To Define Something
Performance for camera / Remnants of Performance
Permanent ink markers on adhesive tape
40:39 mins.
71 x 86 cm.(frame)
2017
I give a lecture in front of a camera and possibly an audience. I define things by what they are not and note down key words and connections between them on a surface turned blackboard behind me. The lecture ends when I loop back to the first definition I have given. The lecture makes no sense.

I take it as a postulate that humankind evolves above all through mistake, incomprehension and misunderstanding. In my practice I try to analyse, portray and influence reality, in light of such assumption.
I establish connections based on the very shortcomings of our means of communication. I investigate how discomfort can create awareness of the present. I try to bring attention to the fracture separating a rational and an experiential reading of a given situation.
Through a performative research, I combine the collection, production and alteration of objects, texts and spaces.  I set up talks that never begin, frantic group meditations, silent interviews where no questions are asked or answers given, I draw cognitive maps and write texts that are meant to be forever corrected or never understood, I assemble ephemeral installations, conduct late night radio shows, and trigger all sorts of disquieting interactions with audiences and passers-by.

One Hour Without Understanding Performance / installation 2 free standing white boards, permanent ink 2016
The performance took place in a wet market in Shanghai. For an hour I tried to list all things that I can’t understand. Two people tried to understand my rumbling and take notes, in both Chinese and English. The audience also struggled to understand my rumbling and later to read the notes. Out of all this exponential growth of non-understanding, came two beautiful objects, the whiteboards with their abstract scribblings.

Audio
Nothing Soothing for Half an Hour
HEADPHONES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Recorded sound + AM/FM Radio, A4 paper, plant 30:00 mins. (extract 09:35 mins.) Sound engineering: Riccardo Amorese Installation: Lou-Atessa Marcellin 2016
I recorded myself while reading quotes from books and song lyrics that contained the word “Nothing”. I recorded three layers of voice and added sound effects, in order to achieve the effect of a late night, psychedelic, “soothing” radio show.
Headphones or a good sound system are highly recommended. And so are a joint and a glass of wine

Girolamo Marri Plays His Favourite Record
@ Super Woofer, Matt’s Gallery, 2015
I said I’d play my favourite record for the audience. I talked about subjective and objective, did some very bad tai chi, and never played any record.

Good Reasons Not to Understand One Another
Mixed media installation Dimensions variable 2016
In Good Reasons Not to Understand One Another, the relation of power between speakers and listeners is represented by couples of reading stands and chairs,  each duo accompanied by other elements such as violently loud or barely audible voice recordings, glass sheets laying on the ground, electro-luminescent texts precariously pinned to the wall and floor, and colourful and tasteless infographics. All the works are surrounded by black packing tape, used as if a pencil, to temporarily frame and connect all elements into a single, unstable entity.

Talk Deejaying
Performative talk About an hour 2016
I was asked by a collector to present my work to an audience at her place. I took the opportunity to test some talk deejaying. I presented my work in random order as I stumbled upon it on my hard drive, improvising a thread and talking about accessory subjects, such as my resemblance with actor Ted Danson. Good fun. For me at least

The Singers
Performance Duration Variable 2014
The performers, the number of which may vary from a minimum of 4, are professional sign language interpreters. They walk leisurely around a given space, without making their presence remarkable in any way. They occasionally approach groups of people conversing and, without any introduction or explanation, they translate whatever is being said. If asked anything, they simply translate questions back. Just as seamlessly as they arrive, they leave their temporary audience after a few mnutes.
The signers intrude private conversations, but without adding or subtracting any content from them. In doing so they act as a mirror, on the one hand pushing people to forcibly confront themselves with what they are saying, and on the other making them aware of a different language/form of coomunication, that coexists wrldwide with the common local language, and yet runs parallel to it, detached and unnoticed except in very specific contexts.

Ordinanze sindacali in caso di decesso di porto Municipal ordinances in case of decease of a port
Documentation pictures of installation 5 Inkjet prints on ultra-smooth archival paper 5 editions of 30 x 20cm and 5 editions of 60 x 40 cm 2011
This installation was produced for an exhibition held in Bari, in southern Italy, in September 2011, featuring work specifically intended for the rundown old port area.
I commissioned to companies working for the city administration, a series of 5 street signs reminiscent of official ones, but displaying ambiguous injunctions, that identified both the old port and the city administration as living entities.
I then installed the signs in spots of the port where they would attract public attention, such as the landing spot of boats during religious cerimonies, or between fishing boats
