Our built environment is changing. Our natural environment is changing. Will #CapeCod change enough to lose its unique identity? It could come to pass that commercial development interests don't have the same need to have their work fit within the mystique of the region. The ever increasing need for housing continues to build a market where affordability is less important. Retail also continues to build even while storefronts continue to be vacant. Cuffy's in Dennis is a midcape retail staple. While not exactly architecturally pure, it does intend to recall the cape's seaside history. No such waterfront as this ever existed as far as I have found documented. Hopefully, the success of such a project will show other developers that sometimes corporate identity should take a backseat to local trends. Similar to Ballston Beach, Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is different every time I go out. I read that the increase in the ocean's volume is multi-factored. The glacial meltwater affects it. Also, the expansion that happens to all things as they heat plays a part. So, it's more water that takes up more space. This ocean rise is responsible for increased wave strength as George's Bank is less effective in diminishing their power when they're farther above the shelf. The dune supposedly washes away at 3 ft per year in this location. Great Island Plaza was once a quaint row of shops that looked like a mini-Main Street. Today, it is mostly vacant due to a variety of economic and social reasons. There are plans to revitalize the location, but they have not come to pass. People have a certain mental image when you talk about Cape Cod. Blight and abandoned shops don't blend with beautiful beaches and summer fun. Everywhere in the country, decisions are being made about the development of our neighborhoods that do little to improve our quality of life. Instead of economic drivers, we get more space for shops to sit vacant. The Cloudy sunset represents the turbulent phase we find ourselves in. Malls and Walmart killed Main Street. Now, the internet is killing malls and Walmart. Some people pick up and move. Some people pick up and put down a new foundation. The house two doors over was just put back down recently. There are a few ways to go on the Cape. Some people tear down and build afresh. Some people work with what's there. Others take the old and turn it into some "builder style" amalgam of whatever they saw somewhere. As a "washashore" I fell in love with this place, so I always hope that people love it as I do and don't simply do a vanity project. The Cape won't stay the same. Nowhere does. I received notification from @capecodartcenter that my #documentarylandscape photograph of #Provincetown returned to a more normal pace. What really attracted me to the scene was the red neon of #TheLobsterPot and how it illuminates all if the activity around. Across the way from it, music pumps from The Governor Bradford Restaurant. I didn't want to stop the action and make everything tack sharp. That is counter to the feeling of an evening in Provincetown! The frenetic motion of all the locals, vacationers, and part-timers. I also didn't want to crate so much blur that the people became indescript. Like all small tourist communities, Ptown had a rough time during Covid, but the people are coming back, and the music is back in the streets! The "Red" exhibit at the Art Center is from February 13 - March 11. I hope you'll stop by. The #newmoontide is the highest its been for centuries, so I had to go see it. I have not been to every interesting place on Cape Cod, but this is in a region I frequent visit, just not this location. I just drove on this road the day before and realized that someone literally paved a road through the marsh and built a bridge over one of the drainage channels. You expect this in New Jersey or New York, but not here.
