"Extreme Risk" (S05E03, Stardate UNKNOWN) is a decent character exploration for B'Elanna as she deals with the loss of one family. But it does a disservice to her character growth and pretends she has not already adopted Voyager as her new family along the way. Her pain is real, but there are issues.

Sharing a 15-track OST I created for Janeway and Chakotay! The beginning leans into their friendship-turned-unresolved romance spanning the 7 seasons of Voyager. Last half of it draws inspiration from the Full Circle novels and Prodigy so expect heavy angst rounding out with a v emotional reunion 🥺

Heroes & Thieves by Vanessa Carlton There are two songs on this album that have me convinced Vanessa Carlton is a Star Trek Voyager fan lol. This is the first; it reminds me of a young Kathryn Janeway doing her best to keep herself and the crew moving through the mix of danger and adventure in the Delta Quadrant. Slowly, she comes to rely more and more on Chakotay to get this done.

Well, it seems like I'm getting closer somehow A flicker of peace that I've finally found Thank you for believing in me now 'Cause I do need it

Yo No Sé Mañana by Luis Enrique Building on the growing affection early in their relationship, this timeless Latin classic sings like Chakotay. Like his behaviors in Resolutions and Scorpion show, he's a man of the present. He doesn't know what the future will bring, but he is here now to fight for the present, for crew, for Kathryn.

This life is a roulette that spins endlessly I don’t know about you, I don’t know about me, How it’ll be in the end It might be worse, or it might be better Let our hearts decide, my dear, what we feel

Nothing Without You by Vienna Teng One of my favorite tracks on this list; the lyrics are haunting and melancholy, illustrating the loneliness of command. Janeway and Chakotay, as the two most authorities on the ship, come to deeply rely on each other. Who else understands choosing between no-good decisions, the burden of protecting 150 souls? But even then, there are still wounds they must heal alone, boundaries that Kathryn especially is unwilling to cross. So they don't know each other -- not in all the ways they want to.

Oh, call my name, you know my name. And in that sound everything will change Tell me it won't always be this hard I am nothing without you, But I don't know who you are. 

Please Do Not Lean by Daniel Caesar, BADBADNOTGOOD I was unsure of putting this in since it's very clearly about infidelity. But it works metaphorically; the bridge and refrain captures how Kathryn sees her relationship with Chakotay and the crew as the years go by. Starting Season 5, you see her resign herself to the sole responsibility of the Captaincy -- with all the guilt and distance that puts between her, Chakotay, the crew, and ultimately herself. She's not a dog chasing a bone, but she's trying to go home and that will always take precedence.

I know that you gon' always love me In spite of things you've seen In spite of things you've heard me say No matter how obscene If I am the sky, you are the sea Staring back at me

Climax by Usher Kathryn and Chakotay seldom confront each other head on, and even more rarely acknowledge the depth of their relationship. And that's why I love the drama of this track -- it belts the unspoken frustrations and loneliness that come with this path they're walking.

I gave my best, it wasn't enough You get upset, we argue too much We made a mess of what used to be love So why do I care, I care at all?

Limit to Your Love by James Blake The melody--the heavy chords, the repetitive lyrics--is very militant. I listen to this and think of the tension of love and duty all at once. Their eyes locking, or their breath holding just a moment too long after a biting conversation. Before a hard decision. After a harrowing ordeal. This song is a march, a dance, toeing the line between their command and personal relationship.

Like a waterfall in slow motion Like a map with no ocean There's a limit to your love Your love, your love, your love

I Miss You More by Ta-Ku I like having this follow Limit to Your Love because they share the tempo of a march. But in contrast, when I listen to this, I imagine hope and a steady warmth. Their weekly dinners, and other small moments that show they know each other so well. Their bond, so integral that Janeway almost unquestionably trusts Chakotay even when she doesn't remember him. In spite of the odds, they fall so deeply in love.

Should've Been Me by Mitski Watching Seven and Chakotay on the show is painful, but not implausible in a world where Kathryn adamantly refuses to allow herself companionship. I find the lyrics for this song fit their love triangle to a tee. And through them, you can imagine how Endgame!Admiral Janeway mentally spiraled during the last 23 years of their journey.

You wanted me but couldn't reach me So you went into your memory Relived all the ways you still want me I haven't given you what you need You wanted me but couldn't reach me I'm sorry, it should've been me

Featherstone by The Paper Kites They made it home!! They can be together!! Though--for many reasons outside of Chakotay and Seven's early relationship--they do not. In the novels (and I assume in Prodigy), they take some time to fit into this harrowed post-Dominion, post-Wolf 359 Federation. More importantly, they need time remember what it means to be just Kathryn, to be just Chakotay. Like the strum of the guitars ticking through the song, it feels like just a matter of time.

And my love is yours but your love's not mine So I'll go but we know I'll see you down the line And we'll hate what we've lost but we'll love what we find And I'm feeling fine, we've made it to the coastline

500 Miles by Journey Men I actually started this OST in 2011, after reading Full Circle by Kristen Beyer. Kathryn and Chakotay planned to meet, to finally, fully commit to a romantic relationship. But she's stopped by the Borg and forced to become their new Queen. It's been 13 years (🤯) since 2011, but I've kept the song as it also fits Chakotay disappearing without a word in Prodigy as well. After 7 years in the Delta Quadrant cheating death, it finally catches up to them. The helplessness, the defeat, the regret in both cases is simply--like this song--heartbreaking.

Time by Snoh Aalegra Listening to this, I first imagined Kathryn being overtaken by the Borg Queen, her thoughts of despair and regret as she's forced into the dark recesses of her mind. But it also fits Admiral Janeway in Prodigy. She lost her father the same way she's potentially lost Chakotay. And that grief is spilling all over this rescue mission.

Memories fading, I try to hold on When I don't know where I belong no more The sound of your voice was my all, was my home But these walls, they can't hear you no more, no more Searching high and low for peace of mind I feel I lost a piece of mine

One More Time, One More Chance by 山崎まさよし This is the only song in the OST fairly reliant on having read Full Circle. An OC and Chakotay have heated discussions about his fitness to serve in the months following Kathryn's death. And he spirals in angst in the best possible way. This song is in Japanese, but it reflects the way grief breaks Chakotay, filling him with so much anger, meaninglessness, and regret. Japanese-English translations are always such a mess but for reference, I used this.

Even when you were wrapped up in yourself That only made me care for you even more One more chance I'm stumbling in the distant memories One more chance I don't know where it is I should be going

Home by Vanessa Carlton The second song in her album that is so on the nose I swear it must be written about Voyager. While I often rue the writers for not showing us how our faves adjusted after getting back home, it was never about getting back to the Alpha Quadrant. It was always about the journey, and how this merry ship of misfits became a family. With the added piano solo at the end, it's easy to imagine a beautiful, dramatic home coming for both couples in the Prodigy and Full Circle timelines.

If I Never Knew You by Jon Secada, Shanice I can't take full credit for thinking of this song for this playlist. 16 years ago, I watched a fan vid by a veteran shipper that blew my baby!creative brain away. This song is so perfect for this unlikely, star-crossed pairing. Spare me the writing, save yourself the reading: watch that fan vid here. The quality is very early 2000s but the creative direction is perfect. Wherever you are, Belanna42 -- thank you!

Love You for a Long Time by Maggie Rogers This last song is a simple bid for a full on, no frills happy ending. I'm hoping to replace these gifs with a CANON kiss and other CANON relationship content. For now, I hope the lyrics and tune of this song inspire in you some warm and fuzzy fanfiction, as it has in me.

I really like the depth that "Drone" (S05E02, Stardate UNKNOWN) gives Seven to explore, and the introduction of One as a new face onboard Voyager. The pacing could benefit from a shorter intro to One so the finale could breathe more, but the heart is all there.

being with her mother’s family led to further disconnect,  hatred of herself,  as b’elanna felt she wasn’t klingon enough for klingons,  and she wasn’t human enough for humans.

at 17,  left for earth,  having been accepted to starfleet academy where she began to study engineering.

participated in track and field events,  was noted as being one of the best athletes of the time due to her klingon heritage  (third lung,  eight chambered heart).

due to regularly butting heads with teachers,  at the age of 19 b’elanna left the academy after three semesters.

not soon after,  was saved by chakotay which prompted her to join the maquis.

was quickly given the unofficial first officers spot aboard chakotay’s ship*,  as well as being unofficial chief engineer.

in 2371,  while fleeing a cardassian ship in an area known as the badlands,  the val jean was pulled to the delta quadrant by an entity known as ‘the caretaker’,  where b’elanna and the rest of the maquis crew were probed,  and b’elanna was held captive until she was rescued in a joint effort by the maquis crew and the crew of the federation starship voyager,  which was also pulled to the delta quadrant.

after starfleet captain kathryn janeway destroyed the caretaker’s array,  the maquis crew joined forces with the federation crew in a joint attempt to traverse the 70,000 lightyear gap between the delta quadrant and federation space.  

due to the death of voyager’s chief engineer,  b’elanna was (after some deliberation) given the provisional rank of lieutenant jr. grade and named voyager’s new chief engineer.

suffers from post traumatic stress disorder,  anxiety,  and chronic depression.

gifted engineer,  skilled athlete,  skilled at holographic programing,  excellent survival skills.

Then, in the same voice, "It's a special occasion"

She also mentions "After desert"—but at no point does she actually mention having made dessert!

And then… she walks over to him, touches him on the shoulder, and says…

"Are you ready to try some home cooking?"

Like. Excuse me? I don't care how close we are, if someone I'm in a platonic relationship with talks to me like that, I would assume it is no longer platonic.

But then! He puts down his PADD…

And the very next shot! Is it still on her table, frosted over, 15 years later!
