I recently repainted my sweet little Itsy Betsy as she’d badly damaged her last Faceup by leaping off the shelf in my doll cabinet, trying to take dolls with her. Fortunately no other doll got damaged, and it was the perfect excuse to finally repaint her as I hated the last Faceup I put on her.

I’m really happy with the changes I made this time around in painting her. She’d been based on a peacock jumping spider, so her old Faceup was really dramatic, but it didn’t suit her. Not only did I soften her look, but I put the extra painted eyes along her cheekbones, which gave me room to put eyebrows on her.

Quick before and after of her. It’s funny to me how much her body’s mellowed, she needs a good cleaning to match her head again!

Okay, as requested by @kosomolski-dolls here’s a comparison of TD Doll light and dark tan (from 2020 and 2023) to Fairyland tan from 2013. I extra chose a spare hand from my LTF that has not seen the sun or light of day ever

So it was really hard to get color accurate pictures of the hands, and in phone pictures TD Doll light tan and Fairyland Tan match decently, but to the naked eye, Fairyland is a bit darker and more reddish while the TD Doll light than leans more into a yellow tint. I’d say maybe a 70% match at best. Blushing the TD Doll light tan to match to fairyland tan wouldn’t be difficult.

Hopefully later I will drag out my DSLR to take some more color accurate pictures as I’m better at controlling the color balance on it (my phone makes everything for more yellow leaning than it is…)

Any other comparison requests?

Light tan from TD Doll is very very pale, it doesn't show much darker than an slight olive toned normal skin. In comparison, dark tan is really a rich dark color, definitely worth the $60 extra for it (light tan also comes with a $60 up charge for a 1/3+ sized doll).

I’m sorry work has been so stressful again, and that’s she bs about the tattoo artist not using your sketch as he should have!

I am glad though that you’re taking the head off my hands, I really don’t have a use for it and I’m excited to see you make it come to life with mods and painting. It’s gonna look so cool once you get to it (though the head hasn’t even arrived to me yet, hah)!

I’m crossing my fingers and toes for you that work is better this week, things can stop being a (terrible) circus…

Personal update & Doll Stuff

This week has been a wild ride and not one I'm proud of to be honest. In short: work drained me so hard I was so stressed I can barely remember what happened during work in the days I was there, I had my lunch break cut short on 3 of the 4 days I worked, one day was a 10+ hour day and phew... it was not fun at all. Then there was the issue none of my creative projects I tried my hands on worked in favor for me, everything failed. hard.

But I had a vacation day on friday and had scheduled an appointment for the next tattoo (pic on the top) but the artist came back to me on wednesday and had ditched my own sketch for a copy of a manga panel and it greatly helped for my mental health to spiral down into hell. I know a bunch of people got concerned about me, and that with a reason, I am unharmed, I just... rant a lot to fight the nasty voices.

In the end I was pissed, he was pissed but he had to correct the shit he had done to get close to my sketch again. But he had the audacity to tell me I should bring a sketch next time for him to use .... and that's all what I want to tell about this adventure. I got my tattoo, it went fast, seems to heal good so far, arm doesn't hurt.

Since yesterday my creativity is gladly back and I came up with like 20 solutions for the 10 problems I had. Hah.

Took some photos, continued with Cosplay progress and drew a bit.

And I bought a new head, or let's say the dear @izasbjdphoto told me she wanted to get the new Impdoll body but disliked the head and I noticed today, as I made sketches, that the head would fit my plans of making a Level 4 Akuma into a doll aaaaand she gladly let me have it <3 yay. Still need to figure out how to make a Level 3, that might be a sculpture again.

Also I am super hyped for the Bookfair, to see my friends again and hop into Cosplay. @adragonstale agreed to take photos of me (aka I will throw my camera at him and he is allowed to take pics whenever he likes) and I will stay at a friend's place from the wednesday before the fair ... this time without needing to go back to work, full 4 days.

I'm slowly working throught he drawing for my cosplay line up but somehow... even though I didn't have that much to do today the time slipped through my fingers.

I really hope to get to writing a hobby related blog entry again soon, but I took photos of 4 dolls this weekend, sorted stuff into the queue, into photobooks and all that... it's enough.

For next week I have a small project to finish during my lunch breaks (just some buttons and straps to be added) and I have sewing planned for the next weekend. I hope to get to cutting parts during the week that would help but it's okay if I don't get to it, I know we will be understaffed and .. yeah.

This was my outfit for Carnival last monday btw... progress is stuck somewhere in the queue. It's an Allen the Dog Kigurumi.

Iza’s Yearly Big BJD Lineup 2023 :: 64 BJDs from 81cm to 12cm (+ pets!)

I finally got around to doing my yearly big BJD lineup in December 2023, für hounding my sister for over a year to give me my two doll bodies back.

This was a 3 day ordeal (2 days of shooting images, and another day of editing, combining, and labeling), but I’m glad I got it done. In total I manually merged 12 photos.

I excluded 4 dolls, 3 have identical doubles (head and body combos) and 1 was too similar to another (only a different head, but same company head and body combo), so I didn’t feel the need to add them. I also did not add a doll I gifted my wife for Christmas as she hadn’t gotten her yet when I did the lineup. She’ll be included in next year’s lineup though!

If anybody wants specific dolls from above compared (dressed or nude), please let me know and I’ll try to do it in the next week! I can’t do the whole lineup nude as I do not have the energy nor the ambition for that. It was intensive enough to just do them dressed, because I do this without help…

Anyway, I hope this is helpful to at least one person out there!

I’m not gonna tag all the doll sculpts in the lineup, that would just take too long, but I will add a couple of companies in the tags at least.

My dear little Ursa finally got a fresh faceup after close to 10 years. I really love her vibe now, she looks so much more lively than with her old one! I also swapped her eyes for a size smaller than before.

It's amazing what a difference 10 years of practice makes! My linework got bolder and more refined/cleaner, along with my blushing. I don't just blush in fleshtones anymore, I also add blues and purples strategically to breathe more life into a doll.

After a good 9 years, Jazz finally got a new Faceup. I’ve been meaning to redo it for a while (aka years) but never had the motivation or time. But I finally had both so here she is refreshed!

A quick comparison of her current to her previous Faceup. My blushing has gotten a lot more refined and mine lines are neater and delicate. Amazing what 9 years of practice will do for a skill!

Welcome back Elyra! I bought her secondhand from a good friend of mine this past December 2023.

It's still so surreal to me that I got my dream MNF back in my collection. I had to sell my first one back in 2015 due to needing emergency funds when one of our roommates lost their job and my wife and I (back then fiancee) needed to pay bills.

I had listed a bunch of dolls, and sadly, my MNF Ryeon sold the fastest. It's a sale I have always regretted because I did really like her.

This Ryeon isn't the same one, but is from the same year, but she accepted the old Ryeon's character and name without a hitch! I'm so glad I have my kitty/fox girl back.

More blathering about the doll and such under the break

Elyra is really settling into her new shell and look quite nicely. Let me show a quick comparison of my previous to current one:

I did not ever expect to get her back, especially once Fairyland discontinued the older sculpts, so I didn't keep any of her things. So now she has a new wig, outfits, shoes, eyes, tail, and ears.

The tail and ears are now both made by me, though I do intend to re-buy the ears she had before. I just didn't want her to be without kitty/fox ears until my friend casts a few more of the old ears.

She was a fox in the past, but now I'm undecided on if she should be a cat instead. Her old tail was a big real fox tail, the new one is made of faux fur, and is fully posable thanks to the wire I put in it.

She's also good friends with little Ursa, my old DZ Shoyo, who I got around the same time as I got Elyra 1.0

My first doll project of 2024 was to re-style Ember. I made my first sewn wig from pre-made wefts and I am happy with it!

The part is messy, but it's not bad for my first wig like this. The wig cap is fabric and I bought it years ago from Angelesque still. I sewed most of the wefts on while the cap was on her head.

With her new pastel pink and mint wig, I finally kicked myself in the butt to also redo her faceup. I opted for now applied eyelashes this time because her eyes are so narrow that you can't see them at all.

This was her previous faceup and wig. The wig always was meant to be temporary, because I don't like it that much, but it was the only one I didn't feel bad cutting holes into for her horns.

The transparent horns are magnetic, but the solid ones are not, and of course they are a very awkward position making it impossible for her to wear normal wigs. Yes, the wig I sewed has holes cut into it for her horns. It's stretchy which is the only reason it goes over the horns at all.

I’m pleased to introduce Zai, doll number 51. He is Jazz’s first mate and lover, and the father of her daughter (Bonnie). I still need to get a picture of the 3 of them together…

Zai is a Dollzone Raymond-1, who took Val’s previous body (B70-003). I knew he’d fit as Raymond had been originally released with that body way back when. I got the head secondhand.

He is normal pink, though the body is the old dark normal yellow from 2015. I knew I’d have to color match no matter what head I decided on. I’ve always liked the Raymond head, just didn’t know which character he suited, but his gaunt features are perfect for Zai!

Here’s some closeups of his Faceup. I’m really proud of his scarring, I always forget how much I love the look of them. They require patience as I use the glue method to apply them, which means I gotta wait for the pva glue to fully dry before I can seal and continue…

This is really fascinating! It’s neat that you were able to find better shells for characters when one didn’t work out, and breathe new “life” into the initial doll. Samuel really looks good in his current shell(s)!!

I have a head or two to offload as well, I’m just dragging my feet on listing it. I forgot how tedious selling is, but I really should. I did intend to sell Val 2.0’s body (DZ B70-003), but I just hated the thought of listing it, so instead I found a new head for it (DZ Raymond-1) secondhand and I’m waiting for it to be shipped my way. It will need a colormatch, but I don’t mind hah.

Reshelled Dolls

Having been in this crazy hobby since May 2011, I have accumulated quite a few dolls (current count as of Nov 12. 2023: 51), but not all have stayed. Some even got reshelled.

Most of my reshelled dolls completely replaced the original shell, except in the case of Ursa and Lily. I have both of their (very different looking) shells still in my collection, with each being a version of the OC they represent. The others were mostly sold, though a few got a different character assigned to them (Val 1.0 Head = Kass, Morgan 1.0 = Viola, Sam 2.0 Head = Ivy). Basically I reshell dolls when their characters outgrow their doll avatars so to say.

I even reshelled my first doll, Melody, who had been an Obitsu 60cm Gretel and is now a Doll Chateau Snow Nymph. The original shell was sold because I found I vastly preferred resin to vinyl, and because the character had fallen out of use/importance. So initially I didn't even intend to reshell her.

It's kind of funny how Melody came about to be reshelled. I instantly fell in love with the DC Snow Nymph upon seeing her pictures, but couldn't afford or justify her yet, but I knew I needed her. It took me a while to figure out why and who she needed to be, and then it clicked, she was Melody.

My wife (then fiancee) surprised me by ordering her on layaway as a wedding gift for me. Which is very special for many reasons, one being that Melody had been the first OC I created specifically to RP with my wife with (though we were only friends at that point, quickly becoming besties though). So it was only fitting that she became a wedding gift in 2015 from my wife (though it took her many more years to finally shell Darten, her husband, in 2019 I think?).

Anyway, do you guys have any reshelled dolls, and if so, why or why not?

Finding the perfect bodies can be so crucial! I struggled with Val the most, as he’s on his third head and body. But I like the combination finally so I think he’s good to stay like this now.

I’ve had reshelling fails too, where the new shell didn’t suit the character at all. That happened with Sam 2.0, who ended up not fitting the character at all. I tried with her for years, but finally I sold the DZ Sawarieda body, and gave the DZ Minas head a new (DV B56-01) body and reshelled her again. This time she’s pretty good!

I hope you can warm up to your new look back Lishe head still, it’s so frustrating when a colormatched Faceup doesn’t “fit” the character and one has to redo it..

Doll number 50 made it a few weeks ago! I've named her Carina, Cari for short, and she's a blacksmith. She's a really fun character as she's an ex-paladin, and she can turn into a giant polar bear.

I need to get some new full body pictures of her painted, as I have some from her box opening.

I also compared her dark tan to to the light tan from the same company. I am thrilled with her color and look, I've been wanting a dark tan from TD Doll for a while, and she works perfectly in it!
