I feel as though all the recent arcs have involved something deeply personal and traumatic for Cecil, and the way there are still loose threads in each of them makes me wonder if this is all going to culminate into something bigger.

Janet Lubelle hurting Cecil’s friends, and exposing what his husband had been hiding from him. Kevin, promising to return, bringing with him more people and baggage. Cecil’s family, his issues with Abby, with his mother, with his father, with his memory. Owls.

Everything has to do with Cecil’s relationships with other people. And that can be the scariest mystery to face. The hardest antagonist to face.

Esteban’s drawing looking exactly like Cecil’s drawing is putting me in mind of Earl Harlan and his son, who looked and acted exactly like Earl did as a child. The way the drawing turns into Cecil, his mother, and Abby, with Cecil in the place of Esteban, crawling into the tree like he did as a child. And then the way Cecil can’t remember every time Abby tells him about his father and his childhood, it just makes me think of that whole arc with Earl, where Cecil was just starting to realize just how little he remembers, where Earl couldn’t remember where he got a son at all. I doubt it’s a genuine connection, but it makes me so sad.

Oh, Cecil’s parents. Every time I think it can’t get any worse it does. Memory issues are such a common side of trauma, and although I wouldn’t take real-world psychology seriously next to Night Vale problems, I can’t help but wonder what must have happened for Cecil’s brain to force him to forget, over and over again.
