You know what they say: behind every successful man, there’s a badass broad.

To add to this - if you have a bad apple, even just ONE, you have a bad tree. You don’t keep clipping off the bad apples hoping the tree won’t keep sprouting new rotten ones.
So what do you do? You cut the tree down completely, dig out the roots, find a new spot, & plant a brand new tree.
Here’s the thing about “a few bad apples.” It comes from “One bad apple spoils the bunch.” And it’s true, if you have a barrel of apples and one is rotten, it will release ethylene gas. This will force the other apples to over-ripen and begin to rot as well. One bad apple isn’t an unfortunate addition. It’s a taint, the beginning of total decay, the ruination of an entire batch.
So if you have a bad apple, you spot it as soon as you can. You isolate it from the other, fresh apples. You throw it away with the trash. You DO NOT halfheartedly put the bad apple to the side, park it behind or desk or send it home with pay for a few weeks. You REMOVE it, permanently. You don’t take it out of the barrel and look the other way when it ends up in another district’s barrel, creating repeat offenses.
You do not create a false brotherhood, a pack of apples, a code of “apples always stick up for apples, no matter what.” Because then that bad apple is still there. It has spread its decay and infested the whole crop, because no one wants to address the spreading and systemic badness of the apple.
You take that motherfucking bad apple and you throw it in the compost heap and let it shrivel into dirt into nothing before it can poison anything else.
Otherwise, you don’t have one bad apple. You have a whole spoiled bunch. And then you gave that nasty, smelly, mealy, rotten orchard a bunch of riot gear and tell them they are better than the rest of the fruit on the farm and that it is their GOD GIVEN RIGHT to smash every pear, papaya, watermelon, strawberry, or pineapple that dissents.

The time for silence is over, white people. You are either with the black community or you are not.⁣ No longer can you claim to be an ally while spending your days hiding in the shadows of your privilege (or behind the safety of a screen).
To be an true ally, you must be anti-racist. To be anti-racist, you MUST:
Join the choir of voices demanding justice (no matter how small you think of your audience, no matter who you might upset).
Open your wallets & support the people on the ground fighting for justice/liberation (Minneapolis Freedom Fund is a great place to start as it helps pay bail/bond for the protestors).⁣
Put your life on the line when you witness racism, police brutality - get your white body in the way. The state is more likely to protect white bodies (proof of this is how the police responded to white protestors last week & black protestors this week).
Shut up, sit down, & listen to the black community: their struggles, their pain, their cries for justice. Your voice in this fight is needed, but it can never outshine or undermine the voices of the black community. Be the fence between them and their oppressors, not a megaphone drowning out their cries.⁣
Follow more black creators, activists, politicians, etc. You can’t learn/grow and do the work if you aren’t actively in the community, surrounding yourself with people who look different than you. ⁣
Learn from the black community, but do not burden them. If you have a question, google it. Still have questions, ask a white person first. The black community does not have the time nor the energy to cater to you. ⁣
Be willing to be uncomfortable, be willing to be ashamed because doing the work as an anti-racist is not easy work, but it is work that must never stop. Our white discomfort that we will feel is nothing compared to the actual pain and terror felt by the black community. If you feel guilty, upset, embarrassed, hurt, frustrated, sad, devastated by what’s going on - you are feeling only 1% of what the black community feels daily. You will survive your discomfort, they may not.
These are just some ways you can show up for the black community, today and every day moving forward. This fight doesn’t stop when the news cycle moves on & it shouldn’t leave your lips (or your thoughts) either.⁣
So, I ask all of my white followers - will you make the effort to do the work with me? Will you betray your own race to uplift and amplify the black community with me? Will you actively do everything you can to destroy and dismantle white supremacy (& seek justice) with me?⁣
If not, please unfollow me right now (& don’t message me and tell me why, I already know).
The time for white silence and complacency is over.
(& I don’t want you here if you aren’t willing to step up and start doing the work, period)

During Boromir’s death scene in the Fellowship of the Ring film, you a hear a choir in the soundtrack. The choir isn’t singing random vowel sounds; they’re actually singing in Elvish.

The English translation of the lyrics? It’s a line from the books: “I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only what they defend.”
For bonus hurt points– in the book, those lines were said by his little brother Faramir.
