“Well, well, if it isn’t the elusive Roxy.” There was a note of laughter to his voice as he turned and tilted her head up into a kiss. One that lingered a bit longer than perhaps necessary, but between his work and her travels, they hardly got to spend time together.

“I’m honored you would take time out of your journey just for something as simple as my birthday.”

With how long they had been married by now, Reina had slowly been allowed to assist in his work — at this point in their lives, it was easy for her to handle some matters on her own and help him catch up another day, something that made it easy for her to guarantee Ayato had a true day off for his birthday. A tired smile tugged at her lips as she nuzzled her face into his back, arms only wrapping around him tighter as she refused to let him go. When she spoke again, it's muffled into the warmth of his skin, more kisses being pressed wherever she can reach with a happy hum.

He had been getting a bit better about not running himself ragged. While his duties in fact had increased since the borders reopened, unlike his father before him, he didn’t wish to exhaust himself to an early grave. And Reina’s stubbornness in the matter certainly helped with that resolve.

He chuckled and turned around so they were facing each other. For once, they hadn’t spent the night together making love, and so there were soft and silken layers of clothing between the two. Ayato cuddled in close to her, burying his face in her hair.

“Thank you,” he said softly. “Your care means the world to me, Reina. Truly.”

Signe gently plucks the quill out of his hand, replacing it with a neatly-wrapped gift. The thrumming of the potion within glowed just past the wrapping paper, giving him an idea of what it might be. It didn't come by itself, however -- there was also a ribbon-wrapped box of pastries, assorted and cozy-looking, as well as a small bottle of dandelion wine. The witch's smile was warm despite her decisive words, and she sat herself on his lap with little hesitation as she waited for a reply.

"Well? What do you say?"

Her visit had been a surprise, so he hadn’t exactly been prepared- otherwise he wouldn’t have been working when she arrived. The presents, of course, were appreciated, but her being there, as far as he was concerned, was the real treat.

“Well, how could I ever say no to you?” he asked, the warmth of a smile reaching his voice. When she sat on his lap, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into a lingering kiss.

Lips still pressed together, he said, “And what did you have in mind?”
