Here’s one of the smaller details in dead poets society that I think gets slept on. In the scene where Cameron is talking to Neil about Todd he says “your new roommate looks like a stiff.” And then Todd walks in and he says “oops.” And walks away. Here’s what I find interesting about this scene: Neil is the only person vaguely nice to Cameron in the entirety of the movie. So naturally, Cam thinks Neil will have his back. But as the plot progresses, we watch Neil fall in love with Todd. He didn’t agree nor disagree with Cam in that first scene where they’re together. Because he doesn’t know Todd yet. Cam on the other hand is outwardly judgemental towards almost everyone. I honestly think Cam doesn’t deserve all the hate he gets. My HC is that he’s a scholarship student. His parents are poor and he’s worked his whole life to get to Welton. But no one knows this. So when Cam snitches , it’s to protect himself yes but I think it’s also to make his parents proud. Cam in my mind is a closeted gay or aromantic who just cannot process his feelings in the world the poets live in. So when he sees Neil and Todd, he’s jealous. He knows they had the life he’ll never be able to have. In the end DPS is a story of expectations and the paths we’ve been forced to take. Doesn’t everyone act in their own self interest at first?

Headcanon: DPS boys and dental hygiene

Neil- Neil tries really hard to have good dental hygiene, especially since the dentist is expensive, and he knows his father will blame him if he ever has to get any fillings. Unfortunately, he frequently forgets to brush his teeth, especially since he has a habit of collapsing into his bed and immediately falling asleep after school. He also often finds that he doesn't have enough energy to brush his teeth, or he's too jittery and can't focus for long enough.

Todd- His first few weeks at Welton, Todd only brushed his teeth a handfull of times. Public bathrooms make him anxious, especially when all the boys on the floor are getting ready for bed at the same time. He eventually learns what times the bathroom is emptiest and structures his schedule around that.

Charlie- Exclusively uses the strangest, most childish flavours of toothpaste to ever exist. Flavours like grape, orange, cotton candy, bubble gum, and chocolate. No one knows where he finds them.

He also brushes his teeth like once a week.

Knox- Brushes his teeth twice a day and flosses every day like he's supposed to. The problem is that he does both very aggressively. His gums are receding.

Meeks- Absolutely hates the taste of mint, so he uses cinnamon toothpaste instead. Everyone else things it's disgusting but he likes how it tastes.

Pitts- Didn't used to care much about dental hygiene as a child, but as he got older, he started to be seen as a role model by his younger siblings, so he felt like he had to demonstrate good hygiene so that they would follow suit. The habit sticks around when he's at Welton and he eventually starts to become a role model to the other boys.

He has a superhero toothbrush.

Cameron- Obsessive about dental hygiene. Brushes twice a day and flosses daily. He even has a special angled toothbrush to get at the plaque along his gumline. He knows the proper brushing technique to prevent his gums from receding, and he brushes his teeth every time he eats anything with sugar in it. He uses mouthwash every day, and he even uses a specific kind of dental floss that he has to special order.

His dentist compliments him every time.

bones (maybe) hot take: daisy wick is not annoying. anything apparently negative that can be said of her, can also be said of other characters who are well-liked by fans.

struggles in many social situations? so does… well, i was gonna say brennan, but actually most of the other characters on the show as well. talks a lot & is "too" cheerful? so does vincent nigel-murray. "too" emotional? the show is literally about emotion & logic coexisting! comes off as self-absorbed or too proud? so does brennan, plenty of people in-universe have that impression of her. messes up sometimes? they all do that, either for plot drama or comedic effect. chose her career over her love life? so did brennan… like, at the exact same time. tends to be oblivious to people’s negative opinions of her? so is brennan, fairly often.

daisy actually has many of the same character traits as brennan, except she’s also cheerful & open. her sin is being too happy? or that doesn’t have enough abandonment trauma? nah i love daisy. she’s misunderstood. i’m daisy’s defence lawyer for life.

HC that Neil loves the idea of Todd wearing his clothes (because then maybe people will think they're dating and then Todd will think they're dating and-), so he puts a few of his flannels and sweaters in Todd's closet hoping he'll wear them. And of course he does, and when Charlie points it out with that shit-eating Charlie grin, Todd blushes and stammers and apologizes and Neil falls all the more in love.
