We have about 6 or so slots left!
HANDLE WITH CARE VOL. 2-- CALL FOR ARTISTS
Handle With Care zine is now seeking artists for the next volume! We are looking for about 20 artists for this edition.
Important information, boundaries, and legal stuff:
Submission deadline for Vol 2. is July 19th, 2024. If you are accepted but unable to make the deadline for whatever reason, please communicate with us! We are more than willing to be accommodating and figure something out.
The zine's physical dimension will be 8 inches tall, 6 inches wide (20.32 cm by 15.24 cm). Submissions should be in 300 DPI.
The loose theming of Vol 2. is that of an instruction manual. This theme is NOT strict and does not affect piece submission, but it will guide how we structure the zine as well as guide the aesthetics of the front cover and non-submission pages such as the table of contents and credits section. While it is not required, feel free to use the instruction manual theme as a guiding prompt: what would you have liked to have when you were questioning objectum?
Visual artists are welcome to submit an additional one-page written accompaniment to their visual artwork if they would like. Fully written works are currently capped to a maximum of five pages, though this may be adjusted once we have a rough idea what people are submitting.
Handle With Care is meant to celebrate raw objectum emotion and experiences, and meant to give these emotions a physical place in the world. We do not have a minimum skill level as a result.
However, we reserve the right to reject or ask for revisions on any submissions that make us uncomfortable, including any romantic depiction of an object that resembles a realistic feral animal or a human child. This zine is printed through a government-owned printing press. If your submission can be misconstrued as something far more concerning than just objectum sexuality by people who are not familiar with the community, it will be rejected for the peace of mind of everyone involved.
HWC is also strictly safe for work. Non-sexual nudity is allowed, although if it crosses a line we may ask for revisions.
AI-generated submissions are also currently not allowed. We want to see work straight from objectum artists, not an objectum middleman commissioning ChatGPT for free and taking the credit.
HWC is non-profit. Physical copies are sold only to break even on printing and shipping. Any profit from donations will be re-invested in the zine or split evenly between all contributors.
Artists will retain all rights to their individual work, including copyright and being able to resell it. The zine owner (me (Ross), in this case) is allowed to sell the pieces only in the bundle of the entire zine and not individually, and will not own any copyright to those pieces.
Zine organization and communication is done through a Discord server. If you are interested in submitting something for Handle With Care Vol. 2, please DM this tumblr or email [email protected] with:
What are you thinking of submitting? If it's a written work, how many pages do you estimate you'll need?
2. Social media or some other way to verify you are not a troll
We already have a cover artist. We currently have an artist maximum of 20-25. If there is no more room by the time you send in an application, we will put you on a priority list for Vol. 3.
We're very excited to work on a second volume of the zine!

The last poll resulted in "instruction manual" winning as a theme. We have received both support and concerns regarding having a theme, so this is the second round of polls: how strictly should HWC Vol 2 hold to the voted theme?
In truth, I probably should have run this poll first, but I didn't think far enough ahead. I personally lean toward "loose", but will listen to what the community wants.

Note
I think the theme is a really good thing. while it means individual zines are a bit restricted, there's going to be multiple yeah? i think it gives it variery in its own way, allowing each issue to have a different vibe, and art can really flourish with restrictions, its foundationalto my own artistic process. not only that, but the themes are way more to do with the form and tone than content, allowing artists to still write/draw what objects they please. additionally i like all 3 of the themes in the poll, especially the instructions manual one!
Thank you for the input!!

Note
I'm with the previous anon, I feel like a lot of the theme ideas prevent people with a certain type of art or a certain object of attraction from joining if they don't fit the theme for that year and it doesn't really feel fair if someone was looking forward to joining but can't because of the theme.
Thank you! We will also keep this in mind.
We may run another poll asking how strictly the zine should hold to a theme if one is chosen--we could run a loose theming but still allow submissions that don't hold to it.

I really don't like the idea of a themed zine. I likely wouldn't be as interested in purchasing a copy if it didn't have variety.
Thank you for the suggestion! We will keep this in mind.

Very preliminary poll for the next volume of HWC Vol 2. Would you like to see a theme for the next Handle With Care volume, and if so, which would you like to see most? There may be one or two additional rounds of polls if there are a lot of suggestions.

No zine update yet, but I wanted to let y'all know of a new piece of objectum media:
Chicago objectum folks: Theatre Wit on Belmont Ave. is performing Inanimate, a play about an objectum woman in love with a Dairy Queen sign. While the play is written by someone outside of the community, I have contacted the theatre and playwright--they are friendly to objectum people!
The script is available for purchase online at broadwayplaypublishing.com/the-plays/inanimate
Content warnings: lots of objectum-phobia and ableism thrown toward the main character. there's a very emotionally heavy romantic encounter scene. object death.
It does have a good ending.
The portayal of objectum sexuality is a bit on-the-nose and heavy-handed, but portrayed with compassion.
The theatre is currently in preview performances, so please send them feedback if you do attend/read the script.

The Kofi is finally up!!! I am SO sorry for everyone who's been waiting with a reserved copy; I had some rather strange problems trying to connect a payment method that required me to contact support. I will be emailling folks tonight and tomorrow.
International folks that have a reserved copy--I will be contacting you tomorrow about it.
Thank you everyone for your patience!!

Hey y'all--
About 20 or so physical copies are still available!
That being said, I am a bit burned out on shipping physical copies right now so responses might be slow. I believe I have shipped out copies to everyone who has paid, and aside from customers in Canada, all of them should've shipped by now--if you didn't receive your copy yet and paid, please email me and let me know!
I should hopefully be feeling better on Friday. If you reserved a copy and don't hear from me by then, please send me a reminder! The Kofi will almost certainly be up by then (delay is due to Stripe refusing to connect w/ Kofi) and international shipping prices should be figured out soon.
Thank you for all of your patience and support. I hope everyone is enjoying their copy of the zine, whether physical or digital :)

Thinking about the future...
First of all, thank you so much to everyone that bought a physical copy of Handle With Care Vol. 1! The first shipments should start arriving during the end of the week, and I will be shipping a few more tomorrow. International folks: I will have stripe working soon and should be able to ship internationally.
It is still too early for the second volume, but I have been thinking about putting out a call for applications in a few months, likely in May. The details are still uncertain, and honestly I am a little nervous about what would probably be a far bigger project than HWC Vol. 1. My plan so far is to run the call for submissions through May/June or June/July and have it completed by August.
If you have any thoughts on this time frame, please let me know either through comments or asks!
In the meantime, if you want to contribute to an objectum zine right now, @objectumzine is currently in the interest check phase and will open artist applications soon.
(Also, just to clarify, HWC and Sense of Longing are not affiliated with each other)
