Installations by Chiharu Shiota
Japanese installation artist Chiharu Shiota uses yarn to encase entire rooms in weblike structures. Like much in life, the experience of her work is poetic, suffocating, and yet strangely fragile. Her installations have appeared all over the world. In 2015, she represented Japan at the 56th Venice Bienniale.
A sight, an emotion, creates this wave in the mind, long before it makes words to fit it. —Virginia Woolf

Amazing papercut art by Mr. Riu
Japanese artist Mr. Riu creates detailed papercuts of extraordinary complexity that are all cut entirely by hand using a craft knife. His works are mostly concentrated around intricate mandalas and delicate patterns created using a zentangle technique.

Pilot Captures Amazing Thunderstorm Photo at 37,000 Feet Over the Pacific Ocean
Over the last few years we’ve seen our fair share of storm and lightning photographs, but this shot from Ecuador Airlines pilot Santiago Borja might top them all. Taken from a Boeing 767-300 cockpit at the precise moment of a lightning flash, the image captures a powerful thunderstorm forming above the Pacific Ocean just south of Panama. A difficult shot considering the turbulent weather and near pitch-dark setting.
“I like this photo so much because you can feel the amazing size of the storm and its power,” he tells the Washington Post. “But at the same time it’s wonderful how peacefully you can fly around it in still air without touching it.”
Thanks Colossal!

Faig Ahmed Weaves Modern Influences into Traditional Carpets
Faig Ahmed is a fiber artist and sculptor from Azerbaijan.  He has written about his work:
The carpet is a symbol of invincible tradition of the East, it’s a visualization of an undestroyable icon…In my art I see the culture differently. This is more of expectation of a reaction because it’s exactly the change of the points of view that changes the world.
A man can widen the borders and change them but no one has ever dare to break our spirit.  Middle East Revised
His amazing hand woven works and sculptures have been shown around the world.
There is more to art than painting.  See it all on our Instagram and Facebook.

Staying in the Moment with Street Artist Seth Malland
To see more of his art from around the world, follow @seth_globepainter on Instagram. Discover more stories from the French-speaking community on @instagramfr.
(This interview was conducted in French.)
French street artist Julien “Seth” Malland (@seth_globepainter) creates murals all over the world, often in contrast with devastated communities. “I try to use old-fashioned things in a modern way,” says Seth. “In an Indonesian village destroyed by a volcano, I created 10 paintings, mixing my contemporary style with the female refugees’ traditional art.” His work is short-lived, so for Seth, it’s all about the experience: “When you paint in the street, you can never tell if it will still be there the next day. I’m used to my work being ephemeral. The most important thing is the moment.”

What better place for brainstorming or daydreaming than a table held up by space rockets shooting for the moon? Cyprus-based furniture designer Stelios Mousarris (previously featured here) was inspired by his own childhood nostalgia when he created this awesome Rocket Coffee Table.
“I have been collecting toys and action figures and anything nostalgic from my childhood until this day. Every time I take a look at my collectibles I remember my childhood, when I used to play for hours on end without a care in the world. I wanted to recreate that feeling of carefreeness and nostalgia with the Rocket Coffee Table.”
The table was created using a combination of 3D printing, resin casting, and traditional hand-curved pieces. It’s currently available to order via Stelios Mousarris’ website.

Street Art by David de la Mano
Best known for his contrasted murals often depicting silhouettes, trees, and other monochromatic imagery. His large-scale, black and white pieces provoke reactions among the viewers and encourage their emotions and ideas through a minimalist aesthetic. David de la Mano not only observes others and their social or anti-social behaviour but explores every corner of social behaviour in his practice. Through these figures, he gives poetic visions of the human condition in society and the ways human perceive the world.
