dancing in the rain//open
Tumblr media
Zia ignored the sky splitting open above her, threatening to consume the town in water. Though she hated not being able to fly at the moment due to the wind, this helped her get back to basics. It was as if they were bringing the chaos of the ocean to the earth. It was beautiful. It was tumultuous. It reminded her of the day she destroyed an entire civilization.
She danced around the beach, her clothes soaked through. Honestly, she was surprised she was still wearing them. She remembered hearing about fairies once. How they enticed you to dance in their rings and then made you dance to death with them. It sounded like fun. Maybe she needed to try it.
She turned to the nearest body to her and smiled. "Isn't it a lovely day. Dance with me?"

"Something pretty, I think," she said. "Or something ugly. I haven't figured out which yet." She had been having urges for the last few days. She had resisted because of all the pretty colors and it was her way of supporting the event. But, two days was long enough without a death, right? At the very least, no one would miss a merfolk. She could leave the humans alone for today. "People miss the ugly a lot less, but the pretty..."
She tilted her head as if she was deep in thought. Then just as soon as the madness appeared, it dissipated. She was sound, for the moment. She turned to Soomin. Some of the waterfolk were scared of her, due to her field. Zia just saw an entrepreneur like herself. Besides, if Zia wanted to, she could kill her and have just enough time to get in a second one before dinner.
"Besides, I want to see if there are any deals so I can resell them at the shop. You wouldn't happen to have anything, would you?" she asked. Zia clapped her hands excitedly. "Oh, or for my darling child? I'd love to get them a present."

there was nothing like seeing so many species melting together and enjoying a week long pride festival. you could practically feel the happy and soulful moments without even seeing them occurring. it had been carefully planned and excited on the council’s behalf. as it had been every year since it had begun to be a thing in their town. truth be told, soomin honestly didn’t give a shit about any of it. not in the same sense as many who did. she didn’t care to celebrate.
the only part she enjoyed was the higher demand for black market goods. there was something special about the sex toys the island didn’t have that seemed to get so many in a tizzy. some of those that requested really did seem to be connoisseur at that point. they seem to get new things every year. some couples of different species trying to see what would make the other tick. she had learned a lot through them. it was how she found out electricity to a naiad in their natural form wasn’t… exactly good for them. how… unfortunate.
while she didn’t wish to celebrate, she did find herself people watching. a well-practiced smile on her face when she was greeted by others. someone from the trade council needed to be friendly after all. secret looks from those that were black market customers as well. soomin wasn’t people watching for fun. recently she had an outside request for sire blood. something to do with restorative properties. really, she didn’t care but it did have her on the look out for any that might before easily missed. that didn’t really include zia when she saw her. a bit of a notorious siren as of the last few months of her showing up on land again. insanity constantly seemed to cling to her edges and to soomin, that could be useful. “looking for something specific zia?” she questioned as she watched the other move about in a seemingly random pattern. “area isn’t that big,” she seemingly teased good naturedly.

hunting grounds//hyemi and zia

"I'm not sure I would be the best for a band," Zia said. "After all, you know my anonymity is part of my fun." There was something about being perceived as so innocent, then squashing it wholly. It gave her a weird sort of thrill.
She was cleaning her hands. They had just been talons a moment ago and, unfortunately, they still had something stuck in them. "And I just got a manicure too. A little treat, you know?" She didn't know why she bothered. Her hands always got dirty. "Besides, I don't usually sing." She was mostly known for her whistling. Though, she could sing. In fact, it was a rare treat for those who had a chance to hear her. "Though, if you can guarantee me some merfolk... well, then maybe I'd give it a try." Humans would die eventually, anyways. She could always go back to anonymity in a few decades.

"Of course. Thankfully, he took after me," she said. Unfortunately, there were moments she saw glimpses of her ex in him. She couldn't blame the child for his mother's transgressions. She hoped there was an afterlife and he could stew in the pain that was knowing his bastard child had survived as had Zia. Now, they were happy and all that remained of his precious kingdom.
"Oh, I wouldn't call it empty. You are practically one with the water, a sign of its ancient mysteries," she said. During that moment, she was strangely lucid. The millennia faded away and the young girl thirsty for adventure reappeared. Naïve and earnest. "It is a tragedy you must hide it. Your real form is much nicer than mine."
As quickly as that girl appeared, she was gone. Zia continued, as if nothing in her demeanor had changed. "Well, if you ever need help cutting someone open, I am available. Though, I am not used to keeping them alive at the end of it." She thought for a moment. "It seems less fun, but I could try it."
Zia began drawing shapes in the water, her fingertips dancing. Though they disappeared as quickly as she made them, she could see them in her mind's eye. "Let me know if you need me to liven up this revelry. You know I am always here to help."
sure, jiwon had a child of his own - more than one, if you counted siwoo, which countless people over the years have made the mistake of doing - but he'd never think to liken the experience of being a parent to dealing with humans. he's not even the terribly paternal type, but it's more like... when you go somewhere and someone has a child that simply will not stop screaming, with no thought for others around and not enough common sense to self-soothe yet, rather than something precious.
besides, her little boy is hardly as little as she's describing. he doesn't know exactly how old zia is, nor does he know her child, but he knows she's far, far older than he himself is. her child most likely is as well; an amusing thought that he, at over seven hundred and fifty years old, is little more than a toddler in comparison to how long zia has lived. "maybe so. but your child is better behaved than most humans, i'm sure."
Tumblr media
before the coup, he'd spent much of his time in the water. there's something meditative about it, whenever he could shed all pretense of being anything but what he was. it's harder to get out here, now that the dryads have done their best to oust him, but jiwon manages as best he can with visits every few days. he's almost envious of those who stay elsewhere, had even considered enticing the little advisor to give up his conveniently located well, once upon a time, but this river, this whole forest, really, is his birthright, and he cannot abandon it just because some trees have made it inconvenient for him.
jiwon hums, amused. "have we resorted to trading flatteries then?" footsteps approach from somewhere behind him, then quickly retreat. he doesn't have to look to know that they were scared away by zia, as they would be hard-pressed not only to see him, but to recognise him from the back. "i used to wear nothing but." a wistful sigh, then. "i spend too much time in town nowadays. i hardly think most of the inhabitants of hanjeong would be keen on receiving treatment from an invisible doctor, and i need to do something to fill my time."
perhaps the supernatural people of hanjeong may, but they're also less likely to seek out human medicine. though he does practice some natural healing methods, he finds that modern medicine tends to be trusted more on a broader scale. curious, how they won't trust an nymph healing method, but they'll trust a nymph to dole out their own.

"It's so hard to find anyone with manners these days," she said. "People used to at least say hello before they started running off." Though, she supposed after a few thousand years, her reputation had gotten a bit more prominent among their supernatural community. Humans were at least still easy to mess with. They just saw her as a pretty little girl. "Well, I do quite enjoy kids. My little boy is just precious," she said. "But, I suppose it's different when you have your own children."
She sensed him entering the water, but she was unbothered. Many had tried to take her out, but she doubted Jiwon would be trying to do so. At least, not today. "Well, it wouldn't be any fun if you didn't," she said.
Zia batted her eyes open. It took her a few seconds, but she spotted him soon enough. There was something fascinating about the naiad form. They were practically water themselves. She was a bit jealous, but not enough to be mean about it. "You look even prettier. You should wear this one more often."
"i do have eyes, yes." head tipped back, basking in the little bits of sun as they stream through the trees, jiwon hums. "the cheaper of the compliments i could give you, but if it's the one that resonates..." he makes a dismissive sort of hand wave, as though to say whatever.
"you're not missing all that much." he glances downstream, where the humans are splashing around in the water as if they deserve it, as if they're not sullying it just with their presence. "unless you're all that interested in spending time with overgrown toddlers, i suppose."
Tumblr media
speaking of overgrown toddlers... his mind drifts, momentarily, to that merfolk prince with a head bigger than the crown he wears. matters of the ocean do not often concern jiwon, but the merfolk's kingdom and its biggest problem new monarch had been... concerning. he's surprised that a siren hasn't put a stop to that whole bloodline, but good things usually come with time. perhaps it will even be zia herself, if the mood strikes her. she'd done it before, after all.
"oh, so you think i'm likeable?" he mimics her earlier tone, batting his own eyes, even if she isn't looking. pushing himself up onto his haunches, jiwon lets out a heavy breath, letting his glamour fall away easily, as though it had never been there. he slides into the water, surfacing somewhere near zia, assured her enhanced senses will still allow her to see him despite his near-invisibility. "just to warn you, i bite back."

Zia liked them. She could sense a certain darkness that was comforting in a way. "Trust me, I am nobody's prey." It was why so many naiads had willfully gone away for the moment, even though this was their waters and even though they knew naiads weren't usually her victims of choice. All they had to do was not get in her way.
"You seem fun," she said. Zia's voice, laced with a playful tone, danced through the air like the soft rustling of leaves in a breeze. Her eyes shone mischievously. "Well, if you're not coming in, I guess I'll come out."
She shimmied out of the water and her tail slowly became legs. Though nudity was acceptable at the festival, she had quite liked the clothes weaved by her people. So, she wore a dress made a shells and found netting. Maybe she should get herself a flower crown to complete the outfit.
She stood up, already used to being topside for so long thanks to her child. She outstretched her hand in a human greeting. "Zia, by the way."

as with most of her life, celestine was following energy. a soft whispering of magic that belonged to one of her own kind. not as prominent as the old ones, or the odd flow that was pushed outward when talon did his strange branding of others. this felt to be a young one, an energy signature she was not familiar with, and as the one whom she was not presently prepared to expose herself to seemed to be nowhere near, the siren witch did not ignore it. letting the energy play along her senses she hummed softly to herself, a vocalization of uneasy comfort that bewitched as she passed like the strange case of shivers that ran up one's spine seemingly unprovoked before disappearing as she passed.
when at last the pool was reached, the gentle roar of moving water further eased her, but she was not prepared to offer herself to the fresh water pooling below the falls. as she crouched, long dark tresses fallowing over her shoulder she gave a fleeting smile at the sound of pearls and shells passing along one another, the many small braids adorned with them one of the few vanities she had never forsaken, even open the ocean floor in the darkness.
"no," she answered quote plainly, still finding the new human speech clunky and unnecessary for those would could, and should simply vocalize. times were different, she would learn to adapt. "we do not offer ourselves as easy pray to the spirits of the water." came after a pause, as even know she could feel the power of the water nymphs, poised and ready to strike should anything displease them.

"So, you think I'm beautiful?" she said. She batted her eyes, clearly making fun of his response. Zia admired someone who was aware of her viciousness. It made her feel flattered much more than any commentary on her appearance. After all, she knew it was pretty. It was pretty much shoved down her throat growing up.
She pouted slightly. "I haven't bitten anyone... yet. They just seemed to have things to do as soon as I came in. How rude of them, don't you think? Leaving me all alone," she said.
She began floating on her back, barely paying attention to Jiwon. As a siren, she didn't care particularly about monarchies or mayors. She only answered to the chaos of the ocean and her own bloodlust.
"I promise, I'll only play with you a little bit. After all, I quite like you," she said. And that was true for today. Who knew what tomorrow would bring? "And it is your day."
he had to show his face just enough. not enough, and it would be suspicious. too much, the same fate. a delicate balance, showing for certain events, being seen elsewhere in town for others... tricky work, creating an alibi.
wanting to be seen does not mean that he wants to be talked to, however. although many of the nymphs in the forest are... not friendly, but at the very least indifferent to him after fifteen years, there are still some that are less than thrilled to see him at the revelry. thankfully, near this portion of the river is quiet, though it isn't hard to see why once he notices zia beneath the surface of the water.
humming in response, jiwon rolls his neck, as though he were actually considering it. he'd kept his glamour up just for the sake of it, but it's a tedious thing to do. perhaps he'd let his hair down before the party was over. "just because a lion is beautiful to look at does not mean that you should get in the enclosure to play with it." he looks amused, however, leaning back on his arms from his position sitting on the shore.
Tumblr media
"have you been biting swimmers, then? is that why it's just you and i over here? it's rather peaceful." he can't stand to see the insects infest his waters, after all. you need only tolerate it for another few days, he reminds himself, then the dryads will get the silly idea that the humans are worth befriending out of their heads.

May 10, 2023: Naiad Appreciation Day
Naiad Falls
No one seemed to want to get in the river since she had arrived. How strange. But, Zia didn't mind having the space to swim to her heart's content. Though she preferred the salty brine of the ocean, this was a nice change of pace.
She was in her full form, but she had never been all that siren-like in the water. It was easy enough to mistake her for a common mermaid (gag), though she felt one of those fishbaits would wish they had as lovely of a tail as her.
Zia popped her head above the water, relaxing on the shore. She smiled at the person in front of her. "So, are you going to join me? It's been a bit lonely here. Who knows why?"

Zia didn't mind being alone. Not after everything. For the first few thousand years, she had wanted to become one with the ocean floor, mourning her child. Mourning what could have been. She ate, she destroyed, but only to survive. She had then picked herself up, but she had not truly felt herself again until she was reunited with her baby. She had missed so much with him, but at least they had found each other.
Of course, the thousands of years she spent without him where still engraved in her mind. At least, they'd have thousands more. Maybe, someday, the pain would fade away. Also, the guilt that she had left her son to fendfor himself.
Really, Zia's primary reason for remaining topside is her boy. He was raised among humans and he liked it here. So, she had made a life for herself. At least there was a lot of fun to be had on the surface world.
Admittedly, even her son is not safe from torment. He can call her his sister all he wants to the human folk, but she will never stop mothering him.
Zia felt a little blush come to her cheeks. Her yuyu truly was the best. "Oh pup, this is so sweet. Thank you. I'll put them in the shop for everyone to see." She smelled the flowers and hugged her son, kissing the top of his head. At least she hadn't pinched his cheeks this time. "Does mother's day mean you will get to spend the whole day with your mom? Or at least a meal?" she asked.
for @hjxzia
zhiyuan was never the sentimental type. it's hard to be, afterall, when your life spans over six thousand years, when you seem to outlive the very world around you. days blend into decades, memories become a distant blur; feelings of once was are entirely lost to time.
he remembers his first mother, barely. her face, her laugh, nothing more than some hazy dream by now. and yet, he finds bits of her in his everyday: she is his confidence when he talks, she is the deep breathe of humid air during the rain, she is his favorite shade of red, she is his strength itself.
zia was nothing like her. he knows from the way he doubted how zia accepted him so warmly, how he flinched each time he made a mistake expecting something to come that never did, the way he's surprised each time she spoils him, how unfamiliar her love feels each time she offers it unconditionally.
if his first mother is the bones that make him, then zia is his heart now opened.
there were whispers going around the bar that night: ' i bet she did it, ' they'd say, ' it has to be her, they say she's the hungriest for blood. ' the exact words were never spoken, but he knows the target that's been placed on his mother's back since the news broke. it breaks him, little by little.
if it were his first mother, he thinks, he'd let the words break him until he was nothing but scattered pieces. but it isn't – right now it's zia. so he decides to visit her, give her the love no one else is willing to, just as he did for him all those millenia ago
the sign outside the flower shop reads HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY in a soft pink, and he picks up a small boquet on his way. "i'm sure you're mom will love it," the florist says to him, and a small blush paints his cheeks in embarassment. "it's for my sister, actually," zhiyuan lies, as he always does, finger scratching the back of his ear. his compromise, their little secret; it didn't matter to him if the humans didn't know the truth of their relationship – he'll play whatever game he has to to keep the peace of his daily life.
he meets her on secluded part of the beach, a place away from the prying eyes of outsiders. "a little birdie told me it's a human holiday today," he still whispers, just in case, finger scratching the back of his ears again. "happy mother's day," he says, feeling a bit awkward as he hands her the bunch of tulips. it's so unlike him, to let himself be this unrefined; it's like 5 thousand years have disappeared, and he's nothing more than just a little boy again.

Zia liked this human. Maybe she wouldn't kill her. At least, not today. The hunger was quiet and she was in a good mood after this morning's activities. Though this one was human and reeked of pirate blood, at least she wasn't a mermaid. Then, Zia would have to turn into a bird right here and now.
She climbed off her perch and came face to face with Haeun. "Maybe a little of both," she said.
Zia was solely here to create discord. "I just came to put it on record that I'd never have an affair with your relative." She thought for a moment. "The new mayor, maybe, but frankly I could do better than the last one."
She didn't care that she was currently talking to the man's family. Close, distant, it didn't matter. "Not that he wasn't interested, I'm sure. He had a very particular... taste. Or so I heard from a little birdie." That birdie being Yeji before she disappeared.
"Besides, I don't deal with cheaters. Well, except to peck their eyes out." She made a little gesture, giggling slightly. Really, that was also proof enough she hadn't kill that stodgy old fart. It wasn't messy enough.
Tumblr media
There was no way she was keeping track of how many times she had circled the running path. All Haeun knew was there was music screaming in her ears as her feet hit the pavement. Her thoughts were fully consumed by that police report. By the rumors she had been hearing. The fingers being pointed from left to right. In her mind, it was all some bullshit. She was a pirate blooded that didn’t believe a thing until it was proven.
They didn’t let her examine the body. ‘Because it was a family member,’ they said. Again, a whole load of bullshit.
Those thoughts had been consuming her for days. While she worked. While she was at home. When she worked out. Nothing seemed to snap her out of the genuine distaste she had over all of it. It made her suspicious. Her instincts told her something was off but every time she tried to investigate it, there was nothing but roadblocks.
Hence the run she was keeping no track of. Sweat cascading in all the places it normally did in the body as she finally stopped for a breath. Close to the beach, allowing the cool breeze to help her heated skin. Taking a drink of the water she had in her hand, she found herself idly looking for a seat on what was like a boardwalk. Finally, like her body relax for a minute.
Haeun leaned her head back, finally enjoying the sun for a little while before she could feel a shadow fall over her. She didn’t open and eye but decided to speak, “here for me or the view?”

Zia's own business had been vandalized, but she was no longer bitter about it. She had cameras. Those responsible would certainly not be able to do it again after what she had done to them. Still, this was quite the shame. What... tacky vandalism. If you truly hated someone, there were better ways to get the message across.
"Well, I can help in other ways," she said.
Of course, those old enough knew what Zia was insinuating. She wasn't usually a benevolent figure in town, but she at least didn't require a favor in return. The possibility of violence was enough. "Really, the problem would be solved by lunch. I'd just have to close my shop for a bit."
Tumblr media
this... certainly does not bode well.
staring up at the facade of his favourite café, bit clutches the books in his arms a little closer to his chest, a physical barrier between him and the desecration. vandalised overnight. not the first nymph business its happened to, either.
get out sewer water. cute.
a frown pinches his face. won't be long until this escalates. if the humans don't put a stop to it... he doesn't want to know what might happen next, who might be the first blood drawn.
Tumblr media
glancing over as someone else approaches, presumably to see what everyone is looking at, bit hums. "they said they're still going to be open today. just mind your step." the glass on the front of the building is all shattered, but employees have swept away the bulk of it. he understands, at least, why they want to be open, despite this. can't give up so easily, let those troglodytes think they've won. a sense of normalcy during turbulent times is also highly desirable. perhaps he should... "i'll pay, if you're on the fence. they could use the support."

Zia wasn't a stranger to murder. Once you tore down an entire civilization, it really wasn't all that difficult. In all honesty, she didn't remember it. She was in a frenzied state, her first. She thought her child was gone and all she saw was red. She wasn't entirely sure how she made it all sink to the bottom of the ocean, but Zia knew it was her.
Most beings were scared of her. She might not feast on them, but her eyes certainly filled with a certain mirth whenever she hunted. They were downright giddy when she succeeded. It was easy for her to prey on them. Aside from her red eyes when she went in for the kill, she looked mostly like a mermaid. At least, in the water.
The sight of blood calmed her, especially when it came from a merfolk. The only one of those she liked was her own child and really, that was her fault. She had made sure to apologize to them about their mother's shortcomings.
Despite the bloodlust, Zia was not always a monster. And, right now, hearing this child cry for her, she felt maternal pangs overwhelm her. She sighed dramatically, but also in a sort of sympathetic way. "Sorry, I don't usually kill our kind. But I can help in other ways."
She pulled the child into her arms, head on her lap. She began to pet his hair. Hopefully, he didn't mind. Though, she was fairly sure if he went feral towards her, she could handle him. Zia hadn't survived this long by being weak. "What is troubling you my child? Are you still hungry?" A silly question really. Beings like them were always hungry. The best they could do was sate their hunger temporarily.
