Escape From Uganda

Idi Amin is one of the 20th century’s most notorious dictators. In a recent PBS television series, he features alongside Kim Il Sung, Mussolini and other “Profiles in Tyranny.” In Uganda, the memory of the Amin years has been suppressed by a government keen to promote political amnesia. There are no memorials to the dead; neither are there monuments or other institutions that encourage deliberation over the Amin years. In 1972, tens of thousands of South Asians were obliged, by presidential decree, to leave Uganda. The Amin government labelled them as usurpers of black Ugandans’ economic power, a foreign minority whose usurious self-interest ran against the majority. Before the expulsion, Asians owned many large businesses in Uganda but the purge of Asians from Uganda's economy was virtually total.

TASK AT HAND

It is the year 1979 and you and your teammates have been appointed as the governing party of Uganda. You need to try reviving the economy and convince the South Asians to come back. You will be representing many different ministries and you need to give strategies to enable expatriates to return to the country. 

Each of your team members should be allocated and representing  the roles of President, Vice President, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Defense respectively

Tyrannical Tylenol

Tylenol is a brand of drugs advertised for reducing pain, reducing fever, and relieving the symptoms of allergies, cold, cough, headache, and influenza. The brand name is owned by McNeil consumer healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. The year is 1982; seven people in Chicago died after taking Tylenol due to an unknown suspect lacing the capsules with cyanide after the products reached the shelves. The Chicago Tylenol Murders were a series of poisoning deaths resulting from drug tampering in the Chicago metropolitan area in 1982. The victims had all taken Tylenol-branded acetaminophen capsules that had been laced with potassium cyanide. In the immediate aftermath, Tylenol's commanding 37% market share dropped to just 7% nationwide, despite the problem being contained to the Chicago area. There are a lot of disparities about how the victims are not being compensated well and that the incident has taken place due to the sheer carelessness of the company. The Tylenol tampering incident still causes fear in some people which is stopping people from taking Tylenol as their first choice of medication. 

Task at Hand:

Johnson and Johnson have appointed your team to come up with strategies to remove the fear in the minds of the people about the Tylenol products. You are to present your strategies to the board members of Johnson and Johnson.

The New Future

Smart cities are emerging across the globe at a rampant pace, owing to the infusion of technology and the ease of life that they bring with themselves. Capitalizing on the same idea on a great scale is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its plans for a futuristic city with Project NEOM. Project NEOM, which is being badged as part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategic plan, will be run by artificial intelligence, enhanced by machine learning and 5G systems, that predicts ways to make life easier. 

Muhammad Bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, has just announced plans to build a car-less, zero-carbon city with 1 million inhabitants and no roads, laid out as a 170km-long belt with services and transport infrastructure built underground. This belt of 170 kms called - “The Line” is a part of Project NEOM, that aims to be the backbone of the entire project and the selling point for local and global investors to pool in resources for the project. The absence of roads, and vehicles, will not inconvenience the city’s inhabitants since all essential daily services, such as schools, medical clinics, leisure facilities and well as green spaces will be located within a five-minute walk. Energy will come entirely from renewable sources and its physical infrastructure will be built around nature, instead of over it, which means in practice that 95% of what was there before the city is built will still be there after work is completed. 

The project will initially be funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The aim is for later stages to be built as international projects, led, populated and funded by people from all over the world with the aim of creating 380,000 jobs and adding $48bn a year the kingdom’s GDP by 2030. 

As exciting and technological as this plan is, the entire project also has its own downfalls with respect to the current inhabitants of the NEOM zone and their situation of losing their homes. In addition to this, the project aims to harvest data collecting over 90% of available data from residents and smart infrastructure such as deploying drones, artificial intelligence, surveillance and resident tracking systems. Speculations arise over how the government would be in control of the personal data of the million residents, investors, vendors and companies who would be a part of the city. The current idea in everyone's minds is that this deep level of technological integration could deter many from moving there - and leave the door open to a nefarious exploitation of personal data.
