2. It will cost you money. Every extreme sport requires some equipment. For some sports like skateboarding it’s cheaper, for some like scuba diving it’s more expensive – but without exception, practicing extreme sports will cost some of your hard earned money.

3. It takes time. More often than not practicing an extreme sport requires you to go to a special place somewhere (water, mountain, hill). Tic Toc 12 O’Clock Tech Talk – A Radio Format Talk Show Concept

Not long ago, I was talking to a friend of mine who was interested in getting into radio. Interestingly enough, I’ve always been a late-night radio listener over the years, and I wouldn’t mind doing something like that myself. As we got to talking, we wondered if radio is dead, and if these days people’s time is so divided between the Internet, social networks, and television that there aren’t many people listening anymore.

Nevertheless, that isn’t exactly so, and the top syndicated radio stations which play in the late-night do seem to have quite a following, and there is less competition at night. Perhaps that’s because there is a limited audience, and the best shows win out, while everyone else is competing for prime time drive times during the workday commutes. Regardless of why things are the way they are, I know that I am mostly a night person, and do most of my best thinking and work in the evening hours.

This is more common than you think, as many folks who are interested in technologies, innovation, science fiction, and intellectual discourse are also night time people. So, what about a midnight run radio show specializing in technology topics; Tech Talk – would that be a decent radio talk show format? Well, it turns out that there are some tech talk stations, but only a few of them are syndicated which run in the evening hours. I am quite surprised more people aren’t doing this because that’s when their audiences are listening.

Of course, if the tech talk radio personality becomes quite popular and syndicated, they can probably move to the daytime hours allowing for more listeners. Still, if you are a newbie trying to break into radio, there’s a fat chance in hell that a local well listened to radio station will give you the time of day, but they might give you some night time venue play. Is it worth a shot? Well, that’s where our conversation led while we’re at the local Starbucks discussing the late-night talk show radio opportunities.

Personally, if there were a station that played tech talk in the evening hours in my locality, I would definitely listen. And, I’m sure others would, especially those that work the night shift. If you are thinking about getting into radio, you’re going to have to put in some hard work to get things going, why not start in the evening where there is little or no competition until you work yourself up to the quality level needed to participate in the prime time drive times of the daily commuters? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Many companies have created a technical ladder career path that parallels their management ladder career path. The purpose of a technical ladder is to provide promotional opportunities for employees who bring great value to the company through their technical expertise and want to focus their careers on that expertise rather than build their careers through entering and rising through the management ranks. These companies have created a career path for these technical employees with titles and rewards that parallel manager, director, and vice president ranks using such titles as “consulting engineer” or “corporate marketing consultant” in lieu of management titles such as “engineering director” or “vice president of marketing.”

In the absence of a technical career ladder, many technically-gifted employees have been forced to move into management in order to attain more senior positions, and the rewards that go with those positions. The result for many has been that they find themselves unhappy in the management role and they yearn to return to their technical specialties, but are reluctant to give up the higher salaries and perks they have attained. When this happens, many have found that the company has lost a competitive technical edge and, at the same time, have some senior manager who are unhappy in their roles and end up leaving the company, voluntarily or involuntarily.

In most companies that use this approach, there are very specific criteria- a different set of competencies-that employees must meet to be promoted on the technical ladder. These criteria typically include the following: • Contributions to company products or services • Patents obtained • Reputation (external to the company) in their field of expertise • Presentations at industry conferences or technical papers for industry journals • Mentoring of junior technical staff.

Typically, employees who want to be promoted on a technical ladder must prepare a portfolio that documents their achievements, and that portfolio is reviewed by a panel of senior company officers who pass judgment on each application. How Much Time Is Required to Prepare for an Oracle Certification Exam?

People pursuing an Oracle certification exam often ask how much time they should allocate to prepare for the test. Unfortunately, there are so many variables involved in the amount of time required that most answers are simply a shot in the dark. No one can provide a specific preparation timeline for someone who they know nothing about. Generally the best that anyone can do is to indicate how long they studied for the same exam. That said, what can be done is to provide some low and high values to give you a range to work with. To that I can add some examples of the data points that are a factor in altering the study time up or down.

I have taken about twenty Oracle certification tests. The study time varied widely among them for a number of reasons. However, as a rule of thumb, I tend to spend four to six weeks preparing for any given test. The actual time I spend studying is on the order of eighty to a hundred hours during that period. I would put eighty to a hundred hours forward as a low-end for preparation time. I’m a fast reader; I have been working with Oracle for over sixteen years; and I generally know a fair amount of the subject being tested before I ever begin formally preparing for the exam. The only way that I could see a candidate spending much less time than that studying would be for someone who is truly an expert in the topics covered by the test. I would put the high-end preparation time at three times the low-end. Call it 240 to 300 hours of study time. Given fifteen hours of study time a week, you would need sixteen to twenty weeks to prep for the exam.

To estimate how long it might take you to study for a given test, begin by assuming it will take about the midpoint of the high and low numbers, or 190 hours. Then ask yourself the following questions:

Do you already know the topic well, or are you just learning it? If you know it well, subtract ten or twenty hours. If you are new to the topics being tested, add ten or twenty. If you have some familiarity but not a lot, leave the number as is.

Are you a fast reader with good reading comprehension? If so, drop ten or twenty hours. If you are a slow reader, or need to read something several times to retain it, then add ten or twenty hours.

The Oracle documentation is an excellent source for preparing for the test, but the information is generally dispersed among multiple manuals, which will slow you down. If you are using this to study rather than a third-party source that gathers the information into a single source, add fifteen or twenty hours.

Can you really not afford to fail this test and have to pay to retake it? If so, you should probably add another ten or twenty hours to give you that much better chance to pass the test on the first attempt.

There are other factors to consider, and more questions that you can ask yourself. The above list should provide a sufficient start to allow you to refine the estimate to best fit your situation. The key phrase is ‘your situation.’ The amount of study time required has very little bearing on the test itself. It depends almost entirely on your abilities and current level of knowledge. Whatever you do, be sure not to underestimate. There has never been a time when I have been in a testing center taking an Oracle exam where I wished that I had spent a little less time preparing. Don’t schedule the test until you are confident that you are prepared to pass it. Everything in here is just making an estimate, if you spend three hundred hours preparing and still are not confident that you know the materials, then study some more. The worst thing that can happen is to take it before you are ready and fail.

Double Your Investment With an Overlay Keyboard

An overlay keyboard can do double duty. Its ability to hold configurations for two programs can double its usefulness.

Each of the keys on an overlay keyboard allows for the reproduction of any series of characters available on a regular keyboard. Also a sequence of letters, numbers, or functions may be obtained by pressing a single key. This is achieved by creating a configuration file corresponding to the user’s needs. This file is then transferred to the overlay keyboards permanent memory. The new key functions are then represented graphically on an overlay sheet.

Any program can be made more user-friendly with the addition of an overlay keyboard. However, during the course of a day we will use different programs. As a result the configuration for one program may not work well with a second program. Normally this would mean having to stop and reconfigure the keyboard.

A quality overlay keyboard will contain two separate configurations. Then by simply pressing the appropriate control keys the user can switch between the two configurations. The user would then quickly change the graphic overlay and the switch would be complete.

For example, one configuration could contain the short cut keys for a word processor and the second could be configured for a photo editing program.

When two different configurations are used some things need to be considered.

First, place similar commands on the same key. All programs use the Copy, Cut and Paste functions. Other commands include Open, Select All and Save. Keep these and other parallel commands on the same keys in the two templates.

Second, when creating an overlay use the same graphic to represent the command. If a word is used to describe the command use the same word. If a graphic such as an arrow is used use the same graphic. Use the same color scheme for the graphic on the two overlays. These simple tips will keep confusion to a minimum.

Yes, there have been many versions of manikins, dummies, and stationary, even semi-positional moving human-like formed objects able to help simulate sparing partners previously, but nothing very notable, or real-life-like. All of that is now about to change as these newest robotic fencing devices change the sport forever.
