Opening scene from Yumeiro Cast Musical Rhythm Stage where Madoka finds Kyoya and Sousei ‘fighting’ in the park and… unlike in the game, they then start dancing! XD
Kanamori’s obsession with money and why it doesn’t make her a less likeable character.
So one thing about Eizouken I really want to note is about why Kanamori is a Good money-minded person, instead of a bad one. Kanamori is different than stereotypical Money Horders (i.e: Mr Krabs) and not just because she’s an anime girl and not a western animated animal.
Kanamori has good and reasonable backstory , as revealed in episode 9, to explain why she thinks of money the way she does.
However what I find most important is how Kanamori views money. Kanamori sees money as a tool. Which makes a lot of sense right? Why wouldn’t you? But the downfall of a lot of Money Centric characters is that they’re greedy. They see money as a status symbol, something that makes you better than others. And Kanamori doesn’t.
Now based on episode 9 we can assume that Kanamori didn’t have a ton of money growing up, possibly even as the show runs, so it makes more sense for her not to assign wealth to identity. It would be a conflict of character if she did. Kanamori is well written that way.
Kanamori is a very down to earth character, and a lot of her charm comes from that. She’s practical about it. No matter how much Mizusaki might want to draw everything herself, or regardless of how many ideas Midori has, if they aren’t money smart they won’t be able to get anywhere. And Kanamori knows that.
However I think the thing that really sold me, that showed that Kanamori was different, and far better then the other money minded characters I’d seen in the past is the scene at the beginning of episode 9.
She tells the Eizouken what they should’ve made, and how they could be earning more. She’s upset at the lack of money yes, but the entire time she talks about the club as a whole. ‘we’ put in enough labour to earn 1.8 million yen. I consider this a major loss for ‘our’ group.
Kanamori cares about the other members of the Eizouken and she wants them to be paid fairly. She doesn’t want to see her friends fail, she’s strict because she wants them to succeed.
She’s so much better than these other characters because Kanamori wants to pay her animators fairly. She isn’t scamming them, she isn’t exploiting them, she isn’t making them work for her.
Kanamori is in charge of the budget for the Eizouken. She could so easily pocket money and not tell them anything and the others would likely never know. But (as far as the audience knows) she doesn’t. Which means!
Kanamori isn’t in it for the money. Does she like it? Absolutely. But that’s rationalized and at the end of the day, Kanamori is fair and upfront about what she wants and why. She wants her friends to get what they deserve! For them to be successful animators, they’ve got to have the budget. And Kanamori knows how to do that.
Kanamori is the best money centric character I’ve seen in ages, and the most likeable. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
