When DR. JANE FOSTER lifts the mystic hammer Mjolnir, she is transformed into the Goddess of Thunder, THE MIGHTY THOR! Her enemies are many, as Asgard descends further into chaos and war threatens to spread throughout the Ten Realms. Yet her greatest battle will be against a far more personal foe: the cancer that is killing her mortal form.
The Mighty Thor #1 - December 2015 - Marvel Comics
Another brand new series from Marvel. This one seems to be a difficult change for a lot of longtime Thor fans to accept. I was never really a fan of Thor in any case, so I picked up the first issue just for the sake of this project. I liked the issue, and I like the way Jane Foster is presented. I only knew about that character from the recent Thor movies, I didn’t realize that Jane Foster becoming Thor is actually an old gimmick being done seriously now. In this story, Doctor Foster is a patient in treatment for terminal cancer, which I find an interesting way to analyze the idea of the inner strength vs outer strength of a person, which seems to be a theme of this book.

Robbie never asked for any of this. While drunkenly walking home from a punk show, he’s hit with lightning and wakes to find that he’s been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he’s forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.
The Mantle Vol. 1- May 2015 - Image Comics
The tagline for this comic is actually a fake out, to deflect the twist at the end of issue #1. Robbie does gain the power of the Mantle, but it turns out it’s more than he bargained for. After Robbie gets killed by the Mantle’s arch-nemesis: The Plague, his girlfriend Jen unwillingly inherits the Mantle and reluctantly finds the superhero within her in order to avenge Robbie and the other fallen Mantles of the past.

Lunella Lafayette is a preteen super genius who wants to change the world-but learned the hard way that it takes MORE than just big brains. Fearful of the monstrous INHUMAN genes inside her, life is turned upside down when a savage, red-scaled tyrant is teleported from prehistoric past to a far-flung future we call TODAY. The pair are many things, and together the most amazing Marvel Team-Up. MARVEL PRESENTS... MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR!
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur - November 2015 - Marvel Comics
A brand new series, issue one follows the story of a girl genius who discovers an artifact with a link to the past. Lunella struggles to fit in with the rest of her peers, and her parents just want her to be normal. Fortunately she is anything but normal. Lunella is a new character created for this series, while Devil Dinosaur has been around since 1978. I thought this was a great pairing of the two characters, the book has great humor and personality.

A rag doll trying to find love and fend off his depression. Follow Li'l Depressed boy as he attempts to find happiness and discovers a girl that just might bring him what is missing in his life.
The Li'l Depressed Boy - February 2011 - Image Comics
I read this series a couple years ago and it really hit home for me as someone who struggles with depression. In fact a lot of the scenes about social anxiety and awkward romance are visceral experiences for me. LDB is like any of us, he struggles to feel comfortable in a world where others can make it seem so easy.

A well worn mixtape, a stolen convertible, a duffel bag full of cash, a fully loaded .45, and super-powers. Seventeen and on the run is the only way to see America right. Teenage outcast Duncan and popular girl Madison share a secret - they can do things other people can't. But their abilities take them down a dangerous path. After a deadly accident they are left with no choice: leave home and never come back. We Can Never Go Home is a new chance to fall in love with the doomed misfits who need to run away to find themselves.
We Can Never Go Home - March 2015 - Black Mask Comics
Another series I read earlier on. Using her secret powers, Madison rescues Duncan from being bullied by the captain of the football team and they become friends. Only now her secret is out and they aren’t safe anymore. After an incident at Duncan’s home, they find themselves on the run. What I loved about this series is the idea that you can have powers and still be powerless.

A-Force is an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comicsthat debuted in May 2015 as a part of Marvel's "Secret Wars" crossover event. The series, created by writers G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett and artist Jorge Molina, features Marvel's first all-female team of Avengers.
A-Force - May 2015 - Marvel Comics
I gotta be honest, I never paid attention to this series until after this project started. I’m glad I did after all, as I like it much more than other battleworld stories featuring more prominent characters. I enjoyed the writing and the artwork; I didn’t know much about these characters before but I like them and I look forward to the ongoing series.

Batman saves 13-year-old Carrie Kelley from an attack by a gang called the Mutants. Kelley buys herself an imitation Robin costume and searches for Batman, seeking to help him. She finds Batman at the city dump, where he fights an army of Mutants. Though Batman defeats the Mutant army with his weaponry, the Mutant leader beats him in combat. Kelley creates a diversion and helps Batman escape. With the help of retiring Commissioner James Gordon and the new Robin, Batman defeats the Mutant leader on his own terms.
Robin (Carrie Kelley) - The Dark Knight Returns - February 1986 - DC Comics
Carrie Kelley was the first girl to take up the mantle of Robin in this fundamental graphic novel. Inspired by Batman, Carrie finds the courage to suit up and clean up Gotham against the mutant gangs that rule by fear. She finds Batman in trouble and saves his life, becoming a true Robin in the process. As a kid, I always thought it was great that a girl could be Robin because it was kind of a crazy idea at the time to me.

Indian-American physicist, companion to Ivar Anni-Padda, and the accidental inventor of time travel.
Neela Sethi -  Ivar, Timewalker - January 2015 - Valiant Comics
I read this series a long time ago and Neela really stuck out to me. She accidentally invents time travel, setting off a chain of events that ends up with her ruling the end of time, and sending agents back in time to stop herself from ever inventing time travel. I loved the story because I am a huge fan of time travel paradoxes. It’s a very funny time-travel adventure.

Midnighter is a fictional, comic book-based superhero, best known as a member of the rogue superhero team, The Authority. Created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch, he first appeared in Stormwatch (vol. 2) No. 4, before appearing in various Authority books and series and his own eponymous ongoing series. He and his husband, Apollo, have also been interpreted as a parallel of the Batman/Superman World's Finest partnership.
Midnighter - August 2015 - DC Comics
I’ve only read the first issue of this one so far, but I love the artwork. The use of panels within panels is done in a way that gives a lot of motion to the action. I had always known Midnighter as Apollo’s husband, but in this new series it seems like they are split up. The first issue hints that something happened between them but I haven’t read any more so far.

Following a tragic end to her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City
Jessica Jones - November 2015 - Netflix & Marvel Comics
Ok so this isn’t technically a comic book series, but Jessica Jones has been around for a while and is finally getting recognition thanks to Netflix and Marvel’s original TV series. These pages are from a promotional issue that Marvel published before the series launched. Note the cameo use of Daredevil on the cover as an attempt to broaden the appeal of the book. To me, it cheapens it a bit, it should have just been text at most.

Kamala Khan, created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, is the fourth character to take the name Ms. Marvel. Khan first appeared in Captain Marvel #17 (November 2013) and is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey, who idolizes Carol Danvers. Khan was given her own Ms. Marvel series, which premiered in February 2014, becoming Marvel Comics' first Muslim character to headline her own comic book.
Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) - February 2014 - Marvel Comics
This is the kind of comic book I wish existed when i was a kid. Kamala’s a super-hero loving teenager with strict parents who only wants the freedom to learn about life first hand. When she sneaks out to a party, and accidentally gets caught in a fog of Terrigen Mist, she blacks out and dreams about Captain Marvel and a destiny larger than herself. When she awakens, she finds that it’s true, and she has superpowers!

Recounting the exploits of a party of four rowdy, foul-mouthed adventurers, the series has received critical praise, was nominated for the 2014 Eisner Award for Best New Series and won the 2015 GLAAD Media Award.
Rat Queens - September 2013 - Image Comics
This is the most recent series I am reading. I am up to issue four and it’s hard to put it down. The adventures are structured like a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but the sense of humor is very modern. I love the fluidity of the action sequences, Tess Fowler does an amazing job making the characters look like they are moving through the pages.

A space expedition goes horribly wrong because if it didn’t there would be no story! Reluctant explorer Keith Kanga and his crew crash land on KAPTARA, a world filled with danger and weird danger and dangerous weirdos! And if he can’t survive, then Earth, the place where YOU live, is doomed!
Kaptara - April 2015 - Image Comics
This book is weird as hell and I love it. Keith gets stranded on Kaptara and the friendly locals want nothing more than to help him save Earth from a ruthless enemy. The problem is he doesnt to! The coolest thing about this book are the character designs.

The original was Prez Rickard, the first teenage president of the United States of America, who appeared in a short-lived comic series by writer Joe Simon and artist Jerry Grandenetti in 1973 and 1974
Prez: First Teen President - August 1973 - DC Comics
The original first teen president, Prez Rickards took advantage of a constitutional amendment that lowered the age of eligibility, instead of the ‘corporate personhood’ loophole that allowed Beth Ross to become Prez. A reflection on the influential youth culture of the 1970s.
