He's maintained his role, despite his health, for a long time for a reason; he gets shit done and he's not afraid to act when a situation calls for it. But he's also a mediator, a calm and serene figure to those seeking refuge. He understands the depths of emotions, of the heart, of the soul, and of the spirit that drives people to action
His morals and ethics ultimately reflect the good he wants to do by others. He doesn't want to see others suffer how he's suffered and continues to suffer. Be it by listening to their sorrows or helping inspire them to change and grow, he's devoted to the people around him. He seeks to preserve life where he can even if it means choosing the difficult path. However, if he has to raise his blade, he does so knowing it's the last option available to him. If someone is truly heinous and is incapable of changing for the better, he'll act as a captain of the Gotei 13 would and terminate the enemy
The situations with Kaien's death and Rukia's execution are excellent examples of both sides of the scales, where he acts like a Captain and makes a call befitting his role ( out of mercy and fatherly / familial love for Kaien ), and when he tosses that duty aside to preserve life ( especially the life of someone under his command he deeply cares about ). Jūshirō follows his moral code strictly, regardless of the consequences it can have against him
21. the world: is there one thing in life that your muse must accomplish? what will they do when they complete that goal?
This man has one (1) goal: to see the younger generations surpass himself and the other elder captains to bring about true change in Soul Society. It's been a long time coming, especially with the way the Gotei 13 clings to stagnation through tradition. Mind you, he's just as guilty in upholding that stagnation with a slow approach to change and a difficulty to see beyond honor and duty as the other elder captains are
He understands that he, likely, won't be around to see the end result, but it doesn't mean he isn't filled with pride seeing them steps ahead of where he was at their age. If it were up to me, after Rukia surpassed him, Jūshirō would've been able to retire and live out the rest of the time he had left doing whatever he wanted, but no, Ti.te Ku.bo thought that was a stupid idea

With her final words—The words she always said whenever she had to leave the barracks early, leave to go back home, to the Rukongai—Where she was supposed to be safe—Kisuke leaned against the table her body had been on prior, nothing left of her except her words echoing in his ears. お先に失礼します。 Excuse me for leaving ahead of you.

pay no mind to sasameki visiting jūshirō and giving him a kiss on the cheek 🥰 (she can only reach when he's sitting)
The captain fails to keep a smile from rising on his face at the affection. Green eyes turn from the mount of paperwork up to meet his sister's gaze. They've been in each other's lives for a millennia and even now, Jūshirō is grateful for Sasameki's presence here. Her warmth radiates in the hollow room, alleviating the loneliness that this bedridden isolation brings.
Tumblr media
A hand reaches out to take Sasameki's before her departure, a gentle kiss pressed to her knuckles. It's not enough, in his mind, to truly show his appreciation. But it's all he can muster now. ❝ Thank you. ❞ Jūshirō speaks quietly as he lets her go. ❝ The next time I see you, I'll have something for you. Consider it a token of my appreciation for you and our friendship. ❞
