A/N: Part Two to One More Dance. I highly recommend reading that one first.
Changbin was depressed, to say the least. Nowadays, the crown prince could be found moping in either his room or his personal study. And it was beginning to worry his mother. That's why she sent her daughter to go talk to him and figure out why he was in such a depressive state.
"You have to come out sometime." His sister called out to him as she continued to patiently knock on his bedroom door.
"No, I really don't." His voice was thick and muffled thanks to the heavy door between them.
She scoffed and crossed her arms in front of her. "Open the door. I'm coming in."
There were sounds of movement before finally his bedroom door creaked open. His sister barged her way inside and stopped across the room from him, as he sat back down at his desk and placed his head on the table. She began tapping her foot, hoping the obnoxious noise would force him to talk, but he simply gave a dejected sigh.
"Are you going to talk or am I going to have to beat it out of you like when we were children?" She snapped.
She didn't miss Changbin's flinch, but he did sigh again. "They didn't see me at midnight."
"What are you talking about?"
He glanced over at his sister. "That person I was dancing with almost the whole night at last week's ball? I asked them to meet me in the garden at midnight. They didn't show. At first, I had no idea why and spent all my time trying to puzzle it all out. I then came to the conclusion that they simply didn't like me as much as I like them. And the rejection stings."
She gave her brother a bewildered look. "What in the name of- how could you have possibly come to that conclusion? It's like you said, you danced with them practically all night! They had to have cared about you if they would spend that much time with you! As for them not showing, there must be a reason, rather a more logical reason than that!"
"And what would that be?" He asked with an indignant sniff.
"I don't know! But something better than that!"
Changbin simply sighed once more and turned away from his sister. "Regardless, I am not coming out of my room until I get over this rejection."
"And knowing you, that will take forever." His sister sighed, missing the annoyed look he sent her. "Look, she's Lord Minho's sibling, correct? Why don't we send a letter inviting them to tea and get this whole mess straightened out."
He shook his head. "No. I can't do that. They probably never want to see me again. I am not about to sit through tea with them, Minho, and mother, trying to puzzle out what went wrong. I don't want to deal with the heartbreak that will come with it."
She groaned. "Well we have to do something! Mother is worried about your well-being and, frankly, I am too. You need to get out of your room already! You and I both know that this is not how the future King should be behaving!"
"But I-" Before Changbin could finish his sentence, a sharp knock on his bedroom door rang out.
"Your Highnesses, the Queen wishes to see you both immediately! She says it's urgent!"
His sister shot him a worried look. "We should go. Mother would never say something was urgent unless she absolutely meant it."
Changbin nodded, his depressed look turning serious. After making sure he looked somewhat presentable, he followed his sister out of his room and to his mother's solar. She was standing right outside the door when she saw them, heaving a sigh of relief.
"Excellent, you're right on time." She then frowned at the state of her son. "Really, you couldn't have at least tried to make yourself look nice?"
"What are you talking about? What's going on?" He asked, a worried edge in his voice.
His mother didn't answer his questions. Instead, she fussed with his hair and with his clothes. "Well, I suppose it can't be helped. At least you don't look like a total lost cause. Now, you're going to go in there, sit, be polite, and not come out until this issue is resolved."
"What issue?"
But he never got an answer. Instead, he was pushed into his mother's solar and the door was locked behind him. His mother wished him good luck before he could hear her and his sister's footsteps retreat down the hall. When he turned to face whoever was in the room, his heart dropped.
"Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes?" You flashed him a cheeky grin before gesturing to the seat in front of you. "Please, take a seat. We have much to discuss."
At first, Changbin stood there, a little lost as he tried to make sense of the situation. Then he crossed his arms like a petulant child and looked away. "I have nothing to talk to you about."
You tilted your head a little to the side. "Oh? Is that so? From the letter your mother sent me it sounded like you were absolutely beside yourself with worry and sadness. Which is most definitely not a good look for the future King."
"She said that?!" He couldn't stop the shock and shame from seeping into his voice before he buried his face in his hands. "I assure you, I am not beside myself with worry and sadness. My mother likes to make a big deal about nothing."
"I'm sure. She's like all mothers, worrying about her son and his well-being." You sigh. "Still, I owe you an explanation."
You can see his hesitation before he sits up straight and looks you in the eye, trying to appear like the regal prince he's supposed to be. He clears his throat before he speaks. "Go on. I'm listening."
Your lips tug upward in a small smile. "I'm sure you noticed I didn't meet you in the garden last week."
He pretended to think for a moment. "Now that you mention it, I suppose you are correct. Last week was such a whirlwind, I can't remember much of what happened."
You chuckle and shake your head. "Your bad lying aside, I had a good reason. Princess Eunsong is most definitely the jealous type. She and her lackeys ambushed me before I could go see you. They threatened to expose me if I went to see you and, because I care about you and your reputation, I left on my own accord."
Changbin blushed. "E-expose you?"
"Expose my secret." You shake your head as your smile grows. "And since it is just the two of us, I shall tell you my secret."
His eyes widened and he quickly shook his head. "Oh, no! Please don't feel like you need to divulge your personal information because you feel the need! I don't mind-"
"No, you deserve to know." You assure him. You then fix him with the most pleasant smile you can muster. "I am a convict. A fugitive to be more precise."
"I- pardon?"
"Don't worry, my adopted family knows." You begin to explain. "I was born on the streets and to survive, I would steal and sell on the black market. I was pretty good at it as well. Although we all make mistakes and mine landed me in jail for petty theft. It wasn't a heinous crime and I would've been out in a couple of years. However, because the Queen makes it a habit to pardon criminals once a year with her court, I was chosen to have my sentence reduced. It was then that my adopted mother met me and decided I was too young to be scrounging around the gutter for my next meal. She put me through schooling and training and I became the person I am today. And that's how I ended up being Lord Minho's adopted sibling. Now, how Princess Eunsong found this out is beyond me. She's not very intelligent. But as I said before, I care about you and the reputation of the royal family. I was not about to have you learn about my past at a royal ball in front of hundreds of strangers."
He was taken aback by your story. He couldn't imagine what you must have gone through and how much adversity you must have faced to get where you are today. He couldn't help but admire you even more than he already did.
"That's an impressive tale." He mumbled, unsure of what to say.
"I hope that by telling you all of this, you can stop wallowing in your self pity and you can return to the shining, lovely young man I met at the ball a week ago." You toss him a wink which makes him blush.
"I'm sure I will." He mutters.
"Good. Now, shall we finish tea with where we left off last week?" You ask as you pour him a cup of tea.
"May I ask one more question?"
"By all means, please do."
"You sound proud of the adversity you faced and how you fought to get to where you are today. Why not just have Princess Eunsong tell everyone? I would have understood." He asks, cocking his head to the side.
You smile and shake your head. "Besides wanting to protect your family, it also wasn't her news to tell. The truth will come out eventually, especially if we allow this courtship to continue, but I want to be the one to tell my story. Does that make sense?"
He nods and takes the cup of tea you hand to him. He then pauses, the cup half raised to his lips. "Wait, this courtship?"
You chuckle, obscuring your smile with your own teacup. "Of course. I wouldn't have asked to dance with you last week if I wasn't interested in you. And with how we danced all night, I'm confident you're interested in me as well."
With a bright blush and an even brighter smile, he replied, "Well, I would be lying if I said I wasn't. And I do so hate lying."

A/N: I felt like I went overboard but this turned out to be a lot shorter than I anticipated.
The ballroom was a spectacular display of elegance and decadence. The chandeliers were glittering with diamonds and candle light, and the floor was polished to a mirror-like finish. It was absolutely extravagant, and it made Changbin sick.
It was his mother’s idea, this whole ball thing. Ever since his older sister was married two years ago, his mother had been trying to get him to do the same thing. He wasn’t interested in the slightest, but according to the laws, he had to marry if he ever wanted to be king. It was stupid and he wanted to change it, but he couldn’t until he was king. So he had to play this stupid game just to appease his mother and get what he wanted in the end.
“Dear, what are you doing?” Speaking of the devil, his overly anxious mother scurried over to him and started fussing with his suit. “You’re supposed to wait until all of the guests arrive before you make your grand entrance! Now come along.”
“It’s not like it’s a rule.” He muttered, following her anyways.
“Maybe not, but it’s tradition!”
“What if I don’t want to follow tradition?”
She scoffed. “You always say that. And I’ve been trying to respect that, but some traditions must be followed! You’ll understand when you’re older.”
He rolled his eyes at her sharp words. “Well I’m old enough to get married apparently. How much older do I need to be?”
“Hold your tongue!”
“Yes, Bin, be respectful to your elders.” His sister teased.
Their mother scowled. “Why was I blessed with such impossible children! Regardless, the guests will be arriving shortly. Please try and be on your best behavior! Even if you don’t find a possible spouse in the crowd, please be cordial Changbin. That is all I ask of you tonight.”
At least she wasn’t asking the impossible. So with a sigh, he nodded. “Alright mother. I’ll endeavor to oblige your request.”
His sister snorted behind him and he shoved her playfully. Their mother wailed, “Would you two knock it off already! Get in your places and be presentable! I want tonight to go well, please and thank you.”
Shaking his head, Changbin stood behind his older sister, who turned to look at him. “She’s right, you know.”
“What?”
“Mom’s right.” She sighed before continuing, “I know you don’t like all the rules and traditions, but sometimes we have to do things we don’t like to get what we want. Besides, it wouldn’t kill you to try and make nice with some of these royals. Allies are valuable.”
She had a point. The kingdom was growing rapidly and other nations were starting to take notice. It’d be easier to have them as friends than as enemies. So he supposed he would play nice. Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and looked forward to the doors that would open to the ballroom.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the king, queen, princess, and crown prince of Jascijan.”
The doors were thrown open and the sound of applause reached his ears. He gave a pleasant smile and nodded to the people as he passed. He followed his parents to their thrones before standing next to his sister, who curtseyed as he bowed to their parents. They both turned towards the crowd and his sister’s husband took her hand to lead her to the dance floor. Now it was his turn to pick his first dance partner.
All of the eligible partners were lined up before him. It was a big honor to be chosen first and it was a decision he wasn’t going to take lightly. So he very carefully assessed each person before standing before one of the princesses.
“May I have this dance, Your Highness?”
She giggled obnoxiously. “Of course, Your Highness.”
Princess Eunsong from the Kingdom of Heshain wasn’t really his first choice if he were to marry a princess. However, she came from one of the most affluent kingdoms and was the best choice in terms of allyship. So to put on a show of goodwill and friendliness, he asked her to dance first.
And he regretted it as soon as the music began.
She couldn’t dance to save her life! She couldn’t count the music and kept stepping on his feet. Not only that, but she had the most obnoxious voice and her laugh was like nails on a chalkboard. He tried to grin and bear it but he was just counting down the seconds until the song ended. However during his final bow, she grabbed him again for the next dance! She had him trapped for an additional dance after that before he finally got free.
As Changbin slipped off the dance floor, he caught sight of his sister who was giggling at him. He shot her a venomous look before grabbing a glass of champagne and chugged it down all in one go. Already he wanted to get out of here, perhaps to the training ground to spar with some of the guards in training.
“My, my. Is our future king an alcoholic?” A teasing voice to his left caused him to turn his head at the two people approaching him. “That doesn’t bode well for the future of the kingdom.”
“Lord Minho, you’re one to talk.” He chuckled before shaking his friend’s hand. “It’s good to see you again. You’ve been away for so long. How have your travels been?”
He shrugged. “As exciting as ever, I’m glad to finally be home. I see you’ve been kept busy. Looking for someone to rule alongside you?”
Changbin gave a nervous chuckle. “Not exactly.”
“Well that’s too bad.” The person beside Minho cleared their throat and his smile became more mischievous. “Oh, forgive me. Prince Changbin, I would like to introduce you to my sibling, Y/n.”
Bowing, he took your hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Y/n.”
“They were hoping to dance with you this evening, but considering you just spent three dances with the insufferable Princess Eunsong, I understand you must be well and truly danced out.” Minho jokes.
“I-” He stopped himself. The look in your eyes made him want to reconsider ducking out early. “Perhaps one dance couldn’t hurt.”
You laughed. “As far as I know, a dance has never hurt anyone before. Allow me to show you.”
And with that, you brought him onto the dance floor. As the orchestra began a romantic waltz, he led you through the dance. He was surprised to see how good of a dancer you were, and it felt like the two of you were waltzing on air. And though he would never admit it, this dance felt different from all the other times he has danced this exact waltz before.
“So, you’re related to Lord Minho?” He asked, trying not to think too much about the lack of distance between you two and the fact that things were slightly blurry around you.
“Adopted siblings.” You said matter-of-factly. “And he likes to lord that fact over me quite frequently. Nevertheless, he’s a good brother. I’m sure you’re a good brother to your sister?”
He laughed. “She might not agree, but we’re close. When I really need it, she gives me strength to be a better prince and future king.”
“That’s sweet of her.” You mused. “And no matter what my brother says, I think you’ll make a great king someday. Though your choice in friends is questionable.”
“How so?”
“Well your friends with my brother for starters.” The two of you laughed at that. “But I think you can rise above it.”
He nodded. “Well I thank you for your concern. You should meet my adviser, Chan. He’s also very concerned with how I’ll rule one day.”
“What makes you think I’m concerned?” You had that same mischievous twinkle in your eye that Minho got when he was about to play a prank on him.
However, he began to panic slightly. “Ah, no, I didn’t mean, what I meant to say was-”
You shook your head with a giggle. “Don’t worry. I was only teasing. But, if you’ll forgive me, enough talk about kings and allies. Tell me about some of the things you like.”
The two of you fell into easy conversation about practically anything and everything, except about his impending ascent to the throne. While he was mildly surprised you didn’t start talking about what you liked first, he was grateful for the change. Princess Eunsong kept trying to tell him about how great she was and how great her kingdom would be for him and his people. But you were different. You listened to him carefully and asked questions to get to know him further. It seemed you really took an interest in him.
And he felt the same way about you. Everything you told him about yourself was fascinating. You were charming and good-natured. If he had only one word to describe you, he’d say perfect. You were everything he thought he’d want in a future spouse. And that thought scared him the most.
It felt like it had been hours and yet just seconds when his sister tapped on your shoulder. “Forgive me, but I must speak to my brother for a brief moment. Then you both may dance again.”
After you bowed, Changbin watched you walk away before his sister snapped in his face. “What?”
She chuckled. “You’re in love, so I won’t be long-”
“I am not in love!”
“Ah, of course…” She shook her head before saying, “You do realize the two of you have been dancing for almost five straight dances? Mother is getting excited that you’ll propose by the end of the night.”
Changbin felt his stomach turn. Shaking his head, he said, “No, it’s much too early for that.”
“So I’ve been trying to tell her. However, father would like you to try and make friends with more than just Lord Minho’s family.”
He nodded seriously. “I will. I promise. Just…”
She smiled and patted his arm. “I know. One more dance, alright?”
“One more.”
And with that, Changbin started to search for you. Just one more dance and then he would be satisfied. He found you practically stomping away from Princess Eunsong, who was giving you a venomous look. He was ready to jump to your defense when you grabbed his hand roughly. His breath caught in his throat as you pulled him away.
Pulling him tightly into a dance, you sighed. “I do apologize. I just needed to get away.”
Before he could stop himself, he touched your cheek to get you to look into his eyes. “What did she say? How can I help?”
You smiled and placed your hand on top of his. “It’s nothing. She’s just jealous I captured your attention so. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.”
“That’s good to hear.” He sighed and when he dropped his hand, it was already itching to touch you as intimately like that again. “Unfortunately I’m only allowed one more dance with you before I have to go mingle with other nobles.”
Nodding, you jerked him tightly to the left. “Ah, of course.”
“Are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
Before he could speak, you turned him tighter. “You’re being odd.”
“Am I? I hadn’t noticed.”
Again, you pulled him away from some unforeseen target. He was ready to plant his feet and ask you what was going on. However he noticed you glaring at someone behind him. “What is it?”
“Nothing, nothing, it’s just… Eunsong has been trying to cut in on our last dance together and I’m not giving you up so easily.”
“Oh.” Changbin could feel his cheeks burn. “Well, I’m glad you’re so protective of me.”
You paused, staring at him with wide eyes. “Oh, why, thank you.”
The dance ended far too soon for his liking and he bowed deeply before snatching your hand once more. “As soon as you hear the last chime of midnight, meet me in the garden. I want to speak with you again before the night is over.”
Smiling, you nodded and brought his hand up to kiss his knuckles. “I’ll be waiting.”
Again, Changbin watched you disappear into the crowd. He could still feel your lips as they brushed against the back of his hand. It felt like electricity was coursing through him. Suddenly, he knew that no matter what happened for the rest of the night, he couldn’t wait to see you one more time.
