Movement Statement
- my three electives were ceramics, painting and print making.
- for my project I explored the idea of movement and music , specifically through the concertina which is the instrument I play myself.
- I started off in ceramics with mark making and looking at different ways to portray movement. From that I explored the idea of sound (sound waves) and the related movements of the concertina.
- in print I developed those ideas further looking at the idea of how sound moves to grow louder and softer, how the movement of playing the instrument affects these sounds.
- finally in paint I continued to develop my ideas and bring everything together.

Week 6
I also did the tool making / mark making workshop on Tuesday. We started off with making our own tools out of different objects, I used a variety of different things eg, sponges, sticks , wool, bubble wrap ect. I wanted to make a wide variety of tools that would all make different marks. I also wanted to try and experiment with some of my clay ceramic pieces as a tool to paint
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I experimented with my tools and the different marks I could make as well as trying to portray the different features of musical tunes through my paintings. I looked at the idea of sound getting louder ( left ) and tried to express the ideas of repetition in music ( right ). I like how these two pieces came together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also looked at the idea of the flow of music and movement. I didn’t like how this turned out , for me there’s a bit too much going on and I don’t think I was really able to get my message across. If I had more time I would definitely develop these ideas further.

Movement : Week 6 - 26th Feb
I finished off the final week of the movement project with the life drawing workshop. We worked with a model and had 20 minute blocks per pose. I started off with quick gestural sketches to get a grasp of the pose, then I spent time on longer (5/10 minutes) drawings focusing on more details like shadow and texture.

Week 5
On Thursday we developed our work further using Indian ink and water. I started out by transferring some of my gesture drawings to ink as well as looking at some primary objects to get into it he swing of things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I had a good grasp of the ink I transferred images of the concertina into ink drawings taking inspiration from Idris Kahn. I wanted to try and portray vibrations and how the concertina shakes. To do this I first brushed parts of the page in water. When the ink joined with the water it expanded to create some interesting effects.

Week 5
On Tuesday we gesture drawing. I found it difficult to first get into, but once I got the hang of it I found myself in the zone. The idea was to show the movement (gestures) of the body without getting too worried with details as we only had a few minutes for each pose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my best drawings were of the figure sitting down, I think I captured the gestures and movements best in these drawings.

Artist Research
Idris Kahn is a British artist who uses a wide range of media including painting, print and photography to create almost ethereal pieces of work. He takes an image and through the intricate process of (repetition) layering multiple images on top of each other he is able to portray places and objects with such an interesting movement and energy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of his works look like there almost vibrating , and they remind me of the mark making I did with ink back in week one during the ceramics workshop. I want to do more experimenting with ink while taking inspiration from Kahn and his way of working.

Movement : week 5 - 19th feb
Today I did the life painting workshop. As the model wasn’t available this week Sylvia ended up posing for us.
We started off by mixing our paint to make a dark shade , a mid tone and a lighter hue. We then proceeded to block in the background and foreground as well as the model keeping colour in mind. Once the background was dry we continued to work adding in more detail, while continuing to keep contrast between light and dark in mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once all our paintings were finished and dried we arranged them and hung them up on the wall. I think I did okay with my painting. It was my first time doing life painting so I did find it challenging but I enjoyed the overall process.

Week 4
My finished glazed ceramic pieces :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to try and display the sound waves to portray movement and sound. I experimented quickly with tying some of them to the frame of the bin so I could hang them and see what happens.
Tumblr media
I’m going to look into to actually producing a frame that I can hang them from.

Week 4
Today I learnt about slip printing on to clay. As I’ve already done the two printing workshops it was really interesting to use new mediums to print. I was able to take what I learnt in print about layering and negative/positive space and apply it to clay which I enjoyed.

Week 4
I also painted my sound waves with under glaze . I decided to stick with neutral colours here by using black great and white.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterwards I dipped everything in glaze so all my pieces are ready to be fired in the kiln

Movement : week 4 - 5th feb
Today I went back to ceramics to do the glazing workshop. First I got all my fired ceramic pieces ready, I was really happy with how everything came out of the kiln and I was looking forward to adding colour to my different pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started off by adding under glaze on to my concertina ceramic piece. I took inspiration from Stuart Davis and how he incorporated elements of the musical style jazz into his work when I was picking out the colours.
For me this ceramic piece reminds me of playing a slow air as I would consider the waves calmer and more ‘slow’. Slow airs always remind me of the Irish countryside, so I picked the colours that I would associate with the country that worked well together and complimented each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used a chalk pencil to make some marks to try and give another sense of movement.

Week 3
I started off with looking at pattern, as the concertina is a hexagonal shape I was able to almost interlock the shape and create an interesting design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also experimented with using both stamps and combining the shapes to make different prints. I wanted to portray the movement of sound bouncing out of the concertina as its being played.
Tumblr media
I also looked at the idea of the sound starting off really strong and how it begins to get much softer the more you move away or the further away you are from the instrument.

Week 3
I also decided to make another stamp [ using Lino ] looking at the simple shape of the side of the concertina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I liked how some of the lines around the concertina printed as well, I think they add a little sense of movement.

Artist Research
Printing the image side by side in a grid reminded me of the work of Andy Warhol and how used grid patterns. He would often repeat the same picture in one piece, differentiating between them with various colours. Basically creating his own repetitive patterns. I want to look more at pattern and how I can incorporate using my two stamps together to create more prints.

Movement: week 3 - 29th jan
I went to the relief print workshop today. We began with drawing a few small sketches to start brainstorming ideas. I want to continue looking at the idea of movement of the concertina and the sound created as a result . I ended up starting off using foam letters to make a stamp .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I began printing with my finished stamp. I realized after I started printing that the stamp I created resembled the musical symbols you would see on sheet music for crescendo and decrescendo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keeping this in mind I started to experiment using the stamp to create movement and I tried to portray sound and how it can grow from one singular source [ instrument ].

Artist Research
Stuart Davis was an American Modernist painter, best known for his brilliantly colored abstractions of jazz musicians, street scenes, and landscapes. His paintings inspired by jazz music really inspire me as I love how he takes different elements of the music style and translates it into different paintings. Often described as one of America's original art forms, jazz in particular is known for its emphasis on improvisation and disruption of regular rhythms (syncopation). It is evident after looking at his works that Davis takes these elements into account. Two paintings in particular stand out to me the most.
1 : Swing Landscape :
Tumblr media
Davis' use of colour and shape gives this piece a clear sense of energy and movement. His abstract work has a real dynamic/chaotic energy which is similar to the jazz feature of improvisation, there is almost a musical rhythm and harmony to the piece which is very intriguing.
2 : Hot Still-Scape for Six Colors - 7th Avenue Style :
Tumblr media
Davis explained, "[It] is called Hot [a jazz term] because of its dynamic mood" similar to the energy and improvisation in jazz music. The six colors "are used as the instruments in a musical composition might be, where the tone-color variety results from the simultaneous juxtaposition of different instrument groups." In this painting Davis' use of bright, vibrant colors, expressive lines, and repetitive shapes creates a visual rhythm similar to the improvisation of jazz music.
I like how you can see clear connections between the features of jazz throughout Stuart Davis' works. The jazz influence helps to create a real feeling of movement. After researching and learning more about Davis and his work I'm going to take the style of traditional Irish music [ in particular the features of different tune types for example ornamentation and free rhythm ] into account more as I continue to develop my ideas.

Week 2
Today I decided to take inspiration from my clay pieces and look at the idea of the sound and movement happening inside the concertina. I used a light box to create multiple stencils as I plan to introduce layering to my prints.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I printed out my first two layers today, I plan to add more to bring a greater feel of movement to the print.
