Visconti was Italian aristocracy, and many of his movies reflected his upbringing into one of Europe’s oldest and richest families. But he became consumed with the contrast between these powerful elite families he knew so well versus the poor and many of his films swayed between a profound understanding of these two sides of life. A movie that greatly inspired Scorsese and Raging Bull - Rocco and his Brothers is a grand emotional statement, and one of Visconti’s finest.
