Sorry about jumping on this ask, MT. You mentioned something I wanted to touch on (hi anon).
I personally don't connect with the idea of being content because "at least we got Carol back".
I can understand and empathize with that sentiment because I know how difficult it must have been during the years when Carol was sidelined and then the subsequent spinoff debacle. The fandom actively tried to be vocal about her importance to the story so everyone is happy she's back. I personally wasn't here, so I can't speak from that perspective.
It makes me sad to think that so much is riding on Melissa's return and Norman and Melissa's chemistry. Melissa and her EP status shouldn't have the responsibility of carrying the whole show on her back, especially because the showrunner has done nothing to garner trust.
I'm noticing that some people are finding it challenging to come out of the shadows and speak about how they feel, fearing they will appear ungrateful after everything the fandom has been through over the last two years. And I get that.
We're all grateful to have Melissa back. I'll be honest and say I've also mentioned feeling hope because of her return quite a bit. But it's okay to rally for an impactful story for Carol, to have expectations for Carol and Daryl and their story together, and to be cautiously optimistic.
Fans have complicated feelings because this situation is complicated. They've mistreated Carol before, there is a lack of Carol-focused promo, and there is a strong history of ship baiting where Carol and Daryl are concerned; they even started the teaser on an ambiguous note. You're allowed to have complicated feelings about this.
You can be happy Carol is back *and* want a strong and impactful story that honours her journey. You can be happy Carol and Daryl are reuniting *and* want the story to revolve around them without shipbaiting. You can be excited about the future *and* feel anxious because of how the show has let you down in the past. You can be happy to see Caryl together *and* want a strong canon moment that honours them.
You're investing your time, money, energy, and hopes in these characters — it's okay to want a sense of fulfillment from their story.
Do you think you could get some enjoyment out of tboc if we don’t get canon?
You're asking me if I'm willing to settle for less than what Caryl, Melissa, and Caryl fans deserve because Greg Nicotero and David Zabel refuse to look past their biases, and my answer is no. Explicit canon represents the payoff after an agonizing wait made worse in the last couple of years because of so much mistreatment and gaslighting Melissa and her fans had to face. Canon is a natural step in Daryl's and Carol's individual journeys as well as their shared journey. To find home is to find each other. It's a dealbreaker for me. Between no canon and constant shipbaiting, you'd have to tell me where the hell the joy is. And please don't say "having Carol back" because I can be happy to have her back and still expect her story to be honored.
We finally get the chance to hear Melissa and Norman talk about their characters. Looking forward to hearing their takes on their stories. Carylers have waited a long time for this, but Caryl have waited longer.
Book of Carol. Melissa McBride, Norman Reedus to appear at the Tribeca Film Festival Festival in NYC June 2024.
Home is where they're together. It doesn't matter where Daryl and Carol are headed as long as they get to tell their story as they want to, with a showrunner who honours them and is as invested in their future as we are.
We already know they have a future. But in the right hands it's a bright and shiny one.
What's important to me is that Daryl and Carol stay true to themselves, get to go on adventures together as an established couple, confront their traumas in powerful ways, and help each other heal and grow and get stronger. Those adventures could happen anywhere. I don't care. They just need to be in the right hands.
Hey, everyone! I have stuff and thangs to share/ask:
1) I've organized a super index with all fics that were already recommended here in my humble blog. You can access it HERE or in my fixed post. I promise I'll keep it weekly updated. We are up to 113 rec fics written by 72 caryl authors, how amazing is that? This fandom is really something else.
2) Sunday is approaching and with it our #your turn sunday tag. Please PM me or send me an anon ask with your recommendations so they can be posted on this sunday and the next ones.
3) If there's anything you would like to propose to our rec project for 2024 (new tags/categories/themes/formats/etc), please let me know? I'm open to suggestions and collabs, and very happy to be back.
Love you all! Stay tuned for the #plot/no plot friday rec later tonight. Caryl on!
