rant about Slaughterhouse 5 and Hamilton the musical
so i was listening so hamilton and at one point, it’s hamilton’s part and he says “i imagine death so much it feels more like a memory. when is it gonnna get me? in my sleep, seven feet ahead of me?” addressing the first part, “i imagine death so much it feels so much it feels more like a memory,” i immediately thought of desensitized, nearly useless billy pilgrim. after a lot of unhealthy evaluation, i’ve ruled out a few things. first of all, hamilton and pilgrim are similar and different in so many important ways. it’s not actually important at all, but for me it puts things in perspective. for one, hamilton grew up surrounded by death from disease and su/c/de. there is no way he should be alive by the age of 30, but he was. by his late teens, he developed a reckless sense of boldness. instead of this turning into the put together hero u.s. patriots see him as today, he actually very quickly became a workaholic. his boldness was converted into chaos, obsession, and anxiety as he begun to be involved in politics and the federalist papers. billy pilgrim was almost the exact opposite. he experienced trauma so early on that he never had time to be bold or have defined characteristics and hobbies. he was almost immediately gone forever, coocoo for coco puffs. he’s so desensitized that he thinks that [and accepts] when he dies he will simply become a glorified alien time traveler. this is billy’s unhealthy coping mechanism, his perception of life through the lense of Tralfamadore. everything is nothing, and all in between. to him. there is absolutely nothing to lose, whereas hamilton feels that if he makes one wrong move the world will fall apart. admittedly, he is responsible for almost leading the development of federalism as a large party back then and a huge part of the developement of the u.s. as a whole, but do not forget his lack of coping. he simply lives through everything, every though, whereas billy pilgrim hardly has any thoughts.
TLDR, alexander hamilton is a workaholic and cares far too much, and also just doesnt have any concept of a coping mechanism or a break. in contrast to this, billy pilgrim doesn’t give a rats ass and thinks that everything is just fine even though he’s in a literal war. mind blank, no thoughts.  this isn’t important for anybody, it’s just an info dump and my thought process/how i came to understand these characters better
