When it comes food and flowers I put on the altar for my ancestors I place it outside. I leave it to continue decomposing in nature or for the animals to have. Water I pour outside or in my plants. Wine I discard outside as well. I always give thanks to the items, thanking them for their energy that was provided to my ancestors. I try to avoid throwing anything from their altar into the trash. The only thing I throw away are the candles after they are done burning. Everything else I put back into nature
in general on an altar, what should be done with offerings to gods and/or ancestors? Is it thrown out? can you eat it? when i researched i could only find stuff about mexican culture and buddhism which are so culturally specific and couldnt find any kind of general advice or in the case of ancestors.
I typically just throw mine out or eat them myself. Those are for my ancestors. For certain dieties, i’ll offer a cup of water by pouring it outside. Try to look up what to do for certain dieties to find a specific way to handle altar items.
Also though  Buddhism is culturally specific, it’s an open practice!
Also if you have an altar, please give your input!

Ancestor Altar 1
Tumblr media
“I was taught to make my Ancestral altar Ifá style but it mutated based on my ancestors requests etc.
For instance, my people were not enslaved in the Caribbean, they were Afam so they like Cognac and Whiskey as much as they like Rum(more traditional) or Palm wine(Continental traditional)
Designate a space, put out 9 glasses of water, and at least one candle, heirlooms, pictures, ashes, and offerings. Alcohol, food, tobacco, things they like. Not everyone has close family ties in this generation so even small things are good. For instance I have my grandfathers sock on the altar and offer Pepsi cuz he loves that shit 😭
I consistently keep fresh flowers and burn incense, and clean it and upkeep offerings once a week
This is not a memorial, it is a conversation space and they actively take offering and give guidance and protection so pay attention to their directives, your immediate feelings, and the activity of things on and around the altar” -Myesha W.

I truly have a strong dislike for ppl like this anon. I have a lot of things I want to say but I'm not gonna argue with ppl that aren't on my level on the internet anymore
As a PoC, you don't speak for all of us. Some of us don't want to live in the past anymore and want to bar others away from our practices. Please keep that in mind because nobody is an authority here on tumblr.
Firstly, I never said I spoke for all of us. I only repeat what’s been told to me by other people of color, or ask them to chime in when I don’t know the answer. Secondly, it’s not “living in the past”, it’s trying to preserve cultures that have been histoicaly mutilated and disrespected due to racism. Anon what you said is very rude and offensive and you need to consider how you phrase certain things going forward. If you don’t want to bar your practices, that’s fine. But for those of us who do, we have very valid reasons for doing so.

Anyone have actual recipes for Hoyts cologne? Having a hard time finding it already made or recipes
Florida Water
Tumblr media
Hey y’all
Florida Water, Hoyt’s Cologne and Kananga water are colognes, literally perfumes, used in Hoodoo, Obeah, Lucumi, Sanse and other Diasporan ATRs
Florida Water is easily the most popular cuz you can buy it at Walmart
To make it, you just need some gin or clear rum and clove, orange and lavender essential oils or whole pieces to soak. Some people add cinnamon and/or camphor. Let it sit for about 9 days and you have Florida Water
Hoyt’s is similar with lemon, bergamot and rose
Kananga relies heavily on ylang ylang etc
These are alternatives to store bought brands. They’re not difficult to make and relatively inexpensive

Thursday is a Rada day, and so it’s a good day for some video of Rada ceremony.
This is a brief visit by Ezili Freda. She comes into the head of the priest that salutes her, and you can see priests attending her (including my husband getting a little love from her), and then she leaves fairly quickly.
There’s some close-ups of the drums, and you can see some of what a typical Jacmel battery of drums looks like. The set-up for drums in Haiti varies depending on region; in Jacmel, where this fet happens and where the lineage I am a child of has its home temple, there are usually four drummers playing three single drums and one set of 3 or 4 drums, plus an ogan (a metal or glass piece hit with a metal or wood implement) player.
You can hear how the drums change when possession becomes imminent. The met tanbou/head drummer alternately engages in and ‘breaks’ the rhythm to create tension, and then ‘breaks’ the rhythm again to begin to beat the spirit into the chwal’s head. When you’re in the temple, you can feel the shift of the energy–the drumming essentially is ripping open a whole for the spirits to come down through. There is no Vodou without the drums.
