Helen Keller said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” 

What that means to me is this: that it’s one thing to see what’s in front of you but if you can’t interpret it in a way that gives meaning then you might as well not have seen it at all. If the world around you is just a bunch of meaningless stuff that happens and there’s nothing any of us can do about it, then it doesn’t matter what we do or don’t do. 

I think that having vision means finding meaning in things, which ideally creates opportunities to discover hope where you might otherwise feel hopeless. Identifying those opportunities for hope can create a path to the moments in which we make important decisions and take decisive actions that can change a life, including our own. It starts with having an ability to imagine beyond the present picture of our world and apply some creativity to create depth within the experience. 

I know that I am the least effective when I want to move toward something but can’t see a path forward. Right now, I’m going back to school to study music. For the longest time I said, “Of course I’ve always wanted to do this but there’s no way I’d get in.” And then I said “I can’t believe I got in but how will I pay for it?”  I’d been taking what I thought I knew based on what I’d seen without applying any broader vision and I got myself stuck. I was indecisive because I was only seeing what was right in front of me. Now I’m seeing more of what’s possible and it’s been changing the way I move in the world. www.marveloptics.com
